2nd (or more) Time Applicants - What's Your Feeling This Year?
sansao replied to sansao's topic in Waiting it Out
Recruitment event this weekend, so that's exciting. In total, 5 programs are talking to me, out of the 7 to which I applied. This is a far different story from last year when I went 0/6, so that alone is enough to keep me hopeful. But also, the tone of conversations has been much more geared at asking about my interests and project preferences. I also haven't got any rejections yet, which kinda surprises me. I will still feel much, much better when/if I have an acceptance. Then I'll be able to relax and decide where to go with something more logical than "whoever takes me." -
This weekend I have two days of recruitment events. Yeah, I'm a ball of nerves right now.

Lame. Hope you get some good news to balance it out.

Possibly the best post ever.

Idk, I kinda appreciate the sentiment. Certainly it's better than something like, "wow, that sucks, it would have been so awesome for you to move there. But you can come visit us, since we're moving there without you." Yes? -

By "excellent study buddies," are you referring to them sleeping on your open book so you don't have to read, or walking on your keyboard, so you don't have to type (or, if you have already typed, standing on the delete key for 10 minutes)?

Congratulations! I know if/when I get mine, I'm going to get absolutely trashed and then do something financially reckless, just not sure what yet. Lol.

Last year, I got an email from the department, the graduate college, a letter from each, and a phone call with a FIVE-MINUTE voicemail from the POI outlining the reasons for my rejection (asking me at the end to please call back and discuss further). At first, I was completely filled with hate (), but I did call, and they gave me some advice about presentation that may have helped with my much more positive experience this year. I didn't change much informational content, but I did reduce verbosity. I cut my statement from 1.5 pages to less than one, and poof: 3 interviews, a recruitment event, and two other schools with funding-contingent endorsements by my POIs (out of 7, I've heard back from 5, all positive, but nothing formal).

Is it just since you got the admit? That's kinda what I'm anticipating, not becoming completely apathetic, but bein far more relaxed about the process and outcome. I'm more relaxed already since I got a recruitment invite.

I would plan as though this were an interview. Be ready to answer questions and have some of your own ready. Good luck! -

Recommendation from Dept., does that mean I am in?

I would guess that you should be fine at this point, and that they just need to verify your file and process your offer. -

Of all the things to distract me, I don't think I'll watch the Superbowl. I have zero interest in pro football. I will keep my fingers crossed that we all get good news, though.
