Counselling Psychology Applicants 2021 CANADA

UVic has specific course prereq eh (ED-D 418 Introduction to Theories of Counselling)? I believe Athabasca offers an equivalent if you want to do an online course! I believe it was PSYC 406 or something. It's NOT 405 b/c that's what UCalgary requires. https://www.athabascau.ca/syllabi/psyc/psyc406.php Edit: Double check with UVic's program though. I didn't apply there and this is all from memory as I believe an acquaintance applied there and informed me of this. Edit 2: Yup its 406 https://www.uvic.ca/education/psychology/assets/docs/ED-D Course Equivalencies Chart.pdf -

Sending GRE Scores if they are waived...
Mickey26 replied to Aminta Greene's topic in Psychology Forum
THIS. You can also email the specific school and ask for clarification! Good luck -
I know for us (Canada, Atlantic provinces), in-person testing at the university won't resume until classes are back in-person. We were hoping that would be the case for Jan 2021, but looks like our uni is planning on having online classes, thus, in-person testing will not be resumed. Might be idiosyncratic to the universities though, so worth asking your PI Good luck!

Chatting about potential research projects/dissertation topics. Although these convos can be done during the interview phases. If THEY request the zoom meeting, I would jump at the chance for sure. B/c it shows they're inherently interested in you. If they don't request a meeting, I personally would not request a meeting (they might be busy/not doing any meetings at all so want to keep a fair playing field, etc). Again, I did not have meetings prior to submitting my application and I don't think it hindered me, personally. I'm happy to discuss my experience via private mssg But to be clear I had 0 clin experience but relatively extensive research exp for my level of training.- 2,510 replies

Protip I tell all my mentees: if you perceive something as being a shortcoming on your application (GRE quant scores, etc), always ask at least one of your references to address it explicitly and say WHY its not a shortcoming (eg explain away the perceived shortcoming). For example, have the referee say in their letter that although you scored lower on the GRE quant, you have demonstrated mastery in stats based on your performance in your stats classes (A, A+ etc). I say "perceived" bc as applicants, we're v critical about our own application! So honestly a 56th quant score might not actually be a shortcoming to faculty (I think thats one of the best quant scores I've personally seen/heard of), but you can still get a referee to address it in their letter regardless.- 2,510 replies

Honestly, I didn't have any pre-interviews prior to applying and I was still offered interviews in 3/5 of the schools I applied to. Yes we had email exchanges prior to me submitting an application in Dec (eg brief chat about research), but I never did an informal meeting. When I applied for Sept 2019, you wanted something over the 50th percentile for quant. So I'd say its not a bad score- 2,510 replies

University of British Columbia (UBC) All psych programs: "For the 2020-2021 Admissions cycle, if you are unable to take the GRE for COVID related reasons, we will accept your application without GRE scores. Please note that we will take into accounts the significant disruptions caused by COVID-19 and students will not be penalized for receiving pass/fail grades during this period. Please refer to the Program Requirements section for information on admissions requirements and GPA calculations." Source: https://psych.ubc.ca/graduate/admissions/

Email the profs directly. B/c program coordinators probs wont know, and they'd just email the profs anyways. So if you email the profs directly, you save time for everyone LOL I mean supervisors get so many applicants I doubt they'd compare notes about who emailed whom; They really don't have that kind of time. Really your personal statement should be tailored to Supervisor #1; the people you put down for #2 and 3 most likely won't even look at your application because they have applicants who put them as #1.- 2,510 replies

Wait another cycle or start now? [Clinical Psychology]
Mickey26 replied to hrj_BA's topic in Psychology Forum
You can PM me about Canadian progs I'm Canadian though so may not be able to help with international student stuffs If you're interested in forensics, check out Ryerson University in Canada. Lots of faculty members doing forensic research but are clinical profs. Good luck! Yes, if you're a study coordinator, it demonstrates you have a variety of skill (collaboration, communication, time management, management of ppl), and sets you up nicely for a more independent role, etc. -

So my department actually increased student's stipend (its been a project many years in the making and I assume it was approved prior to COVID lol). In terms of grant funding, a lot of competitions in Canada and the States have been put on hold or called off completely--this directly impacts whether supervisors are able to take on new students, etc. So far, I haven't seen any graduate student awards/scholarship competitions being cancelled/impacted, but that could be me. There is a hiring freeze happening at most universities in Canada as far as I'm aware. Meaning new RAs/Lab coordinators etc are put on hold right now.- 2,510 replies

Canada USask Clinical Psych is not accepting admissions for 2021-2022 (aka the upcoming application cycle). "Due to the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the clinical psychology program is not able to accept a new cohort of students for the 2021-2022 academic year. Thus, the program will not be accepting applications for the program in the fall of 2020. We anticipate resuming our normal admissions process in the following year (i.e., accepting applications in the fall of 2021 for those wanting to begin the program in the fall of 2022)."
