Do any NY schools have a FB group yet?? I'm always trying to find some and guess what they could be called but this is definitely way more efficient...

I literally just made an account moments ago just to tell you that this would be incredibly weird. Do not bring your mother. Nobody else will have parents (or friends) there. You are an adult and this will make you seem like an immature child. I don't know of any program/circumstance in which it would be normal to bring a parent.

Both are amazing, congrats!! Honestly, since they're both pretty similar I say go to whichever one gives you more funding.

    1. We are very strong in terms of research! In a lot of classes we get exposed to the latest research in the field, some of which are conducted by our own professors. Not everyone participates in research but everyone who wanted a research position in a lab got one as far as I know. We do have paid research positions! Obviously it is a little bit harder to get depending on the professor's funding but it is possible.
    2. Most people live in the dorms, some live off campus around the area, and a small number try to save money by commuting from home. Most people babysit, some do work study in the school or retail. It is definitely possible to be working part time for 10-20 hours (at least in the first year) as long as you manage your time.
    3. A few people get in every year. It is really competitive though and everyone in our year who had gotten it are bilingual.
    4. The fact that multicultural focus is infused throughout the program! Also, only one extra class was necessary to get the bilingual extension so it will save time and money.

Hi @zurako!  I’ve found it really difficult to pin down accurate information on TC, so I’d be SO appreciative if you could answer a few of my questions! Thank you!!
    1. Would you say that the school is fairly research-based? I’m interested in pursuing research and I’m wondering how many students participate in the labs in the department/if research is emphasized as part of the TC experience. Do you know if there are any paid research positions available, or is it strictly volunteer-based?    2. Where do most of your cohort members live? I know I could save some money on tuition by attending TC over a school like Northwestern, but it would definitely cost me more in terms of living expenses so I'm wondering if it'll be 100% worth it. Do you or many of your classmates have jobs in addition to your schooling?    3. Would you happen to know if any of your classmates are pursuing the NYCDOE scholarship for some help with paying off their student loans? I’m very interested in this avenue and am wondering if it’s a feasible option.   4. And lastly, did you find yourself torn between two schools when you were in this position last year? How did you decide on Columbia?    Thank you so very much! I’m planning on attending the TC open house in early April, but I’m a little nervous as I only have a week to make a decision after I check out the program and facilities. I really appreciate your input!

I have been accepted to Longwood University, James Madison University, and University of Virginia. Every SLP I have spoken to has told me to go with the one that will cost me the least amount of money, but so many things factored into deciding to go to UVA. While it is the most expensive program of the three, it is only 40 minutes away from home so I can commute. This means I would be able to live with my husband and save on rent. In addition, I fell in love with the program and the level of support offered by the faculty. All of these things made it feel like the right choice for me.
I have not notified UVA of my decision yet because I am still waiting to hear about financial offers. I have turned down my spot at Longwood so I hope that went to someone on the waitlist!

@sprklinthe I get that this can be a sore subject, but that's actually why this thread was made. I didn't get in anywhere last year and it hurt. Luckily, there are multiple places to discuss that (and the worry when waiting) on this forum. This thread was specifically created so that there would be a place for those with admissions to let off stress without making those still waiting feel bad.

Best of luck with your programs! Hopefully, you'll be joining us in worrying over the decision process soon enough! <3

filing cabinets are good. any sort of filing system.

corkboard and coloured notecards. especially helpful for visually mapping out a long-term research project.

a calendar of some sort. do you write in an agenda? use your computer's calendar? want something on the wall? time management will be key in your life and you'll need this. badly.

external hard-drives and thumb drives. back up everything. save it on your computer and your thumb drive at all times. back it all up on the external HD once every two weeks or whenever you remember. keep updated copies of your work in two or three places. i had a friend who left everything on a thumb drive, and HE LOST IT (he luckily had a month-old version of his work saved in his email). i had another friend who used his laptop and his external HD only, and spilled coffee on both while he was doing a back-up. he promptly quit graduate school and he was ABD. (he claims the decision to quit came two days before the terrible spill, but i don't believe him).

a laptop. if you've already got a desktop, then get one of those little netbooks. they're light and they have long battery life.

several different comfy chairs. you will spend most of your time sitting down. get a variety of "feels" with your chairs. hard and upright, soft and sunken in, good for stretching your legs out straight, something that reclines, an ergonomically correct stool. trust me.

I'm in the same boat as you are...deciding between NYU and a few other programs. Even though school websites have a lot of information, I am finding it hard to distinguish between them. I am also unable to attend admitted students day, which I think would be super helpful in making a decision!

I would also consider what you want to do in your future career.  If you want to work in a school, will either school (or both) provide the necessary requirements for you to get your teaching certification?  I mention this because I ran across this problem with one of the schools I was accepted to. Since I'm not 100% sure where I want to work, I wanted a program that would provide me the education to either work with adults or children.  Depending on your state, you may want to look into those requirements.  But if you don't want to work with children (or in a school) you don't have to consider it.
