  1. I also applied to PhD programs right out of undergrad. I graduated in December, though, so I've had this semester off to obsess over everything. When I met with a professor early last fall to discuss applying to PhD programs, he said he usually discourages people from applying right out of undergrad but that I could try and see how it goes. I'm both shocked and extremely pleased to have been admitted to a top choice PhD program with full funding. I kept having Imposter Syndrome throughout the application process (especially when I left the "Publications" and "TA experience" portions of the application blank). Now that I've been admitted, I've been trying to remind myself that clearly if the graduate committee read my app, interviewed me, and invited me to attend, then I must be qualified. I'm going to be doing a PhD in French Literature, so I've been trying to read some of the texts from my program's first year reading list (which is 80 texts long!) to get ahead. I hope everyone's application season is going well!
  2. Hi everyone! I decided to create this thread for those heading to NYU in the Fall. I'm going to be attending as a French Lit PhD student! I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!

    New York, NY

    I'm going to be moving to NYC in the Fall! Housing is definitely my biggest ~city~ concern, especially seeing as I have a dog and a lizard. I'm looking forward to all the different events and cultural aspects of living in NYC, though!
  4. Thanks for this info! I'm going to Hong Kong in a couple weeks (I used to live there!)! I might look into Uniqlo while out there because I'm going to be leaving the desert and moving to New York for grad school! Definitely will need some warmer clothes
  5. Just got my Berkeley rejection, saw that one coming, but it's nice to at least know officially. I also got my notification that I was waitlisted at UCSB yesterday. That's all of my programs!
  6. @Ellekori Thank you! I applied for the PhD in French Literature. I'm not sure if they've reached out to the joint PhD people or not. I believe it's also with the Institute of French Studies (unless I'm mistaken), so perhaps the procedure is different?
  7. I had interviewed with NYU last week and was told on Friday that I would hear back soon. I had a feeling it would be today. New York is a couple hours ahead of me, so I decided this morning that I would just lay in bed until I received a decision. At 7:30 am - nothing. At 8:13 - "Admissions NYU" email comes through. I jump up and read the email, written in French, and delight over the words "la bonne nouvelle" (the good news) and quickly read the rest. I ran out of my room and told my family. Then I pulled my NYU shirt from 2009 out of my dresser and threw it on. Soo excited!
  8. I was admitted to NYU! Super excited!
  9. Thanks @Moods, I'll check it out!
  10. I feel the need to check my application statuses even though it's the weekend and I know I probably won't be hearing back til at least next week.
  11. I've been doing a lot of reading, drawing, listening to audiobooks, and walking my dog. Drawing is nice because it forces me to focus on something else and it can be quite cathartic. I have to work on other relaxing things, such as watching Netflix. Haven't sat down to watch a show in a long time, but perhaps I'll watch something in French!
  12. XD I feel that!
  13. Still waiting to hear back from my Comp Lit program! Hopefully soon!
  14. @Ellekori I would focus on your research interests, your sample(s) you submitted for the program, and how the program is a good fit for you (resources, profs). I.e., Why have you chosen the particular field of research within French literature, What prior coursework/readings/experiences brought you to that field? Also, I'd recommend rereading your statements in case they want you to elaborate on anything you detailed there. And of course, don't forget your questions for the program! I wore a nice shirt and business pants (I had a suit jacket but it was too hot to wear). Best of luck with your interview!
  15. Had my interview today. Now the wait begins anew.
  16. @vam1390, I also have an interview tomorrow! We're going to rock it! Looking forward to being on the other side Somewhat hoping they're just like, "we want you," but I know that's unlikely ^^;
  17. That's my same area of interest! But for me, it's with French medieval and early modern texts ^^ I'll check out Homosexuality in Renaissance England, that sounds really cool!
  18. @Ellekori Just French Lit for me! Though I am curious about potentially doing a certificate in French Studies with IFS.
  19. XD I screen-shotted that and sent it to my English major friends
  20. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2rhj2OqYo0 This has just been stuck in my head all day. "It seems I'm spending so much time waiting And when you can't make up your mind, I'm waiting for you. If that's what it requires then waiting's what I'll do. So hurry yourself up, I'm waiting."
  21. This image felt very applicable for this post.
  22. I'm thinking there probably won't be any updates over the weekend. Yet I still feel the inclination to check. ^^;
