WHAT does "POI" stand for? I just always say "PI," as in "principal investigator." I've googled. I've lurked. I'm out of ideas. Here are a few I have:

Primary Opium Introducer

Pithy Orangutan Instigator

Perching Orange Intimidator

Person Oppressing Imagination

Pathological Optimism Incinerator

Professor of Interest (<---- that's actually a legitimate guess)

Don't judge me. Maybe somebody else out there has this question too.

Thank the Lord for anonymous forums.

When I write "POI" I mean "Person of Interest" - not sure about other forumers :P

I guess sometimes once you get into a program your Person of Interest may transform into Person Oppressing Imagination :D

OMG, I love you for asking this. I thought I was the only one who was wondering this.

You were not alone, I also had no idea! I thought it was just a variation of Principal Investigator and ignored it.

I've always regarded it as Mojingly's guess..Professor of Interest.

For a while i thought it was program of interest also..

Well, according to Wikipedia:

"Person of interest" is a phrase used by law enforcement when announcing the name of someone involved in a criminal investigation who has not been arrested or formally accused of a crime. The phrase was adopted by the media and widely disseminated, thus most law enforcement agencies have picked up the term. It has no legal meaning, but it is a "catchy" term. It is often used as a euphemism for suspect, and can sometimes result in a trial by media

So pretty much, it's perfect. wink.gif

I think that's what it means. But I love all of your other suggestions!

When I first joined, that's what I thought. So I Google'd "POI Professor of Interest" and found a few results sort-of confirming it. I have just assumed that's what it was. I think seeing PA used for prospective advisor is what made me a bit unsure.

I guess it doesn't really matter if it's "person" or "professor" of interest...

Yes. I saw PA for the first time yesterday right after I made this thread, and I just wanted to laugh. Researchers and acronyms!!

so glad u started this thread. I had NO idea what it meant, but figured it had something to do with an interested party at the school the person applied to. Please, when I first got on here I had NO idea what LOR meant, let alone LTR -- im way behind with internet lingo.

I always assumed it was a corruption of PI, since it usually refers to the person that would have been said student's PI. The first time I saw it I assumed the person made a typo, but then I kept seeing it, and didn't know what it was supposed to mean! Thanks for asking!

What's "LTR" ?!?!? huh.gif

It never ends.

I would guess 'Long Term Relationship' but I'm not sure if that's what it is for this context - maybe 'Lead Technical Representative'?
