  1. Thank you so much everybody for the advice. I was thinking of maybe asking my parents for one of their mattresses (all my siblings but one are off to college so they have a few) but now that I think about it, I should look into one that's decent, even if it's not super cheap. I'll be on the lookout for furniture at the places y'all suggested (and will definitely look out for bed bugs or similar). My place will have a stove and fridge fortunately, but a microwave is a must!
  2. Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone here had experience furnishing an apartment on a budget. August will be the first time I'll live in an apartment with furniture of my own, so I'm trying to think where I can find a cheap bed and mattress, table, chair, and maybe a couch. I'm thinking of flea markets/used goods stores, Craigslist and Facebook marketplace but I was wondering if anybody here had experience getting affordable furniture somewhere else. Thanks!
  3. I'll be saving to furnish my future apartment! Doing some reading will help, and some language learning to fulfill the language requirement.
  4. Congratulations!!! You were one of the first members I interacted with here on gradcafe, and I've been following your story (not in a stalk-ish way I swear). I'm really happy to hear the news.
  5. I got this job to help me pay for my apartment deposit and to maybe furnish it a little (or at the very least, get a mattress) and let's just say it's a crappy job. There were 3 employees who were very nice to me and the manager seems nice too (up til now at least) but this manager assistant was rude and gave me conflicting instructions. And tomorrow I have a 9-hour shift starting early in the morning.
  6. I love discovering new artists and becoming obsessed with their music. Kate Nash--where have you been all my life?
  7. Do you have any previous French Lit experience prior to the Comp Lit MA? Some programs are strict about that and prefer people who have either a BA or MA in French. If you're comparing 2 texts in French I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do that in a French program as opposed to a Comp Lit one. On the other hand, for most schools as long as you show you have all the qualifications and provide them with good writing samples and recommendations, you would be a strong candidate.
  8. You could get a cellphone plan that offers unlimited data and use the phone as a wifi hotspot when you're using your laptop. In my experience Verizon has the best internet coverage for mobile devices. Most people pay 2 different services: a phone plan and home internet plan, but in theory you could use your phone's mobile data for your home needs as well.
  9. Let me know about the FB group! It's a great idea. I think I'll get a place through WashU, in University City or Skinker.
  10. so i actually haven't notified this one school that i am not attending, i'm just beyond embarrassed to say no given how amazing they have been to me. I'm heartbroken.
  11. Just looking for housing over here. Doing it online is stressing me out since I can't see the place/neighborhood for myself, but I can't afford to travel right now. Oh well...
  12. They said they're not the best when it comes to maintenance and such. I was looking at Yelp reviews and that seems to be a common complaint, too. Given how most of their places are filled, I wouldn't give that too much weight, though. Their places seem comfortable and convenient and as a first year that's just what I need.
  13. Everybody: is there a substantial difference between Skinker Debaliviere and University City (North of Delmar across WashU's North Campus)? The Skinker place I am looking at is cheaper and frankly the difference between services offered is minimal so I am leaning towards there, but I am concerned about safety and such. I've also heard north of Delmar it can get rough, so I guess I'm wondering about safety for both places. I'm not considering elsewhere, I want to be within walking distance due to lack of a car (someone suggested Pasadena Hills in another website, lol). Current grad students were lukewarm or against housing with Quadrangle but their places seemed fine for me, and it would be just easier for me.
  14. I agree with Beaudreau, perhaps you're giving this too much weight. Although this case was one of the most shocking in recent times surrounding sexual crimes, it hasn't been the only one. Stanford with the Brock Turner case, and the Columbia rape controversy also caused major backlash. In spite of those respective universities mishandling both cases to an extent, they are still known as places with top-notch academics.
  15. I'm not in your field but the difference in location and life seems substantial enough that I would perfectly understand why you would choose School B. Bottom line, you won't be able to do well if you aren't happy, and location can determine happiness a lot. It also boils down to preference of small vs. large department, small could mean more attention from faculty (more guidance) which will come in handy when it's time to look for a job.
  16. I vote school B! I'm also gay so I get your concern about location so much (I'm living in the rural South right now, so you can imagine how things are haha). Universities are usually good places to be LGBT, but whenever you want to step outside the academic bubble, it's nice to know that you'll have support and resources related to our community available should you need them. And of course, having family close is convenient.

  18. When I visited Bloomington it stroke me as a beautiful little town with lots of amenities for its size. They have buses to Indianapolis and Chicago if you ever feel like going! I second those saying you should give it a chance.
  19. You absolutely should! I'm a Latino in the US who majored in French, and the number of times I've been told that I should've majored in Spanish instead is irritating. It's necessary and good to know one's community, but it also broadens one's mind to study other cultures, communities and languages. The background of a researcher should not matter as long as they are acquainted with a subject or field. It's also sort of a microaggression that you are expected to represent just your community. Other people are never questioned when they decide to study communities other than their own, yet for some, minority students are supposed to just study their own communities? It makes no sense! We all have a right to express our intellectual curiosity in any way we like. That specific 'criticism' is shallow, and you should not pay much attention to it.
  20. Agree with @brainlass If you're looking for a format, this helped me: https://www.thoughtco.com/sample-email-declining-graduate-program-admission-1685886
  21. one of the schools i notified that I wasn't attending never got back to me about it. It feels a little weird, I hope they're not mad at me
  22. apparently i won the day on this forum the 26th lmao I also applied for a Starbucks job to save money while I move and here's to hoping they call me cause I need this
  23. hi everybody! anybody coming to WashU? how's the housing search going, any tips? Excited to become a bear
  24. I was doing so well today, very upbeat and stuff and someone just took all their negative energy into me and I feel awful now. I don't like when people are mean to me because they're having a shit day. I don't like living here and I can't wait to move.
