  1. Thank you! He just replied to my email actually.
  2. I might go to WashU and really liked the Delmar Loop area, but I'm aware it's so-so safety wise. What would you suggest for someone who values walkability? I would ideally search for a place near campus. Sad to hear about public transport sucking, as I won't get a car nor plan to get one soon, really.
  3. Thank you! I am starting to think it'll be between WashU and them (if they take me.) I'll wait for the Indiana visit, too. The stipend at UNC was low and Rutgers and Pittsburgh haven't said anything about funding yet.
  4. Yep, I haven't heard anything at all other than I was accepted. A professor told me it would take a couple weeks at least. It's odd because he mentioned i should notify them of my decision as soon as possible because of people in the wait-list, but also I have no info about the stipend package and haven't talked much with people in the program, so I don't feel like I can make the decision soon
  5. I would ask a current student. They haven't got back to me about funding, I sent an email to ask.
  6. Ohh let me ask then. I think I'll ask a current student first just in case.
  7. Yes, a 5th year student told me they had been "looking" to hire a Francophonist the last 2 years but hadn't done so for some reason. The chair mentioned they wanted to hire someone next year but given what the student told me, I don't know if they'll actually do. Strange for sure when so many people are always looking for jobs Then again I guess Francophone Studies is only getting more popular now, who knows...
  8. Hi everybody! Has anyone heard of schools offering to help you settle in (with money)? I've heard of people negotiating with universities as in "hi School A is offering me this--could you offer it as well?" and while that sounds great I feel afraid to try lol
  9. Hi everybody, I have heard recently that it is possible that some universities help you financially so you can settle in your new city. Has anybody here done that? How do you go about asking? I'm shy in general and just feel awkward about asking for something else after they've already committed to pay for my studies should I accept! What are your thoughts on this?
  10. @Monsieur VĂ©nus Enjoy your visit to Michigan!! At Stanford I met an applicant who is also going to visit there! His name starts with J and he is Swiss and he's doing some fascinating work on Middle Ages lit.
  11. Hi everybody! Back from Stanford and it was fantastic. It was only 4 of us and they tell me they only accept 2 or 3 people, so I'm not overly optimistic (the other candidates seemed very high caliber, applying to Ivies mostly). (Impostor syndrome kicking in already!) I met lots of cool people though. Sadly they don't have a Francophonist among the faculty And Palo Alto seemed like a very small town, I thought it would be closer to SF. Oh well, beautiful campus in any case!
  12. Update on UChicago's Master in the Humanities...they accepted me with 8k tuition aid. Tuition is 55k. How they think anyone would accept is beyond me.
  13. I had no idea some schools help to settle in. That's fantastic. @Monsieur VĂ©nus that's my outlook on grad school too! I've seen my father raise a family of 6 with 30k a year so when I see a stipend of 20k or above I'm already happy. And I'm doing academia as you said more out of affinity for it than for money, though from my conversation with graduates the situation is indeed bleak. Oh well, that's something to worry about later for sure. @Frenchlady I'm also having an interview soon so I'm perhaps not much help but I've heard just looking up professors' research areas could help. I'm sure they just want to know your interests to see if you're a fit for their program. Good luck!
  14. Happy to see this thread too! Am far from making a decision myself too and would rather wait after my visits, but some ideas are forming here and there.
  15. I second this! You have some great options already @awhiterussian Also while it's true some programs are stronger in an area (like Francophone/colonial studies) than others, I think lots of amazing professors who specialize in that area can be found in schools that are maybe not as well known for that field as other schools. From what I've heard it's one of the most popular subfields of French right now so I think lots of professors will be open to students working on that! During my visit to WashU a professor mentioned that one of the professors I cited the most for my senior thesis teaches at UNebraska-Lincoln. That's a school that I overlooked, but if I knew about that earlier maybe I would've applied because his work intrigued me (then again--Nebraska). Sometimes it could be about finding the right person. Interests could change too, grad students told me they've seen their interests change as they took classes.
  16. My visit to WashU was so fantastic. It was wonderful to talk to students (from first year to ones who found jobs teaching) and faculty, and especially, imo, talk to other applicants. I love a lot of things about the program and area. Now I rest for a couple days until my next visit. For anyone reading this in the future--visits are great great great. I feel like websites will just never do justice to a program, you just have to go if possible.
  17. Thank you! Just finished my visit and it was fantastic, though sadly I mostly saw the area around the university and a little of Clayton. It seems pretty nice there.
  18. Campus visit tomorrow and I am so so excited. Talking about my interests with this one professor will be a highlight for sure. And getting a feel of the campus, too. Lots of meetings and hanging out with grad students which sounds like a blast (lol what a nerd i know).
  19. Congrats on UConn, CUNY and Northwestern guys!
  20. No word from a program I will visit very soon on the hotel room. I wish they at least let me know they are sending that info soon cause I need it to plan my visit better.
  21. I've bookmarked this thread. Thanks everybody!
  22. Hi everybody. I was invited for a campus visit for a humanities program but I am technically not admitted yet. In this situation typically, do programs reject people after a visit? (from your observations) I'm worried because the visit was never referred to as an interview and a friend of mine assured me that in most cases a reimbursed visit would mean they are very interested in me, but I'm also fearing rejection and not making a good impression. This program is very selective, according to their website only 9 students across all years are enrolled, so I figured competition could be intense. However, numbers-wise I'm not exactly sure what to expect--I asked a current graduate student about the visit but he never mentioned if the visit was meant to select one or two candidates out of a larger group. Perhaps I'm stressed over nothing!
  23. I was going to ask this. I suppose those come a couple days before the visit (though knowing before could certainly help planning.) We must understand admin people are very busy, I appreciate them arranging my visits a lot. They've all been very helpful.
  24. Counting down the days for my first 2 visits. What are you guys doing for visit prep? I bought a couple shirts and am thinking of what to ask. Reading articles by professors and just patiently waiting for my visit schedules.
