GEM Fellowship 2021

Hi, a GEM rep at a university I'm hoping to attend reached out saying I'm eligible for the GEM fellowship program. Is this usually an indication that I'll receive an associate or university fellowship? I've been accepted into the school.

Can anyone help me get into contact with the rep at USC? I haven't heard anything from them at all this whole time. And definitely not anything about a waiver. I've emailed about 5 times now. The viterbi admissions office doesn't accept phone calls. Is KH the rep or am I reaching out to the wrong person? ?

Hey guys. I am honestly confused by this whole process. I am currently in the final round of interviewing with a company and I am confused on the process of getting selected as a GEM Full fellow. If this company chooses to sponsor me do I notify the University I got accepted to (and want to go to) and tell them a company is sponsoring me and if they will take me on as a Full Fellow? Or as soon as the company gives me an offer they contact the Universities I apply to and tell them they are sponsoring me and the school can decide from there if they will sponsor me? Basically what I am asking is am I supposed to be doing the leg work, the company, or GEM?

Sorry, I got more insight. So I am in a different situation. I was accepted Fall 2020, but deferred due to the pandemic. Since I deferred, I believe I was put in a pool of accepted students who deferred that had to sign by March 3. I think if you applied for Fall 2021 originally, you should be fine.

Kevin Henry is the rep that I have been in contact with. Sorry if my post caused some anxiousness. I am a different case of accepted students. I had accept by march 3rd to continue. If you applied for Fall 2021 originally, you should be fine.

Its a good sign, but I wouldnt take it as a definite yes yet. I received a similar email from a school I was accepted to and I contacted the GEM rep and they told me that the school's internal committee has not made a decision yet. I am taking that as a they acknowledge that you applied to GEM and acknowledge GEM has determined you are eligible to receive it. Good luck to you!

Tbh, this whole process is a bit confusing. However, I will explain my understanding of GEM. If you get the internship AND if one the school you applied too awards you GEM, then you will be considered as a Full Fellow. But most of the weight is dependent on the school. The requirement to be a GEM Scholar overall is that a school has to accept you as a scholar, doesnt matter if you got the internship. That being said, it is good practice to let the school you want to attend know that a company wants to sponsor you as a GEM scholar, it can help nudge them to also accepting you as scholar. I do not believe the company will contact the school, so you will have to the leg work. Best of luck!

One of the GEM Universities I applied to informed me that even though I have the internship and company sponsorship, they don't have any money to cover the additional funds GEM requires so my application will probably get denied and I just ?

Now I am really confused how this fellowship works

I am so sorry to hear that. If I was you I would reach out to other Universities you got accepted to and tell them you have an employer sponsor and if they would be willing to sponsor you as a full fellow. This process is definitely confusing.

Hi! I’ve accepted an internship offer, but I have yet to confirm university support despite be admitted into GEM member schools already.

Should I apply to more schools?

Apparently I am on matched again... no clue when this happened cause I threw in the employer towel a while ago. Maybe there is hope for a summer internship ?

Anyone else who was previously told they were not going to get an employer, now suddenly matched?

I got general admissions acceptances from University of Michigan, NYU Tandon, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech (fully-funded, no mention of GEM at the time), Northeastern, Stony Brook. 

I later got GEM University Fellowships from: NYU Tandon and Northeastern

Then GEM Associate from: Virginia Tech.

Congratulations on the acceptances.

I’ve had general admission from NYU Tandon for sometime now, but no word on whether they will admit me as a GEM fellow or any updates in eGEM.
 

Hopefully they’ll come soon for me.

Hi! No, nothing from NYU ? They offered me a $10k scholarship in my offer letter but didn't mention GEM at all. I also got a GEM offer from a different university but it hasn't changed anything in my eGEM portal haha.

Yeah the employer thing is kind of weird, after an employer contacted me but then released me, I was eventually put on "Matched" again. I then got the email that I wasn't going to get an employer, but I'm still on "Matched" in the portal. So not sure what it means but at this point I've just assumed I'm not getting an employer.

Same here for NYU! My offer is like that too.

So, I’ve been in contact with the rep. She said we won’t hear until mid-April.

Has anyone heard from the University of Michigan? I was admitted to their program, but their GEM rep is waiting to hear if they have award slots for GEM Fellows. Just curious because it is my first choice school.

Hi! I have an offer from UM for my MS ECE. I'm so sorry that I'm taking so long to make a decision, but I was also accepted to Stanford's MS EE and CMU's MS ECE and I'm waiting to hear from them if they'll fund my GEM Fellowship.

I feel so bad holding this up for you and/or others, so I will let them know as soon as things are figured out. Unfortunately Stanford's GEM rep has been slow to respond, but they should hopefully be getting back to me with a decision soon. Congrats and I hope things work out for both of us! :-)

Has anyone had any contact with "National Renewable Energy Laboratory"? I am on held and wondering when or if I will be contacted by them or what I can do to reach out further. Any ideas what their process is?

For those of you that have officially been accepted by an employer what does your portal say under “employer member status”? I have received an offer from an employer that I have accepted  but for some reason my portal still says “matched”. I contacted GEM and they said that is something they cannot update but only the employer can. My employer is a GEM sponsor but it’s weird because they don’t extend the offer through the GEM portal but externally so that is why the portal isn’t updating. Any of you guys receive GEM employer offers outside the portal and if so how did you get your status changed to show the employer?

I had a similar experience. I received an offer from an employer who made me submit an internship application through their website. After that whole process, my GEM portal was updated about two weeks later and I received a form to sign, which I believe was the GEM contract. The employer mentioned that this method makes their administrative work much simpler, so I wouldn't worry if I were you.

Hey! So I've accepted a GEM internship offer already, but have received no offers from a GEM university. I have a partial funding offer from a non-GEM university I've been accepted to, but the deadline to accept is April 15. At what point should I probably assume I'm not going to receive a GEM offer? This whole thing has me so confused and stressed!
