  1. Does anyone know if Columbia’s offer comes with waived health insurance?
  2. There’s a lot of UC’s and they vary in terms of competitiveness, funding, and focuses! Almost all of their websites will have information on this.
  3. Is anyone admitted to Columbia considering/leaning towards another program? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to discuss it here! I'm just curious.
  4. Eighteenth-century and I have an offer. I’m currently leaning towards a different program but I can’t say 100% until all my visits are complete, which will be April 4th! I’m trying to make a decision as quickly as I can for the sake of those on the waitlists!
  5. I don’t know what you should do either, but I wouldn’t worry about that right this moment. I’d take a week or so to let it all process and come to terms with everything. It’s so amazing you’re recognizing your worth and value! Hold onto that and don’t be swayed by whatever comes in the next few months. The best advice I ever got was: “Goals, not plans.” Your goal is to go to grad school, and how you accomplish that will shift and change as time goes on. I’m sorry again that you’re dealing with this. Feel free to PM me if you need someone to bounce ideas off of or just to vent to!!
  6. I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this and having to deal with these feelings. It is in no way a reflection of your work or you as a scholar. This process is absolutely bonkers and random. Are you considering re-applying for the 2020 cycle? I think you should. If your letter writers are shocked, it means they expected differently for you, and you’re a strong applicant who has faculty support.
  7. Whenever someone asks me why I like to study the eighteenth-century, I just tell them to read Haywood’s Fantomina, or: Love in a Maze. It’s a perfect example of the bizarre social customs that those in the eighteenth-century followed through and through, even in their most immoral actions. The eighteenth-century was WEIRD, ya’ll. I am convinced someone needs to adapt it for a film or something. It is quite humorous, however it has some dark themes as well. (TW: rape.) In my subfield this is a very common text, so I’m not sure if others have read this, but it was what really got me invested in c18.
  8. Oh, I also realized 20 minutes before my (weirdly early) first deadline that an entire paragraph in my writing sample had “(xx)” for all my page citations, instead of the correct pages. I just went and inserted random numbers...and I got into that program! Lol.
  9. Listed a professor emeritus in one of my faculty paragraphs of my SOP...oops
  10. With what @Warelin said, I think I’ll stop by next year for a bit! Not sure how much advice I can offer in 2020, but hopefully I’ll be a wise ol’ first year grad student and can answer at least some questions. I think I’ll utilitize other areas of this forum during the school year since I can’t text my mentor for every “should I email them this or this?” question, lol. This has been such a great resource! I’ve always heard such bad things about GradCafe, and while the results boards can really make you spiral in your own anxiety, I’ve found the forums have been nothing but positive and helpful. I wonder if other disciplines are also like this? I was poking around and noticed that this section is pretty active compared to others.
  11. Rose Hill is by far the most beautiful campus in NYC! And their department is stacked with such awesome faculty. Congrats!!!!
  12. Schools don’t take your taxes out? Ugh. So as a grad student are you expected to file quarterlies?
  13. No, that's correct! Thank you And @sugilite thanks for that as well. I'll keep that in mind!
  14. Thanks! Can I ask how frequently it's been mentioned? Just curious. Also, congrats on your acceptances + waitlists, both at such amazing programs! You should be really proud of yourself!!
  15. So, I'm feeling a little odd about attending Columbia's students day while still being on the waitlist. Has anyone gone to one of these before? Is your waitlist status frequently brought up? I'm not embarrassed by it, I just wonder if faculty/students will be interested in conversations with me once they find out I'm on the waitlist!
  16. Officially rejected from Yale! I'M FINALLY DONE WITH MY APPLICATION CYCLE OMG.
  17. Just scoured the boards for a solid 15 minutes looking for that one long list of sample questions to ask--can someone help me out and re-post it here? EDIT: Nvm, found it! And if anyone else is looking for it, it's here.
  18. I would’ve done better on my subject test. And probably prepared more for my interviews (went 0 for 2 on those lol). A little more hunkering down on my behalf might have turned some of those rejections into acceptances. I’ll just never know! In all honesty, I do not regret staying true to myself throughout the whole process. When I read the jokes I pepper into my SOP, or the argument of my WS, I really see myself, not only as a scholar, but as a person. My whole application was full of my personality. And I’m really excited to know programs accepted me for, well, me. Idk if we’re putting things we wouldn’t change here as well, but I kinda think we should since it’s good to insert some positivity in these forums.
  19. Lol @ the drama with Brown on the results board. Am I the only one who thinks insulting other people’s online grammar is stupid and a cheap shot? Obviously we all know how to punctuate properly. It’s just so unnecessary to do it online/via text/etc constantly. lawwwwwwd have mercy.
  20. @emprof Thanks so much! I don't think it is common, no, and I agree that it must be a good sign! That's why I'm hoping it goes well.
