Was told I'm on a "semifinalist waitlist" at UV. Anyone holding offers or also on the waitlist, you mind sharing if you intend to accept and what your field is?

Eighteenth-century and I have an offer. I’m currently leaning towards a different program but I can’t say 100% until all my visits are complete, which will be April 4th! I’m trying to make a decision as quickly as I can for the sake of those on the waitlists!

I know my worth, and it's certainly more than what I'm being offered at this point. I really don't know what to do.

I don’t know what you should do either, but I wouldn’t worry about that right this moment. I’d take a week or so to let it all process and come to terms with everything. It’s so amazing you’re recognizing your worth and value! Hold onto that and don’t be swayed by whatever comes in the next few months. The best advice I ever got was: “Goals, not plans.” Your goal is to go to grad school, and how you accomplish that will shift and change as time goes on. I’m sorry again that you’re dealing with this. Feel free to PM me if you need someone to bounce ideas off of or just to vent to!!

I got accepted to the MA program at my alma mater, Duquesne, this morning with no funding offer whatsoever. I'm absolutely devastated. My letter writers are all shocked, and quite frankly, so am I. I can't afford to go back to school without some kind of support. I thought this was finally going to be my chance to get out of a job I can't stand and be able to pursue what I'm passionate about, and all that hope is crushed.

I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this and having to deal with these feelings. It is in no way a reflection of your work or you as a scholar. This process is absolutely bonkers and random. Are you considering re-applying for the 2020 cycle? I think you should. If your letter writers are shocked, it means they expected differently for you, and you’re a strong applicant who has faculty support.

  4. Whenever someone asks me why I like to study the eighteenth-century, I just tell them to read Haywood’s Fantomina, or: Love in a Maze. It’s a perfect example of the bizarre social customs that those in the eighteenth-century followed through and through, even in their most immoral actions. The eighteenth-century was WEIRD, ya’ll. I am convinced someone needs to adapt it for a film or something. It is quite humorous, however it has some dark themes as well. (TW: rape.) In my subfield this is a very common text, so I’m not sure if others have read this, but it was what really got me invested in c18.

  5. With what @Warelin said, I think I’ll stop by next year for a bit! Not sure how much advice I can offer in 2020, but hopefully I’ll be a wise ol’ first year grad student and can answer at least some questions. I think I’ll utilitize other areas of this forum during the school year since I can’t text my mentor for every “should I email them this or this?” question, lol. This has been such a great resource! I’ve always heard such bad things about GradCafe, and while the results boards can really make you spiral in your own anxiety, I’ve found the forums have been nothing but positive and helpful. I wonder if other disciplines are also like this? I was poking around and noticed that this section is pretty active compared to others.

I have an additional question for current students--how do taxes end up working out for you? We hired a tax preparer this year (since in 2018 husband had two jobs and started grad school, we moved states, and I started a business and became a remote employee for my employer back in our old state). It seems like our tax preparer was a bit unfamiliar with the whole grad-student-stipends-are-taxable-income thing and I don't see any mention of it on our return we are currently reviewing. Do you end up owing a lot? I am very concerned for both 2018 and coming years. I was once an AmeriCorps VISTA and the fact that taxes aren't taken out of your paycheck becomes awful with the amount you end up owing during tax season. I fear that this situation is going to be similar.

Schools don’t take your taxes out? Ugh. So as a grad student are you expected to file quarterlies?

Thank you! And you too! ? I do feel proud of this, even if in the end I don’t make it off any of the waitlists; it’s been a long, arduous journey, as I’m sure it has been for you too. As for your question, assuming you mean how much have the program preferences of the accepted students been mentioned, the answer is that I’m actually here alone. JH wasn’t able to accommodate me at their official visit, so they set me up with a solo experience, as it were (which was *super* nice of them). So I can’t be of much help on that front, sorry. Or did I misunderstand your question...?

No, that's correct! Thank you :)

And @sugilite thanks for that as well. I'll keep that in mind!

I’m currently visiting JH on my own, and Chapel Hill invited me to attend their campus visit as a waitlisted. I wouldn’t feel odd about it. At least some of those students are most likely leaning towards another school anyways, and my experience with the faculty at JH has so far been only positive.

Thanks! Can I ask how frequently it's been mentioned? Just curious.

Also, congrats on your acceptances + waitlists, both at such amazing programs! You should be really proud of yourself!!

  9. I would’ve done better on my subject test. And probably prepared more for my interviews (went 0 for 2 on those lol). A little more hunkering down on my behalf might have turned some of those rejections into acceptances. I’ll just never know!

In all honesty, I do not regret staying true to myself throughout the whole process. When I read the jokes I pepper into my SOP, or the argument of my WS, I really see myself, not only as a scholar, but as a person. My whole application was full of my personality. And I’m really excited to know programs accepted me for, well, me. Idk if we’re putting things we wouldn’t change here as well, but I kinda think we should since it’s good to insert some positivity in these forums.
