Can I get a second MA in philosophy?

So, I was in a similar mindset as you earlier this year. However, thankfully I ended up having great results over all (3 Acceptances and 3 WL). Getting a 2nd MA is not unheard of, and especially for international students. When you apply again, you should definitely apply to MA programs (like UW-M, Oklahoma State, U of Arkansas, and few others - these are some of the funded MAs and that's why i mention them). Your recommendation letters will mean more coming from people in the U.S especially if they are known in your AOI and the chances of an American, UK, or Australian philosopher being well known are more likely. However, I'm not sure what is your GPA (do you guys have GPA or something else), or what your writing sample is like. If you'd like I can give it a read. But, to be honest your GRE scores could definitely improve. Your verbal isn't terrible but for a good program you should definitely retake it. Your AW is pretty low, but I think that's less important, if at all. Hopefully, this helps.

    Preparations for the Fall

I've been a grad student (Master's) and graduated with top grades. Now, I'm starting my Phd. And I agree with maxhgns... yes, it is difficult but you still have time to do things. It really depends on how well you schedule your life. If you do stuff chaotically, then you will feel like you never have time. I'd say just relax.. chill, its not that bad.

Anyone heard from Stanford's philosophy MA?

You should email them or maybe even call. And as mentioned by others, you turned down other offers just in case Stanford came through or are we missing something?

    Declining Offers/Withdrawing Applications Thread

Just declined U of Nebraska. Hopefully, it'll help someone on here or not. Probably by 4/13 I'll be turning down 1 or 2 more. Just waiting to get more info from the departments.

    I’ve heard similar things.

    Waitlists

Hmm interesting, what's your AOI? But, obviously OU (Oklahoma University) and UVA are not at the same level but you were waitlisted at both. But UVA apprently has a giant waitlist this year or maybe every year, idk. I'm willing to bet you have a decent chance at OU. is it for an MA or PhD?

It can be combination of multiple things for different programs. What schools did you apply too?

    MA AOI and PhD Admissions

I think having a sample paper that matches your claimed AOI helps. But I don't think having a strong sample paper on X but the department specializes in Y is going to hurt you. Your fit in the department is pretty important.

    Central European University

Yea, I agree.. I think he was just a bad professor and student. I really hope he's not a representative of the CEU body. If there is a professor CEU that you think is good in your AOI, you should go. And I agree with @philosophypuppy that my example is anecdotal but I thought I should mention it since it directly related to you question.

    Central European University

What’s you AOI? And one of the professors at my last program went there. I’m gonna be honest he was definitely one of the dumber professors there. I TA’d for him and he didn’t know basic logic. Like what makes an argument valid. He told one of the guys that they never had to study logic at CEU and it showed. I think he knew one thing some obscure topic in continental philosophy (focoult and symbiosis, what ever that is). He was so bad that the department took away his logic courses. And in my own conversation he seemed ill prepared to teach most philosophy other than that niche he knew. Now he could be an oddity and just a bad student but it doesn’t look to good for CEU.

    Choosing MA: Tufts/Brandeis/CUNY

CUNY MA shouldn’t be on the radar. It’s not worth it. I had the same question here a while back. It’s nothing more than a cash cow. And tufts, if money is not much of an issue.

Congrats! Are you gonna take it?

Choosing between SFU and Tufts: MA Phil

Kind of a late response, sorry. Honestly, those are both great programs from what I understand. Small programs can be beneficial, because you will probably get more of your professors time. And since MA is short you'd wnat to get as much face time as possible to secure a decent LOR. However, a big programs may allow you to find you own niche of people within the the grad students. For your worry about Atlanta for a queer individual.. I wouldn't worry to much about it. I have an aunt who lives in AT and its much more of a big-city metropolitan type of city than you'd expect. AT is surprisingly diverse and any big city like that, most "non-traditional" type of people are usually alright (I'm a minority in the South too, but live in a metro) lol. Besides, it is only two years and then you can move to your next city.

Writing Sample and Asking For Advice

I was in a similar situation last year. So, I can sympathize. If you'd like i can look at your paper too, I'm not an ancient person.. but I can probably help with the logic or writing. I teach at a university where they have an amazing ancient prof from UT and i can ask him to see if he'd be willing to help you out. He's very busy with his own stuff (studens, referring etc.) but I can definitely ask. Also, may I ask where are you located? I could suggest some other resources, I know of some schools that do writing sample workshops during the fall. PM me if you're interested.

Choosing between SFU and Tufts: MA Phil

Tufts does have an upper hand... in a way I guess... but again like others have said, money and debt should be one of your top concerns in this field. Jobs are very scarce and will be in the future. SFU is a great program and you wouldn't be in debt. Tufts might be better but it's not worth going into massive debt, which will accrue interest for 5-7 years. Unless you are going to make payments on those loans through out your MA and PhD. A debt of 20-30 k can balloon significantly in 5-7 years. There are amortization templates online, and just go put some numbers in those and you will see how fast debt can go up when left unpaid, with interest just expounding for 5-7 years. So, unless you have money and won't need much debt, then tuft should be an option. Otherwise, go with SFU and forget Tufts. Seriously, it's simply not worth it.

    MA CUNY

So, I got rejected from CUNY for phd but got an email from them about their MA (unfunded lol). Besides the you're an excellent candidate but unfortunately you didn't make the PhD... blah blah ha.. the email seems to make the MA program sound great and very affordable (it actually kinda is, comparativly to other masters programs) First, I didn't even know they had an MA program. It's supposedly 3 semester long and is taught the "same" as the PhD students. I've been accepted to couple of schools and wait-listed at 2 more, so, I'm not going to take this "offer," but, I'm wondering whether anybody knows anything about CUNY's MA program. They don't have a placement record on the website.. or what help they provide for MA studetns (i couldn't find any, at least). Anyway, if anybody has heard anything or knows anybody at the MA program there... info would be helpful. For me and others who might have gotten the same email and may not have any other offers.

Offer Choice: Tufts MA or Cambridge MPhil?

You didn’t take metaphysic or epistemology?? Hmm those are somewhat important.. but obviously you’re good enough to make it to these top schools. So, I’m sure you’d be fine Honestly, both choices are great. But, if money isn’t a thing you should choose tufts. But, I’d go where you’d pay the least.

    Waitlists

I’m sure there are a decent number of people. 4 is pretty high and I’m sure you’ll get a spot. What’s your AOI?

    Well... damn..

Where do you decide to go?

Do you know your spot on the list at KU? I’ve heard through previous prof that they do usually end up going down the list.

hmmm interesting.... can i ask how do you know this? are you currently at CUNY?
