  1. Stupid question: can anyone tell me how to access your "inbox" on here. I got a notification that one of y'all sent me a private message (had no idea about this feature) but I can't seem to find my inbox anywhere ?

Josh did say it could also be early next week (which, I hope, means Monday!) And I just looked up in the results, acceptances tend to be phone calls! So no need to refresh your inbox, just make sure you're staring at your phone screen all day ?

Roger that: My phone is surgically attached to my hand. I’m hoping that the poetry acceptance bodes well for us hearing back today. I just keep telling myself that in all likelihood, the decision has already been made, our fates are sealed etc etc

I interviewed with him on Tuesday! I think he is probably doing all of them since he seemed to have some pretty extensive slots available? I hope yours went well! I'm curious how many he's interviewing and how many they're taking on. BK is my top choice and I'm a lil anxious.

Same here!!! I interviewed Wednesday and it was short and professional — truly nothing to write home about. At least he said they would try to notify us by the end of the weekend. Here’s hoping we see each other in Brooklyn next fall! ??

  4. Has anyone who’s interviewed for MFA programs share their insights? I know there’s some totally obvious question I’m going to be unprepared for. (For me I always get stuck on, “what questions did you have for us?”)

Anyone waitlisted at their dream program and imploding?

So much initial joy now so much MORE anxiety. *screams silently*

This. The very first news I received was a waitlist to WashU. Since then I’ve been rejected from Michigan and Syracuse, but WashU was always where I wanted to be. Hard to get my hopes up when there are only four slots for fiction this year (some of y’all better get into Iowa) but also I can’t stop looking at apartments in St. Louis

have there been any more calls for nyu fiction or do we think they were all that one day last week???

I also came here to ask this!! the first story in my fiction manuscript is set at NYU which might have been a huge fo paux.

I have been wondering how the pandemic would impact applicant volume for MFA programs. About six months ago, I imagined it could go either one of two ways: 1) less applicants than usual (due to a renewed focus on more lucrative professions and programs and a consequent move away from the fine arts); 2) more applicants than usual (due to everyone having had so much more time in lockdown to think about the future, while feeling the very real and everyday existential threat of COVID. In this instance, more applicants would decide to apply because of some combination of "if not now, when?" and "why not?") Now, as I hear stories like this from Maryland and others like FSU, I am starting to think that it's a third version that I didn't consider at all: 3) way more applicants than usual (due to a swing towards the arts, the way there can be in times of great uncertainty and existentialism.) While I LOVE this and what it says about the arts as tonic in times of hardship, it makes me think that this "record breaking numbers" trend is something we'll see across the board. Anyway, I've been so curious about all this and seeing how it would impact the MFA applicant pool. If anyone wants to push back or discuss, let me know :)

My conspiracy theory is that many programs allowed students to defer for the first time in 2020 due to covid and classes not meeting in person. So in addition to an influx of applicants due to trends around people applying to grad school when the economy is tanking, plus all the leisure time many people had for applications due to being out of work, we are also up against admitted students from 2020 who may have chosen to defer.

Anyone apply to Columbia? If so, just wondering what you thought about the response piece for the app. I applied to 11 schools and Columbia was the only school that requested this additional piece of writing apart from the writing submission. Just wondering how important it is.

Hiii! I applied to Columbia — I actually had a lot of fun with the literary response essay. I wrote about my favorite contemporary collection, The Babysitter at Rest (a beautiful book out of the Dorothy project at WashU). I wanted to pick something relevant to my work that was enough of a “deep cut” while still being something the admissions committee could have theoretically read. That writer, Jen George adjuncted at Columbia for a semester so it seemed a natural choice. What did you write about??

by the way — does anyone have any idea when Columbia notifies? It’s among my top choices, even though the funding it notoriously bad.

  9. Does anyone have any idea when Columbia might be sending out responses? Their deadline is later than others, but it’s also a bigger program than most. Otherwise I’m still waiting to hear from Brooklyn College, Michigan, NYU, Syracuse and Brown.

  10. Hey y’all. I don’t know if there are other CUNY applicants up in here, but I called Brooklyn College today to deal with a clerical issue (my application was listed as not complete due to some community college courses I took in high school.) The woman at admissions was very kind but she told me that answers might not go out for another SIX WEEKS. thought this would be useful to anyone chomping at the bit to hear back.
