ClausewitzIsCool reacted to HRL in Applications 2019
Yeah, happy to confirm for you! I got my Cornell rejection email today and it said: "Your application for admission to the Graduate Program in History for Fall 2019 has been given careful consideration by the faculty in the field. We regret that your application has not been approved for admission. The number of students who we can accept is limited and, as the overall quality of applicants is very high, it is not possible to offer admission to the many excellent students who would like to study with us. We appreciate your interest in History at Cornell and wish you success in continuing your studies at another university."

This is a good idea-- thank you!
I'm having a whirlwind weekend. I got my full funding scholarship, accepted my offer, and was notified today that I'm going to be published!

ClausewitzIsCool reacted to TMP in 2019 Visit Days/Decisions
Bringing the focus back to the point of this thread.... ASK (THE GRADUATE STUDENTS) ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES and the Department's attitude toward mental health concerns
During my last visitation day experience as a host back in 2016, when we discussed the inclusion of mental health services in student insurance/tuition, we could see quite a few faces sighing in relief. Clearly, it was on their minds but didn't know how to ask. While the discussion of mental health concerns has been more open, much more work needs to be done. The quality of mental health services to graduate students vary quite widely from institution to institution. Most of the focus has been on undergraduates but not enough on graduate students (or faculty too) and you'll want to make sure that the institutions that accepted you are well on their way to servin to the graduate student community or have already established support systems. Also, not all departments have caught up on the reality of depression/anxiety and the ways in which they truly affect students' well-being and progress to the PhD. You'll want to investigate how supportive the faculty is of students' well-being, particularly your POI and the older faculty whom you may be working with (they're of survivalist mentality-- one didn't talk about loneliness, depression, and anxiety that came with graduate school, you simply survived).

ClausewitzIsCool reacted to AP in Lifehacks & Study Tools
Ok, here are a couple of things I tried and worked for me:
1) Use the coursework years to build and consolidate a good social network. People you can cry with, and work with, and watch games with.
2) During exams, I gave myself the gift of learning something new. I picked up a new sport and went twice or thrice a week. It was MY moment away from books or screens, outside, and doing learning something besides the historiography of plantations.
3) Life hacks:
Save your work all the time in an external drive AND the cloud. Trust me. Embrace meal prep once a week. Attend events with free food. Use campus resources. You already "pay" for them. Do not underestimate the power of a good break. 4) Exercise helps fight depression and sleep issues. (In addition, do not underestimate a good sleep. If you have problems sleeping, consult with your doctor. I speak from experience).
5) Grad school is just a job, but it is very personal because you give up a lot to be there. Do not hesitate to ask for help. No one is expecting you (or anyone) to have all the answers, otherwise campuses wouldn't have so many resources. Use the reference librarians, your senior graduate students, support services, etc.
6) Study tools: I don't know your field but for taking notes I use OneNote, for citations I use Zotero, and for writing I use Scrivener. I also carry around a small notebook where I write down random things that I think of as I write. Eg: Look for three references on X.
All the best!

This is such a fantastic forum. I love seeing everyone have so much genuine support for one another!
I've gotten radio silence from almost all of the places I applied to, which I'm finally feeling okay about. I'm actually probably going to go to Villanova, depending on how funding goes! I applied for not only departmental funding, but an assistantship in the Graduate Office as well. Fingers crossed!

Long time listener, first-time caller. Haha, but seriously I've been watching this forum since at least December. Calculated my target schools accept/reject windows based on at least five years worth of historical data, the whole nine yards. This is one hell of an addictive site. So far I've received two acceptances and not a peep from my other target schools. My research interests revolve around military history, primarily 20th Century U.S. I’ve been enjoying the banter, posts of acceptances and rejections, and the great levels of mutual support given to each other. I hope this support continues across the discipline as we become colleagues in the near future. Best of luck to everyone, indeed. -

NYU is the wildcard now. Cornell's deadline was later so I'm prepared to wait, Penn's probably finished their interviews, Duke usually sends their rejections out on Thursday in V-day week. . . I know NYU send decisions out advisor by advisor, but little else. Didn't they release waitlist results or something on Monday last week?
Big hugs to everyone waiting! I know I could use one.

Just got word that I got into Duke! It's my first choice, and I'm so incredibly excited!! So if you see that admit on the results page, it's mine.
I'm a bit shy about sharing my focus/POI on here because anonymity etc, but if you've applied to Duke and you're curious, feel free to PM me!
