Just a quick reminder: There are programs that are just beginning the process of reviewing applications. I imagine some have not begun yet. Practice self-care during this stressful time. Do things you enjoy (to the best of your ability). Flesh out your Plan B. Many of us needed multiple cycles of applications to finally get into programs. I needed 3. Your timeline is your own. Despite how it feels, you are not in competition. Be well and good luck!

I agree with this. I also wanted to say; be KIND to yourself and others in this process. We're going through this in a global pandemic and we are resilient enough to even apply for these programs. Its my first cycle and I cannot stress how obsessive and self-sabotaging I have become and I am sure you guys can relate. I'm just being mindful of my own emotions and praying for the best out of this hell of a situation. Our time will come :)

ugh yall.... we still have time to hear back from schools right ? should i lose hope yet or no

I FEEL this! I have not heard back from a single school yet. I applied to schools primarily on the east coast and have assumed rejection from 3. I have a tiny light of hope on the remaining schools that have not sent out interview invites yet. We got this!! I can't help but feel super sad but lets hang on!

Usually they have an address on their website that you will need to send the transcripts too (most of the time it is the graduate office at the school, but sometimes not). You will have to reach out to your undergrad and request that they send the transcript to that address. Some schools have an electronic system in place (such as Parchment) that you can use which is much faster than having your undergrad mail a physical copy. I would look at your undergrad's website for requesting and sending transcripts and see which options they provide.

Thank you! I went to a community college which my credits transferred to at my undergrad institution, It's a mess sending two transcripts to every school :(

  4. Someone please help solve my confusion. For applications that use PSYCAS, we don't have to mail schools our transcripts right because PSYCAS sends them? For schools who do not use PSYCAS, the ones that have their own application systems, how do we send the official transcripts? I notice that they ask to upload unofficial ones on the application but I'm guessing they also require the official ones sent.... Sorry this might be a no brainer question but this whole process is so overwhelming!!

Hi all! Nervous and freaking out first timer applying to Clinical Psych PhD programs here ! :D

I was wondering how is everyone reaching out to their PIs for Fall 2021 admissions? Like, what do you say in the email and how do you get them to respond to you? It seems so scary to reach out of the blue...

I would really appreciate any advice y'all may have. Thank you!!

I agree this is scary. I've been on the fence about it myself. I have emailed a few and briefly introduced myself, my research interests and what I do in a clinical manner. I make it short and sweet, some PI's appreciate this and some don't, it really depends. Don't be bummed out if they don't answer because they must be getting 1000 emails. ALSO, something my advisor had told me: the communication you have with the PI could tell you if you would like to work with them or not. If the response is cold, that should tell you something about their mentorship style as well...

Now that we're getting closer to applications, how many programs are y'all applying to? My expectation is in the 10-12 range, although could go as high as 15. I'm worried about applying to fewer because of competitiveness. I would love to walk out of this cycle with an offer (who doesn't???), but if not, at least a few interviews.

I currently have a list of around 8 that I am highly interested in. I suppose I should look for more due to competitive nature of these programs.

I'm not sure if you know this year, but GREs are being omitted (or optional) for many psychology graduate programs this cycle. So if you plan on applying this year, I would focus your efforts on your personal statement and the rest of your application.

Hope that helps with your stress... maybe you can get into a graduate program without reading a single reading comprehension passage ?

I appreciate your support!! Yes I am aware but the programs I have my eye on (NY-based) havent yet said anything about the GRE's besides CUNY. Waiting on them!!

Is your 3.9 for your BA or MA? Because 3.9 undergrad GPA can put you in the top 20 programs across the types of psychology for sure!

Both! It was a combined degree program.

  9. Does already having a MA in psychology look better than low GRE scores? Just wondering, I never had to take the GRE and I graduated with a BA and MA due to my GPA and work with professors. I have a 3.9 GPA overall. I'm not being pessimistic but I know my scores won't be competitive enough. Any thoughts??

  10. GRE prepping is going terrible so far, I only plan on taking it once and having hope that other factors of my application will prevail. I haven't started writing my personal statements yet but I do have an idea of what it will entail. Has anyone else's mental health been going down the drain this cycle? Yes, its early but I feel so overwhelmed by the whole pandemic and the stress of school!!!

TONS of schools are waiving the GRE this cycle. I’m not even going to submit my scores. Try not to be too nervous about it, because I’ve seen programs accept students that score on the lower side. It’s all about fit, personal statement, and research experience. Good luck though ♥️

This made me feel so much better!!!
