Prestigious program or not?
madandmoonly replied to Lowe's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Unpopular opinion but: rank isn't the most important thing in the world. -
Campus visit thoughts?
madandmoonly replied to procrastinator1's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I’m here! I’m at Rice! Sitting outside reading some V. Woolf before things get wild in a few hours; it’s slightly chilly and I can hear the birds. I am content. -

What to ask during visits?

What to ask during visits?
madandmoonly replied to dilby's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I love the similarity of our situations. I plan to ask questions about the vibe of the cohorts and department in general & advising styles of profs to determine "quality of life" aspects. For the one that's "not as a good of a fit," I'd ask about what kinds of dissertations graduates are working on/have worked on in the past to determine if anyone is doing similar work to myself. And what kinds of classes are being offered. -

How to celebrate good news?
madandmoonly replied to Musmatatus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Super relatable, @jillcicle. I feel like doing an MA has made me so much more aware of what I'm looking for in a PhD program! -

How to celebrate good news?

Yeah, yesterday my mother asked me why she seemed more excited than I am. I'm a chronic worrier so I've just been stressing more than anything. I did get coffee with my advisor right after it happened, so I guess that was somewhat celebratory. I think after I officially accept I'll be able to feel somewhat more excited? But then, as someone who just completed a master's, I'm just kind of like, oh god this is gonna be hard. Haha. -
UT Austin Acceptances

No idea re: UT placement rates, but I do suspect their waitlist will see some movement™ before April 15th. ? Hope this helps you! -
Post-Shutout
madandmoonly replied to monsterheart's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Checking my scores on the GRE just now, I had a 159 Verbal & 142 Quant, and I'm really glad it had absolutely no effect on me getting into two programs within the top 40. I hate standardized testing and didn't even read most of the questions on the math section. -

I don't think I'll be able to help you, sorry, but I'll hope that we're cohort-mates! Or that something else equally great works out for you! -
I also want to point towards Sunaura Taylor's Beasts of Burden: Animal and Disability Liberation. It's great. The Deleuze & Guattari full chapter name is "Becoming-Intense, Becoming-Animal, becoming-Imperceptible" & is indeed from A Thousand Plateaus! & if you like them, @NoNameGuy, you might like Brian Massumi's What Animals Teach Us About Politics which is really Deleuzian. I think having studied philosophy is a huge asset for you! There's a lot of synergy between the two fields -- While in an "English" program, my focus is on philosophy or "theory" more often than not. OH, and Alexis Shotwell's Against Purity has a few chapters on animals, and talks about veganism in a way I find compelling!

In my SOP I sometimes used the term "global lit" and sometimes "ethnic lit," but didn't realize there could be a problem with this terminology... (I'm also a POC here.) Hope I didn't offend anyone in these programs! -

Post here to get your worries off your chest
madandmoonly replied to Teaching Faculty Wannabe's topic in Waiting it Out
Worries: One of the current grad students I've spoken to at the Dream School™ said that the Dream POI™ is "kind of particular to deal with" & I have no idea what that is supposed to mean & it's really freaking me out?? I know that not everyone works well together so it could literally just be this one person's personal opinion but it's like... wow I hope this doesn't turn out horribly. Excitement: I really want to work with them still...- 274 replies

Officially heard back from all the schools I applied to (well, + one interview request, but for the sake of argument). I look forward to going through this process all over again in 20 years when I'm bored & itching for more suffering, & seeing which (out-of-state) schools I can, hopefully, get into (am I joking, probably not). -
