DanMcD Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Is anyone else constantly looking through the pre-matriculation site and poking around/re-reading everything? Or am I ju
sfsasse Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 That's amazing! Double whammy of joy! I am really confused right now about what to do. I have applied to several MSW programs...Harvard is the only ed program. I was drawn not only to the incredible curriculum, but I thought it would make a great supplement to an MSW. It would take the same time as a dual degree program, 3 yrs. Was this your top choice? Yes, this was one of two programs I applied to and, I'd say, my perfect match! My background is brain research heavy and I've been itching to move forward in educational neuroscience. I'm overwhelmingly excited to say the least! If I can help you think through the decision in any way let me know! And congratulations
alliknits Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Hi Folks! Congratulations! I was wondering if anyone is attending the open house at the end of the month and wanted to share a hotel room? I feel a little creepy doing this but I'm trying to get back into poor student mode... I'm planning on staying Thursday and Friday nights. Anyone interested? mjsmith 1
DanMcD Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Did anyone else get a call from the higher ed program? Alliknits- if you don't find anyone, let me know. I live a 12 minute walk or so from the red line (about 20 minute subway ride from Harvard). If I have enough heads up I can try and get it cleared by my room mates. We have an extra twin mattress we are able to drag into the living room for guests. mjsmith 1

Unfortunately, given the dates, I'm probably not going to be able to attend the open house.
PhDreams Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Ok...so I just realized that I never completed the HGSE financial aid app. Ugh....
darlindukkie Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Ok...so I just realized that I never completed the HGSE financial aid app. Ugh.... Hehe - you and me both I just sent them an email and told them it was on its way
PhDreams Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Hehe - you and me both I just sent them an email and told them it was on its way Good idea. I was thinking of calling tomorrow and asking if it was necessary to overnight the app. Just feel so ugh... [facepalm]
zhongguopaozhang Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 hello, I also got into TIE, but i'm an international student and may not be able to attend the opening house events... worse still, i don't even have access to fb and youtube at this point because of the national policy so probably you may now know where i am...
zhongguopaozhang Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Ok...so I just realized that I never completed the HGSE financial aid app. Ugh.... as for the financial app, isn't it automatically included in the application??? or should we file for a separate one??? omg...
PhDreams Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 The pre-matriculation website has links for fin aid and it's listed as being a separate app completely!

I'm trying to see if I could possibly stay with a random friend of a friend. I had no idea hotels would be so much!
laura13 Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Anyone in the L&T program? Desperately wanting to know more about this program~~!
Revo Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 The pre-matriculation website has links for fin aid and it's listed as being a separate app completely! It is, by far, the longest institutional financial aid application I've filled out this year. You also have to include a copy of your tax return (with all schedules and all 1099 forms).

I'm hoping their detailed financial application process means they're fully informed of the fact that I need their help in paying for all of the wonderful things they have to offer. ::Sigh:: my heart is telling me Harvard and my pocketbook is begging me to be practical. Revo - how do Stanford v. Harvard fall in your list of preferences?

I applied for the Leadership in Education Award and Urban Scholars Award in the application for admission, but missed the separate financial aid application...(ugh) Hopefully better late than never..Fingers crossed..
PhDreams Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Sounds like this was a pretty common mistake so I'm trying not to freak out... ^^^^
Revo Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Sounds like this was a pretty common mistake so I'm trying not to freak out... ^^^^ Harvard has a huge endowment, and federal loan money will always be there. At most, you may have hurt your chances a bit for some of the [insert weird obscure clause for a very limited set of people here ... like having a particular last name] scholarships.
laura13 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 I am. What would you like to know? I am. What would you like to know? Are you currently studying there? I want to know more about the courses provided and future development~THX!
PhD2000s Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Are you currently studying there? I want to know more about the courses provided and future development~THX! Yes, I am. The classes are very diverse and you can take classes at other Harvard schools as well as MIT. Lots of options! L & T allows a lot of flexibility, so you can focus your studies in the area(s) that most interest you (policy, teaching and learning, urban ed, leadership, etc.). Most of the professors have been very good and I have really enjoyed my classes. I also went to TC and I would say that HGSE classes tend to have more writing and research than TC (although perhaps that is just my choice of classes...). I am not sure what you mean by future development... What are you interested in studying or doing afterward? On the HGSE website you can look up current classes and sometimes see the syllabus. I had a lot of fun planning out my schedule last year mjsmith 1

I don't know your price range, but there's a hotel near the redline at JFK/UMass for about 135 a night (plus taxes I'm assuming) which isn't too bad. Doubletree
