  1. Just came to say hi to my alma mater town. I miss Chucktown a lot haha
  2. That was rude of them, I'm afraid of a similar response I guess emails with professors and YouTube tours of those schools will have to do
  3. Guys, if a school doesn't mention a recruitment/visit day...is it safe to assume they don't have that option?
  4. I found a good reddit thread for male fashion for a campus visit. Apparently STEM fields tend to be more formal than social sciences and humanities: https://www.reddit.com/r/gradadmissions/comments/7ycory/male_fashion_guide_what_to_wear_on_campus_visits/
  5. I also have the same question. Let me sub and wait for someone who's gone on visits before. Congrats on your acceptance!
  6. Just talked with another professor and she was so kind too. They're making the decision process so hard ?
  7. We had an Italian applicant in the French thread! I'll tag them here. @meliboeus
  8. I had two wonderful calls with professors. One of them even told me that regardless of where I went I could let him know and always network because we have the same interest in Algeria. He was very kind. I had a third call that went okay--my phone signal was awful. I much prefer Skype now because I live in a rural place where phones hate me
  9. Hello everybody! I'm not in the English department (French here) but I'm also in-between acceptances and visits. My first visit will be to WashU St. Louis later this month and I'm really excited. I plan to ask about the curriculum, student life, placement, and just get to know faculty members. I also really want to get a feel of the city! Then I'll go to Stanford three days after that and I'm just nervous because I haven't been officially accepted. I feel like being myself is the way to go, but I'll also research more about the faculty members I'm meeting. I have family in the Bay area so hopefully I'll get to see the city too! And then 2 weeks later I'll go to Indiana U Bloomington. The tips here are really useful, I was worried about the dress code so I think I'll do business casual just to be on the cautious side.
  10. Congratulations on Boston @Monsieur Vénus and @HomewardBound ! Their program is great and the city looks wonderful.
  11. You could prove proficiency by taking an official exam in one of your languages. French has the DELF/DALF, Spanish has the DELE Cervantes etc. The Oral Proficiency (OPI) exam is offered in a lot of languages too. That would prove only comprehension, though. I second Glasperlenspieler's suggestions to prove you can tackle a text in a foreign language in the academic sense.
  12. SAME HERE OH MY GOD. I applied because a diversity recruiter told me I could get a fee waiver so I went ahead and applied, it couldn't hurt. I was beyond surprised when they offered to flight me for a campus visit.
  13. Do you guys know if schools book hotel rooms closer to the date of the visit? 3 schools have booked my flights and said they would book hotel as well, but I haven't heard back about that.
  14. Thank you! I have no idea right now, I wasn't planning on getting some of these acceptances. I think I'll decide after visit days. Thank you! A Rutgers professor notified me informally of my acceptance over email. I think they'll send official decisions out this week.
  15. OHHH Thank you so much for this thread! Well, I finally have all my results except for Stanford, who have invited me over for a campus visit and afterwards will officially accept or reject me. Funding-wise only 2 schools have released the info, but the other 3 have informally told me they can offer full funding! Where am I decisions-wise right now? -There is one school I'm particularly excited about but I must wait to hear more! Nothing set in stone. -I have scheduled 3 campus visits which will also inform my decision. I am excited about getting to know faculty, departments and cities. You can't really fully know a school and city in 2 days, but oh well. Such is life. -One school seems like it has a nice community, but the stipend they offered me is relatively low, if affordable for the area. The area also worries me a little--I want to live in a more urban environment. Still, I am hesitating to say no yet because my parents have asked me to wait until after my campus visits. - I feel like I'm too old to obey my parents in this regard, but what they're saying is valuable. Patience is key.
  16. Thank you! I'm sure acceptances are coming for you, it is still early! About a POI, I mentioned in all my applications two or three professors I could see myself working with, but I never contacted anybody in particular before submitting my application. After getting acceptances I've been talking with a few POIs, though.
  17. Got into Rutgers and now I know all my results! (Well Stanford isn't official yet, but otherwise yeah). The email was for some reason placed on the Spam folder, so I'm glad I decided to check that.
  18. Thank you! I should definitely play my records more often, especially in the dark, it's magical. And you're right, I don't know why I'm feeling so negative I have lots going on.
  19. oh it's me again lmao Should I go to the doctor for gastritis? It's not letting me sleep well, along with anxiety. Just ugh.
  20. Thank you @madamoiselle and Homeward! @HomewardBound they haven't mentioned recruiting day to me, but I'd love to go! T
  21. I applied because they had faculty interested in my research interests and overall seemed a nice program with an exchange program and the usual. I suppose a visit and talking with students could be good to learn more about it though.
  22. My dad isn't the kindest person out there. I cannot understand people who live with their parents for graduate school to save rent. I like saving money but if given the option to I'd rather get away.
  23. Got into Pittsburgh! The only one I'm waiting for now is Rutgers.
