I also want to pipe in on the holiday break. I'm a current program student and I can tell you my advisor(s) started emailing me back today, late afternoon - for things that I emailed over the break and ongoing things that need some pretty urgent attention. They are JUST getting back to their computers and have to play catch up with the 12 000 emails they missed and get their bearings. Likely admission committees will be coming together soon - but often the actual POI you are hoping reads your application and reaches out to you doesn't even know your application exists yet. It has nothing to do with your application, they just aren't there yet. Give it some time. Then the whole fiasco with omicron and lots of schools have shifted online, some activities had to apply for exemptions for in-person, last-minute faculty meetings to figure it out. It's a mess. It will take a hit on delaying everything. I truly do get how anxiety-inducing this waiting limbo season is - I don't anything has remotely compared to how anxious I felt this time last year, but I hope this helps at least one person even feel a little better.

    School: York (Clinical-Developmental Psychology Program)
    Date of invite: January 5
Date of interview: TBD, some time the week of the 24th (with POI: JW), January 28 (open house)
It was a direct email for the POI and they said more details would come about the open house. I suspect invites will be coming out on a rolling basis from now until the 28th for York so there's still lots of time if you haven't got one yet!
I also received an interview invite for the Developmental Psychology program at Queens just after Christmas (POI: EK) - not directly relevant to this forum but it may be helpful for others who applied to that program.
I tried to share as much information as I could so hopefully this helps! Good luck everyone!

Bro I KNOW omg it's stressing me out... the forum + the results page isn't nearly as active as it was last year hahaha. I've noticed this thread has really picked up in activity this week though, understandably so!

Congratulations! Nice to see a York interview to get an idea of when they're reaching out. I get the sense many people don't post updates on the results page..

While I did email everyone I applied to, not everyone responded to me. Additionally, many sent very generic responses back so my email likely had no impact at all anyways. Profs are busy and some profs don't like to exchange emails because they feel it's unfair to the admission process more generally.
In the past, I've gotten interviews from professors that haven't responded to my emails or have sent very generic responses to me. Additionally, I've gotten responses from professors who never ended up contacting me for an interview. Putting too much emphasis on initial emails is really not worth the stress.
I do think it's a good idea to email in advance just to be sure that they are in fact accepting students (sometimes the website doesn't tell the full story) but otherwise it's certainly not going to ruin your application. I really wouldn't stress about it at this point.

*TIP: When a job is listed on the HR website, it’s usually too late!! Employers often want someone quickly, and HR takes months to list positions. Usually they have someone in mind and have interviewed prior to even listing the role.

**TIP: Reach out to potential employers! Research assistant roles have high turnover (1-3 years) because employees go off to school. The beginning of the summer (or a little before) is when employers will often start looking for new staff. If you keep reaching out, you’re bound to find someone looking for a new team member.

I applied to York last year and am applying again this year. I looked earlier this month and saw December 1st too and then noticed this change last week. You can always contact the admissions department and verify but I do plan to submit my supplementary documents by the 15th and not 1st.
In the past the deadline has always been December 15th. I think the fact that you need to submit the payment/create an application through their application portal was confusing for people in the past (ie. they would submit the initial application not realizing they wouldn't get access to the documents portal for several days resulting in late applications). I think this change is their way of clarifying this distinction (although changing the wording partway through November still makes things confusing lol).
If you haven't paid the fee yet, I would definitely do that right now because it takes a few days to receive confirmation and access to the portal to actually upload your documents (similar to many other Ontario schools).

I did this last year and was accepted into one and not the other. In my interview for the program I was accepted, I was asked where else I had applied and what programs. When I stated the other program within the same school I was asked why. My answer was simply that I realize there are multiple pathways to achieving the same end goal and that I felt both programs shared a lot of overlap and both offered what I needed to pursue my interests. I was admitted to the one that I answered this into, so just be truthful - there really is a lot of overlap in different programs with the same opportunities to pursue your research.

I'm heading into my second gap year so I can speak a bit from previous experience with finding a job last year.
I didn't actually get a paid RA opportunity until August. I suspect that this was partly due to uncertainty around covid but mainly due to the fact that their previous RAs were going back to school in September so positions had opened up. I had checked Indeed daily for RA positions in the spring and didn't see many open up until early summer.
Also, I'm not sure how broad you're being with your interests, but if you can, I'd recommend being open to research that you might not have considered. I'm really interested in ASD but have been a paid RA in a lab looking to help caregivers of brain injury survivors. It's definitely a different area but the research skills I've gained a valuable regardless of the topic. If you can get something in your primary area of interest, of course DO IT because it would definitely be more helpful/exciting for you, but if you can't find something be open to get research experience in psychology more broadly.
I also heard from a friend that a person in their lab got a RA job even though they lived in a different province and is working completely remote. This might change as covid restrictions ease but there might be some remote opportunities that you aren't even aware of. It doesn't hurt to try!
Good luck! Trying to make the most of a gap year is hard when there aren't many opportunities available. Try not to be too hard on yourself! You can only do so much!

This is great advice! I will also add that during my gap years I sought paid RA work by scanning the jobs posted in research hospital's websites. For instance in the Toronto area this meant looking through Baycrest, CAMH, Unity Health, UHN, Sunnybrook etc. webpages. Often things come up on their site that do not come up on Indeed. However, ultimately I got my RA jobs through word of mouth. As an example, I interviewed for an RA job at a major hospital but was not offered the position. The PI I interviewed with liked me though and referred me to a colleague who hired me in their lab at the same hospital. Utilize your prof/volunteer recourses and let them know your'e looking for RA work! They may know someone in your area of interest. Good luck!
