  1. Hi all! I am considering applying for the NSF fellowship for the 2019-2020 year and was wondering if anyone had any data on the amount of awards given to those who attend R2s versus R1s? I know I shouldn't be paranoid about stuff like that which is out of my control, but I cannot help but think that some of the reviewers would pay attention to things like that, especially if they were on the fence about one person vs another
  2. I didn't hear back either, but still hoping for the best! Though I think if we haven't heard back by today we are most likely not chosen
  3. This is probably a longshot since this thread has not been updated since 2015, but does anyone know of any facebook groups or such of current graduate students at SIU? I am considering renting a house instead of an apartment and was looking for potential housemates.
  4. I think the differences you list are spot on! If I were to add just 2 things 1) counseling programs also have more multiculturalism/“social justice” courses embedded in their curriculum. depending on the program, you may only have one or two at most for clinical programs whereas counseling programs have multicultural focus engrained in the curriculum 2) like personallycentered said, the populations you practice with are typically different. In counseling programs you are likely doing practicum at college/university counseling centers, though there are opportunities to work with other populations and external agencies as well depending on the program my advice is to not pick one or the other in terms of program type, but rather pick your programs based upon research interest match and the types of populations you want to provide counseling to and see if those programs have externship practica with those populations. Also, while personally entered is correct that most counseling psych programs are in education departments, some are in psych departments as well! Typically the ones in psych departments allot more collaborative research opportunities so just something to remain aware of
  5. Congrats! I went there for undergrad so feel free to let me know if you have any questions
  6. So I have heard nothing from one of the programs I applied to and yesterday marked a month since the interview. Their website says that they make admissions offers early-mid March, but I haven’t heard anything in terms of being accepted, rejected, or waitlisted. Could they just operate on an internal waitlist system similar to what you all were discussing above where they don’t tell candidates if they’ve been waitlisted? Should I politely email and inquire about my status? The POI did say he would be in touch after the interview and I know he is going to make his decision regardless of my email or not, but I just don’t know what I should do and it’s very anxiety inducing because the program is one of my top choices.
  7. In case any of y’all were curious: I emailed the graduate programs coordinator at VCU and she said so far to her knowledge only SM has extended an offer and that the other faculty have not told her about extending any offers yet. Good luck to everyone, hopefully we hear soon!!
  8. Thank you for your words, it helps a lot!! I think I’m just overthinking this situation too much and I should just be patient and see how it is and let myself be open to new experiences like everyone said
  9. Thank you for your reassurance!! Yeah I think you’re right, I mean adjustment is difficult for everyone in their own ways and I’m sure the current students there probably went through similar things so perhaps asking them will help I just don’t know much about the city which I guess is causing me anxiety but that will hopefully be alleviated by the visit
  10. this is exactly my dilemma! i am visiting later on in the month to get a better vibe of the city bc i did my interview online. i don't really have a preference bc i have spent time in both big and small cities, but i am worried about building community outside the program without much to do outside school
  11. how much is area playing a factor in y'all's decisions? would y'all go to a quieter town that is farther away from bigger metropolitan cities if you really liked the program?
  12. yes the students told me the same thing!! all my poi said was "i like to keep ppl in the know about their status" but didnt say anything beyond that. it is also one of my top choices so i wish the best for the both of us!!
  13. anyone hear anything from VCU after the interview?? i got conflicting messages from the current students/my poi about when I would hear back
  14. from my experience, the main difference between clinical and counseling is that clinical programs focus more on concerns related to psychopathology and direct treatment of DSM disorders. counseling is more related to vocational concerns, university counseling, or brief counseling sessions related to things such as identity concerns, interpersonal relationships, or overall psychosocial health. however, the main thing to recognize is that there are individual differences between programs. you could very well still find a clinical program that is more concerned with social justice and identity and you can very well find a counseling program that is more geared towards assessment and treatment of psychopathology. however, both are scientist-practitioner based which means you will get training in both research and practice and you will do an internship and complete a masters thesis and dissertation as well as publications/presentations for both. clinical programs also tend to be more CBT oriented (though not all) and you are typically working with clients in various age ranges (adults, children, seniors, and some programs even offer specialized tracks for each). counseling program practicums are usually at university counseling or career centers so you are likely working with college students. however, there are also external practicum opportunities in counseling programs where you can work with a wide range of clients, it just varies via program. counseling programs also usually ingrain social justice and multiculturalism throughout the curriculum, whereas you may only have one course on such in a clinical program. ultimately, acceptance is more related to individual fit with faculty member research interests as well as fit with the program training, rather than a question of which one is "easier" than the other because that is subjective and in my opinion not the right question you should be asking to determine your potential career path. i don't know much about school psychology unfortunately. i would say the main questions you should ask yourself are: what type of populations do i want to work with and research? what type of training am i looking for in terms of theoretical orientation with regards to treatment and assessments? what type of research do i want to conduct? remember, grad school is a long commitment, so it is good that you are doing your research now to figure out the differences between each! i wish i could be more helpful, but hopefully this helps a little
  15. got my first acceptance this morning from Southern Illinois!! definitely want to visit bc i did my interview over skype but i am super excited
  16. is anyone else interviewing at VCU on monday? it is the last interview i have on my list. what do y'all think the group interview is going to be like?
  17. Could the waitlist post at UTK please dm me your poi? Thank you!!
  18. i'll dm you with my impressions bc I already typed them up for someone else who couldnt make the interview haha so i already have them on hand
  19. Congratulations to the Tennessee poster! Could you please DM me your poi? Thank you and congrats again!!
  20. question: I am doing a series of skype interviews with a school in place of an in person interview and one of the faculty members never responded to me last week after I responded to her email requesting times that I was available. she wanted to interview me before 2/16 so do i send her a follow-up email asking her which of the times i suggested work for her or do i wait until the middle of the week to do so?
  21. so i know this question has been asked before, but i don't think anyone ever answered it: if a POI offered to answer any questions that you may have over email before the interview, what types of questions did you save for the interview and what did you ask over email? I just don't want to be presumptuous and act like I am entitled to all of his time and I don't want to put any of the other applicants at a disadvantage either. I also know that I should be proactive and seize the opportunity to show more interest but I am overthinking this wayyy too much and now it is almost time for my in person interview and I did not ask any questions over email even though the invite was extended mid-december because I felt like I was going to come off as entitled to his time and pushy. how did others in this situation navigate this??
  22. I emailed their programs coordinator and they said all interview invites had been sent out. Good luck to everyone who got an interview!
