cupidcello
Hi all! Three cheers for December 1st, everyone! I've been waiting for today as 2/3 schools I've applied to have a due date of today (the last one is Jan 1st). I suppose I'm also waiting for December 2nd as I understand that several schools have different time deadlines on the 1st (i.e. midnight, 17:00, 23:59 etc.). I'm also waiting for just one more recommendation letter to one school (That school's portal was down when they were ready to submit. Sigh. One would imagine that this wouldn't happen during such an important time.). Anyway, I might post tomorrow to cheer everyone again. Hope everyone is hanging in there alright! I'm actually working on some thank-you notes at the moment. 'Tis the season to be thankful, right?

I am also applying to Michigan and I did not see anywhere on the application to upload unofficial GRE score reports either. I think that may only apply to applicants who had to take the Psychology GRE Subject Test. If you look here: https://lsa.umich.edu/psych/prospective-students/graduate/application-procedures.html and scroll down to GRE, then "Clinical Science Area", it says: GRE Subject Test: You will be asked to submit your overall score and percentile rank and upload a PDF copy of your score report into the application. If you do not have your score when you submit your application, please email your score report, your name, and UMID number to psych.saa@umich.edu on or before December 1st. This applies to the subject test ONLY. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for clarifying this! I am relieved now. I got some questions about what next: 1. Does anyone know when you start hearing about the decision? I am referring to the...bad news...rejections. This is my first time so Idk much yet but some of my friends who are applying for the 2nd or 3rd time said that some schools announced the rejection in a week or two. (I am assuming via application status?) 2. How common are waitlists in psych phds? The only school I know for sure does it is U Minnesota.

I've seen that some programs send out invites as early as December and others sending out invites closer to the end of February/beginning of March. I am assuming that formal rejections would go out closer to March and April, once offers are made and accepted. 2. Not entirely sure about this, I don't think programs openly advertise this information. You can look at the grad cafe result page to see if people have been waitlisted for the programs you applied to. I hope this helps!

justacigar
Did anyone here apply to UMN's developmental psychopathology and clinical science program? I recently found out they don't even conduct interviews before acceptance/rejection! For some reason that makes me even more nervous? Like you don't have a chance to prove yourself in an interview, its all just on paper. Yikes!

Like you don't have a chance to prove yourself in an interview, its all just on paper. Yikes! I did apply to UMN but to their development psychology program. I did have in-depth correspondence with 3 of the faculty I listed in my application. Two of them did emphasize how they do their application process very differently at UMN's Institute of Child Development. They emphasized the community-based model that the department takes, and your application is reviewed by the entire faculty, not just the faculty who you indicated. They highlighted that students are admitted to the department, and the faculty as a whole decide who to admit. Apparently, in the first year, you have the opportunity to "shop around" the different labs and get a better sense of which lab is better fit for your research interests. I can see how not factoring an interview in the admission process can be concerning, but I also wonder if it's related to how their program is structured. They possibly just review the materials in the application to ensure that every applicant are being compared on the same materials. Since the faculty as a whole decides who to let in, then individual interviews with individual faculty members may not hold a lot of weight. But then again, this kind of begs the question of why not have an interview weekend with the whole department before sending out offers... might be related to funding, not sure.. I did have a phone conversation with one of the faculty there, though we didn't have time to talk about admissions which is a bummer. I also know that program is going to be uber competitive. Just nervous having to wait for acceptance or rejection for another month or two lol
wildmonkey
Out of curiosity, I wonder what % of applicants get an informal Skype interview. And out of those, what % wind up getting a formal invite. I'm sure it depends on the program and POI, but just curious what the approximate average is. fake187
Someone just posted a skype interview with Notre Dame, and they mentioned that there wouldn't be in-person interviews. Do you know if this is only for Dev Psych applicants, or do you think it would also apply to cog psych applicants?
