rosesandrecords reacted to socneuro in Fall 2019 Psychology PhD Applicants!
Hey all!
Just thought I'd share my good news. I applied to 6 schools this cycle, received official rejections from 2 schools, and expecting the other 4 to all be rejections as well since I've had no interview requests. I started applying to lab manager/lab coordinator positions and I've already gotten 2 interviews so far! I haven't officially gotten the jobs but I feel so much better after not getting any interview invites prior. I really thought my application wasn't good enough and honestly debated giving up on ever going to grad school, but just getting these interviews have really made me more excited and I'm definitely gonna work on my apps and try again next year!

I got an acceptance today and cried. I'm going to grad school, y'all ?
Sharing this process with all of you has definitely helped make this crazy application process a lot more bearable. Wishing acceptances on everyone!

Well, I just got a rejection email from my first choice program Really not looking good for a couple other schools as well. Trying to stay optimistic, as there are 3 more that I haven't heard from, but hard not to feel pessimistic at this point...

Aww UTSW is notoriously hard to get into across the board. I actually interviewed there many years ago for their masters of nutrition program (long story) and the interview process was brutal - they chewed me up and spit me out haha. I know this sounds like a "sour grapes" situation but fingers crossed you hear some good news soon!

To the person who got an interview from Loyola Chicago, was this a mass email?

My P.I. told me this year was the most competitive application cycle she's seen in the last 3-4 years. She took on two last year because of funding, and can only take one this year, but it's frustrating on their end too because she is having to be pickier this year even though (in her opinion) the applicants are much more qualified. If this is truly your dream career, I would encourage you to apply again and don't lose hope!

Congrats to everyone hearing back from UF! I didn't get an email so I'm assuming rejection...oh well!
In the same boat as you-hoping for good news for the both of us!

I also studied for the gre while working full time...it can be a lot. I used the Kaplan book to study, which I found helpful. I set aside entire days or several hours to devote to gre studying. What I think helped me the most was taking several full-length practice tests. I got diagnostic results from those and worked on the areas that needed improvement in between.
From my first time taking to test to the second, I ended up bringing my scores from 60th to 80th percentile in verbal, 32nd to 41st percentile in quantitative, and 56th to 83rd percentile in writing! I've been accepted into one of my top programs and I'm beginning this fall

Is anyone else considering retaking the GRE? I'm trying to decide if I should. I took it two years ago when I applied to Master's programs and did pretty well (157 V 155 Q 4.0 AW) but as I'm researching average scores for the programs I'm interested in, I'm noticing that they're all a few points higher than mine. I've talked to a couple other grad students and they retook it but did the same/a little worse, so I'm concerned about wasting my money and time on something that may not pay off. Is anyone else doing this or has anyone else done this? Help!!

hey there, I interviewed and was accepted to Auburn, one big thing that was pretty crummy at AU was the lack of child placements and externships. If you're wanting to work in child psych, I would really think twice of applying there. In the group interview with students, there were a few students applying for the child track and every student there said that the program was "working on adding more clinical placements". Hopefully some food for thought.
I ended up not accepting the program but it was really a lovely school and the program seemed very strong, just some exposure might be missed if you go there (it really is in the middle of no where Alabama).
