michaelwebster Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Is that video really Yale MFA? Most of the paintings were so very very horrible! I thought it was a joke. Everyone that was rejected from Yale--- be very glad! I did love the paintings at 7:30 though. If you thought Yale was horrible I hope you didn't apply to any schools ranked in the top 10 for painting, because the work in that video is indicative of the current discourses of painting. Do not be worried about a 3.4 GPA, I would start worrying a little if you were under 2.0. GPA does not really matter. indigoconcord 1
MinimalistFaceLift Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Any New Genres types around here? If so, what programs are you applying to? I only applied to one school this year: Nebraska because of location and the program seems right up my alley. First year applying and not from an especially strong undergrad art background, so I dont know what to expect this year, but the anxiety is killing me. I can tell they have been checking out my portfolio, so im just waiting for a decision one way or another. Already looking ahead to applications next year in case things dont go my way this year. Anyone have a hot tip on programs I should be looking into? Im particularly interested in sound, video projection, and interactivity. Good luck to everyone. Glad to know Im not the only one going out of my damn mind right now.
BKCHICAGO Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 All interested in USC: there will be a phone/skype interview in early March for the final and near finalists. All other decisions will be snail mailed by mid March. Erpnope and BKCHICAGO 2
hwrios Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 The way the program is structured at Yale is less about creating refined, finished, work and is more about experimentation and producing a lot so that your ideas can progress and change. As people figure out where there interests lay they can refine their processes and technique, but my understanding is that that isn't really what they are looking for at that program. That being said, I think there was some nice work in there, but it is pretty hard to tell anything from that jokey video. Ok. that's cool if that is how they want to roll. It just seems like to me that "experimentation" should have progressed somewhat more once someone is at the stage of obtaining a "MASTER of fine arts" degree? Yeah, the video didn't do anyone any justice, and I'm sure I would have liked a lot more in person.... but still. smartstrategy 1
herki Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 (edited) Just FYI mine came as a letter from painting, not sculpture, so there might be departmental discrepancies. I also got my letter as early as I did bc I live in the city, obviously. since its snail mail and a crazy storm... I would say just call them on Monday and ask when you should expect to hear if invited to interview since you are out of state?? I got a letter dated Feb. 4 regarding an interview with SAIC sculpture department. So I'm assuming those who received the email should be getting a letter as well. I also just got a letter today accepting me into the SAIC Art and Technology Studies program! I feel the ATS program is more in-line with my work than the sculpture department, so that's good. Michael, do you know anything about the ATS program? It looks fairly new, right? Now that I got in, I'm looking to confirm what I found in my research and get a solid idea of what the whole program's about. Also, I'm trying to figure out how much I should mention the ATS acceptance in my interview. I could see that playing both in my favor and against me. On one hand, it reinforces my viability, but it could also mean that the Sculpture program feels they could move me down the list, because I might be going to SAIC anyways. That's ok, but of course, I'd like to get into as many programs as possible, to keep options open. Ideas? I'm going to be visiting friends in Chicago in a couple days, and I'm going to see if I can get a tour while I'm there. So exciting! Edited February 12, 2013 by herki

relentlesslemons Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 hey -- nice news about interview to those who have heard. Has anyone heard back from any ceramics departments yet? I've been trying to apply for residencies to take my mind off waiting to hear back from schools. I just applied to Skowhegan. Notre Dame Syracuse Alfred Cranbrook RISD Mass Art Tyler VCU

herki Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Herki, I was also accepted to the ATS program at SAIC. I'm interested to hear more about it. Did you receive any funding with your acceptance letter? Also curious, has anyone heard from SAIC video? No financial info in my letter. I filled out the FAFSA a couple weeks ago too. Hopefully we'll hear more from them in that regard before the deposit is due April 1. That'll be a deciding factor if I have to pick between programs/schools.
relentlesslemons Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Just a quick question --- I have been checking my application status and so far I just see not entered -- is that code for rejected or it hasn't been decided yet? Thanks for the help! Notre Dame Syracuse Alfred Cranbrook RISD Mass Art Tyler VCU
beards Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 beards Good luck with your interview tomorrow! Thanks! I can never tell how these things went, hopefully I did alright...
BKCHICAGO Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Do you know if those who are to be interviewed have already been contacted? I was told that the interviews are *usually* the 1st week of March. Since they are mostly skype/phone I would assume that there will not be advanced notice bc they dont expect you to fly down? there are several active people on this thing who have applied to SC, when they know you will know. haha. Did anyone go to the Open House? I think I have asked this already but I know they get really blunt. I couldn't make it out and I would love to know. I see you are applying to Irvine! Kevin Appel is absolutely amazing. If i was a painter's painter I would have applied just for him! BKCHICAGO 1
houndstooth Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Does anyone applying to VCU for sculpture or painting have "Incomplete items outstanding" on listed on their status? I double checked everything and it was all digital so I can't imagine what it would be.
ArsenicYellow Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Already answered you in the other thread you asked this My status for VCU reads "Complete ready for review", if you look at the box on the bottom of your application, it'll say what they have received and when. I'm having the incomplete status problem with UConn so I'm calling them
houndstooth Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Thanks! I realized I posted in the wrong thread - appreciate it!

I don't think the ATS program is super-new, but once shared space with the sculpture dept. Lots of students get interviews or acceptances from multiple departments, but there is usually only 1 free ride per dept, so you may want to mention your acceptance in hopes of upping your chances for that. ATS and sculpture have a lot of overlapping, so either way you will be in class with some of the same people. The different depts have somewhat different resources and reputations. PM me if you want to hear my take on these. and I would like to see your work if you have any online.
DrwMnml Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 i disagree. his 'realness' is the reason people know about him (and like him in your case?). his criticism/ideology and abounding over-generalizations/illogic is why most people cant stand him. dont get me wrong, im not in disagreement with an assertion that describes the 'art world' as full of harmful conditions and bleak circumstances, but neither is robert storr. dave hickey is a plain speaker. i can appreciate that, but not much else. Found this interview with Dave Hickey from a few months ago : http://galleristny.com/2012/10/dave-hickey-retiring-sort-of-interview/ A think both of these men are divisive in the art world. Understandably, as they both have strong opinions, which is probably why they are well known in the first place. I finally listened to the SVA lecture by D. Hickey posted a little ago. What I liked about his talk was that he addressed both of your points of realness and illogicality by mentioning that he would not have been as successful as a critic/theorist if a few, better ones hadn't died. Ultimately chalking up his success not to an intellectual superiority but rather to luck. So it's easy to see why some might like him for this sort of straight talk, while others may be left wanting intellectually. I do have to say, that in a field that is as didactic and convoluted as they come, whether I agree with what he is saying or not, I do appreciate his approach. All that to say, glad this lecture was mentioned in an earlier post and there was a subsequent discussion about the man. Much better to think about this sort of thing than why the hell you haven't heard back from such and such school, which as Hickey would probably mention, is predominantly going to come down to luck anyway. And I wish the best of it to everyone!
BKCHICAGO Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I am obviously comfortable being the jerk who harasses the poor administrative staff at every place I applied... I dont know if this has been posted, but SURPRISE! UCLA is sending out Mid-March. I forgot to ask if by mail or email, I would put my money on mail mail. So basically that is non-information and why I forgot to post it with the USC info and I apologize if that is redundant. I'm going to start buying booze for a drinking game called "mid-march". The game is: you drink when its "mid-march".
Tomislav Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I just got letter for RISD saying they will need my citizenship proof for financial aid purpose, Does this mean anything, did anyone get anything in the past like this Omg when I saw RISD letter in mail I almost pass out
kaleidoska Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Interview at SAIC for painting! Letter received 2/11. The letter mentions bringing along a few small scale works to discuss. Do you think they expect entirely new work (not included in my portfolio)? Tomislav 1

There are a few lectures of his on the intertoob. Here is another good one: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/2398143 Also anyone else interested, check out the peter schjeldahl lecture from SVA. He is a great speaker and his reviews in the new yorker are for the most part, spot on!!! Best to everyone applying. Hope to be classmates with some of you next fall.
thismessageispaidforby... Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I see many of you applied to CU Boulder. It is a great place to live for sure and their new building/facilities are SUPER. Funding is 100% with work study, teaching and technician positions. Lots of space to set up installations and show your work. They have over 40 locations you can sign out in the building, including large 20' x 20' spaces. Breakdown: MAP program/photo/video - basement Ceramics - 1st floor Sculpture - 2nd floor Printmaking/Administrative - 3rd Floor Painters - ALL THE WAY AT THE TOP. HUGE freight elevator BRAND NEW BUILDING certified green with a 75/25 fresh/recirculated oxygen system. Just like a Vegas Casino no parking... only loading zone. (though there is basically no where to park on campus) HUGE HUGE HUGE Art Section in the library. Almost every catalogue and book from every major biennial/ show. Grad students get to check books out for 6 months at a time. HUNDREDS of Bars - February is Stout Month at the Southern Sun Brewery and they introduce a new, in-house stout everyday. Best I had: Chai Stout.... so so so so tasty. Insane Football Games/Crowds Great bus system/bike path system. Free Buss Pass with ID Can we say: OUTDOOR EVERYTHING YOU COULD IMAGINE 10 Visiting Artist Lectures/Crits per Academic School Year Downfall - The program does not have those BIG SCHOOL connections to get you a gallery or a residency. I know a couple of recent grads who are teaching a class or two at a community college and struggling to figure out what to do next. This is a research school. Not a school where you have buyers and curators showing up to your open studios. LOVE LOVE LOVED creating work their and interacting with all the students and faculty. O AND YES.... Boulder claim to fame - 330 DAYS OF SUN PER YEAR!!!! This is no lie! ALWAYS SUNNY and you can see the flatirons almost anywhere in the city.
Emoree Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I see a few people have already been filling out the FAFSA. Are you guys doing that for grad school? Are you already accepted somewhere and will be going, or are you doing it just in case you do get accepted? Is there even really a deadline for FAFSA, especially for grad school?
houndstooth Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I see a few people have already been filling out the FAFSA. Are you guys doing that for grad school? Apply for the FAFSA now! It will automatically consider you for a number of government grants and loans. I think the deadline is Feb. 15th. If you aren't accepted anywhere, they just won't give you any money. Often schools will also look at this form when considering need-based financial aid as well. If you have applied anywhere, you should fill it out now.
