I emailed admissions to ask if interviews are still being sent out and, if so, whether there is a deadline for sending out invites.

I was told that they are still sending out invitations this week and that interview day will take place on Feb. 26th. Hope this helps! :)

Hi, are you aware if this for clinical or clinical-developmental or both?

    Thank you for asking! :)

Does anyone know how many people have been accepted to Ryerson so far?

I would also be interested in knowing this. It sounds like offers have gone out yesterday and today. It's unclear if more will be going out tomorrow, or if they are done reaching out to their top selected candidates.

Question: How long after the interview is it appropriate to follow up with the person who interviewed you (my PI)? The wait is killing me and I think I recked my chances at the interview. So I really don't want to wait. But I also don't want to look bad by asking too soon. The turnover is supposed to be quick. I know they would have made their final decisions by now, but students don't hear back till much after because there heads have to sign off.

How long has it been since your interview?

Honestly didn't occur to me ??‍♀️ If anything I would assume I'd be bugging them and I'm not sure it would have any impact on their decision anyways.

I wholeheartedly recommended sending thank you notes. I've heard that it does matter to some people and I can assure you it would not be perceived as bothering them.

Hi everyone! I just found this website and thought I'd ask, for those attending Ryerson's visiting day, did anyone's prospective supervisors give them an idea of the timeline from this point on? I noticed in past years decisions appeared to be made around mid-Feb., although I believe in those years interviews would've all taken place during visiting day itself so I'm wondering if the timeline will look different this year. If anyone has any info, please let me know! (feel free to PM if you'd prefer :))

That's a good question! I wonder if it will be quicker this year because (most) interviews have been conducted. If anyone has any insight on this it would be much appreciated!

Hi everyone, bit of a strange question but...

Is it "unaccepted" to reach out to new POIs from a program that you have already been interviewed with (with a different POI). For example, if you became more interested in a different POI during the interview stage, would it be disadvantageous to reach out to this POI?

I think if you generally want to let them know you enjoyed talking with them and are interested in their research, then that's great! Programs like to see that prospective applicants will get along with many  faculty members and not just  their PI. You will have committee members, practicum supervisors, etc that you will be developing relationships with throughout your degree. So, I think showing that interest would demonstrate your overall excitement and interest in the program.

If however, you want to inquire about switching which POI you would like as your primary supervisor and you have already gone through formal interviews, I would advise against this. Like I mentioned, if you are admitted you may have opportunities to collaborate with this faculty member in some fashion. I have not heard of anyone doing this and I think it may come off unfocused and unprofessional. Not to mention your primary POI might feel shafted (even if the other faculty member has overlapping interests). You could inquire about the possibility of co-supervision, but I would only personally inquire about this if and when I received an official offer.

Regarding Ryerson Visiting Day, I guess my question is if in the past interviews would have taken place on this day but this year POIs had their interviews prior to Visiting Day, then how does Visiting Day change the POIs decision on who to make an offer to? Is it possible they have already identified their top choice(s) but just invited multiple people to the Visiting Day in case their top choice rejects the offer?

Good question. After visiting day, it is unclear how decisions are made. From what I know, visiting day has no bearing on admissions decisions. It is like an orientation of the program, etc. After all interviews have been conducted, I think (but I'm not 100% sure) it's a committee decision with POI's input weighted heavily. At this point faculty priority would come into play, such as who has first pick at taking on a student. And yes, I think the short-lists are incase top selected applicants decline their offers.

This does help, thank you! I'm just a bit confused, is their process informal interview -> clinical interview -> visiting day where they are narrowing down each time (so then, for example, not having an informal interview would mean you couldn't end up on the shortlist)? And do you know if everyone who had a clinical interview go to visiting day?

That one I'm not 100% sure of. This year's process is much different than last year's - last year you would have an informal interview, then formal invite to visiting day where you'd have a clinical interview, lab interview, and POI interview.

This time it seems like it's your informal, then the clinical, and then you get an invite to visiting day? Honestly it's all very different so... uncharted territory haha

This is what it sounds like is happening this year. Although, profs are on their own timelines for scheduling prelims, and even the secondary interviews are happening at different times. That being said, it seems like they want all interviews be finished before the visiting day.

From what I can tell, POI's had a semi-short list of applicants that they conducted prelims with, a subset of those applicants made it to the clinical interviews, but the clinical interviews are not used to determine whether you will get an invite to the visiting day. It seems that was up to the POI (unless there are some major red flags that are revealed in the clinical interview–which is probably rare). The clinical interview was also conducted to assess fit with the program, and it sounds like applicants had very different experiences for their secondary interviews (some unstructured, some very clinical oriented with many questions).

Lastly, I have heard that in previous years some profs don't participate in the "visiting day", and I am not sure if this is still the case or where to find out that information regarding your prospective POI, or how that would change the timeline.

Is it strange/rude to ask your supervisor for a paid RA position for the summer if you’re an incoming graduate student (with that supervisor)? Like if you and the supervisor agreed to get started on research prior to graduate school officially starting.

Is this for your thesis or for other research going on in the lab? It is very common for MA/PhD students to be paid as a Graduate Research Assistant by their POI's to work on projects outside of their thesis/dissertation/comps, especially if the POI holds a grant/funding.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to ask to speak with them about the possibility to be paid over the summer as a GA if it's non-thesis research. If this POI wants to get started on research pertaining to your thesis early, then that's a little different and I would suspect that would be up to you whether you want to begin your masters thesis work early without funding.

I'm not assuming this is the case because I am not aware of all the details, but I would be weary of a POI who would expect me to work for free at a graduate level on research for a few months prior to starting my degree and having funding available. Just my opinion!

Anyone know if all the McMaster interviews have been sent out? also has anyone heard back from Western’s clinical?

I think McMaster's prelims were conducted throughout January and top selected applicants received an official interview offer via email on Sunday.

York is always late (I think I heard on January 30 last year), and since they received so many applications this year I wouldn't be surprised if they're even later. I know of one prof who is going to interview two potential grad students in the next two weeks. (I'm a current York student.)

Thank you for the info. If anyone has been contacted by York for a prelim, could you pm if you're comfortable?

What mentors are doing research in Borderline Personality Disorder (in Canada)? Any suggestions for which universities to apply to, if that is my main research interest? How is funding for Canadian universities?

@VanessaB provided some great mentors to check out!

I'll add, I'm not sure if you are an international student, but I would also inquire as to whether any of these programs are/will accept international students. Sometimes it is outlined on the program website and sometimes it isn't. Due to (I think covid?) many schools this year aren't considering international students. I wish this was more clear, because I think it's still possible to submit and pay for an application as an international student, even though they won't consider your application. Something to consider if you plan on applying in the fall!

    Good luck :)
