1996kayden Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 From a clinical prof at the University of Virginia: "If you're considering applying to the clinical psychology program at @UVAPsyc this year, please note that our program may not recruit a class for the 2021-2022 academic year. Please check back on the program website in October before you apply. https://psychology.as.virginia.edu/research-areas/clinical-psychology " From the department (twitter account): "To all potential applicants: please reach out to individual PIs before applying! @UVAPsyc will be recruiting at the graduate level, but due to COVID-19, not all labs/specializations will be admitting graduate students"
justacigar Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Man, I am getting increasingly more nervous as the year drags on waiting to see if any of the programs I'm interested in are not taking students. So far, I haven't heard that about any of the programs on my list but it seems like more and more are deciding to not take a cohort. Big yikes PsychApplicant2 1

So sad I know it's very discouraging, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. However, thankfully it seems to only be a few programs so I think we should try to stay optimistic!

La Cosmopolitan Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 From Loyola Chicago: "As is the case at many other schools, Loyola University Chicago is expecting an unprecedented financial deficit this Fall due to COVID-19 and the resulting enrollment drop in undergraduate freshmen. As such, our Provost has asked all PhD programs not to admit any new graduate students for Fall, 2021. Our Provost has re-assured all of us that our enrollments can go "back to normal" for Fall, 2022 and that we can take in a new class for Fall 2022. The Provost also informed us that there will be no reductions in stipends for any current or incoming students and no reductions in faculty. We are sorry that we will not be taking new students for Fall, 2021; please consider applying for Fall, 2022 if you do not enter a program in Fall, 2021. Good luck to you!"
PsychApplicant2 Posted September 17, 2020 Author Posted September 17, 2020 UPenn’s entire school for arts and sciences just announced that they are not taking any school-funded PhD students for the 2021-2022 academic year. Does anyone know if this includes their clinical program?

Yeah, my mentor even brought up the idea of not expending energy on applications this cycle and waiting until next year, especially if the trend continues and more of the programs I'm interested in decide to not take students. I just can't imagine not trying at all this year. What are other people thinking of doing because of the uncertainty?
ColoradoGirl94 Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 I have reached out to potential mentors for all of the schools I am applying to and have been able to start applications for all of the schools. I think it sounds worse than it seems. I mean there is the off chance that after submitting my application a program will decide not to take students, but most potential mentors I've talked to seem pretty confident they have/the school has funds to support a student. I have noticed that many will only take one student which will make it significantly more competitive, but I am at a crossroad right now and I need to at least try! I think it's worth reaching out to the program/mentor now that fall semester has started and just confirm that they are taking clinical students. I am not losing hope!

Personally, I think it's worth giving it a shot, especially if some of your PI's of interest have confirmed that they will be taking new students. I still have 15-20 schools I'm whittling down, and none of those have said they're closing apps for the cycle. Honestly, I feel like clinical programs outright barring new admissions for this cycle are in the minority. And who knows where things will be this time next year! I wouldn't want to rely on things being a total 180 in that regard.

I’ve personally seen a lot of PI’s say on twitter that they’re taking students this cycle, so I think you’re fine to apply!! Keep checking the program websites for updates.

It definitely seems to be the minority not accepting students rather than the majority. It is in these programs interests to keep the admissions open (remember they get money from application fees etc).

EileanDonan Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 UPenn's clinical program doesn't actually say anything about not accepting students (rather to the contrary): link. I think the announcement made by the Arts & Sciences isn't necessarily overarching, as UPenn's physics program also just announced they'll be accepting anyway. Make of that what you will? ?
