The Joker Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Hey folks, Speaking of funding, have any of you people started focusing on finding any outside scholarships or grants ect? when I visited RISD, they made it abundantly clear that we should be searching for some sort of outside aid. Does this mean RISD doesn't provide as much aide as other schools or is it because it costs more to go there?
hopingforthebest Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I am obviously comfortable being the jerk who harasses the poor administrative staff at every place I applied... I dont know if this has been posted, but SURPRISE! UCLA is sending out Mid-March. I forgot to ask if by mail or email, I would put my money on mail mail. So basically that is non-information and why I forgot to post it with the USC info and I apologize if that is redundant. I'm going to start buying booze for a drinking game called "mid-march". The game is: you drink when its "mid-march". Can I ammend the rules? Let's drink until mid-march, the silence is deafening!!!!
DrwMnml Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I see many of you applied to CU Boulder. It is a great place to live for sure and their new building/facilities are SUPER. Funding is 100% with work study, teaching and technician positions. Lots of space to set up installations and show your work. They have over 40 locations you can sign out in the building, including large 20' x 20' spaces. Breakdown: MAP program/photo/video - basement Ceramics - 1st floor Sculpture - 2nd floor Printmaking/Administrative - 3rd Floor Painters - ALL THE WAY AT THE TOP. HUGE freight elevator BRAND NEW BUILDING certified green with a 75/25 fresh/recirculated oxygen system. Just like a Vegas Casino no parking... only loading zone. (though there is basically no where to park on campus) HUGE HUGE HUGE Art Section in the library. Almost every catalogue and book from every major biennial/ show. Grad students get to check books out for 6 months at a time. HUNDREDS of Bars - February is Stout Month at the Southern Sun Brewery and they introduce a new, in-house stout everyday. Best I had: Chai Stout.... so so so so tasty. Insane Football Games/Crowds Great bus system/bike path system. Free Buss Pass with ID Can we say: OUTDOOR EVERYTHING YOU COULD IMAGINE 10 Visiting Artist Lectures/Crits per Academic School Year Downfall - The program does not have those BIG SCHOOL connections to get you a gallery or a residency. I know a couple of recent grads who are teaching a class or two at a community college and struggling to figure out what to do next. This is a research school. Not a school where you have buyers and curators showing up to your open studios. LOVE LOVE LOVED creating work their and interacting with all the students and faculty. O AND YES.... Boulder claim to fame - 330 DAYS OF SUN PER YEAR!!!! This is no lie! ALWAYS SUNNY and you can see the flatirons almost anywhere in the city. Thanks for the info on Boulder. It really does seem like a great program on the upswing. The faculty, facilities, and other resources all seem top notch. Not to mention the sun, which for a Southern expat currently living in Seattle is a huge draw for me. I have an interview this friday with them and look forward to learning more about it. All that said, the lack of exposure to galleries and curators is a little worrisome to me. That is a huge part of choosing to go to grad school.
aethiryn Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 All interested in USC: there will be a phone/skype interview in early March for the final and near finalists. All other decisions will be snail mailed by mid March. Thanks so much for posting this!! I feel a little bit at ease knowing this. Does anyone have any idea when we should be hearing back from UC Irvine?
linajan Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I just wanted to thank everyone for their informative posts and support you all have given each other throughtout this arduous process. It has defintiely given me piece of mind and I almost feel that because statistically, most of us will not be going to graduate school next year, and may have to re-apply next, that maybe we should create a virtual artistic community in the meantime. Anyone down?
BKCHICAGO Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Thanks so much for posting this!! I feel a little bit at ease knowing this. Does anyone have any idea when we should be hearing back from UC Irvine? No problem. Also, you are thinking SAIC performance, right? I looked at your portfolio, you should work with Nick Cave for sure!
idioteck Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 (edited) I live in Denver and thought about applying to CU Boulder but I heard from the grad office that the funding for their program was not that great (maybe they were wrong?!?) so I didn't apply. There art scene in Boulder is TINY, most everything is in Denver where the scene is small but active. Personally I wouldn't worry about if your grad program sets you up with a gallery or not. Just focus on developing kick ass work and the galleries will follow. Edited February 12, 2013 by idioteck worldly 1
Emoree Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 EEK i broke down and called Bloomington, to ask about the FAFSA, initially, then I asked about where they were in decisions... She said that they're almost done looking at applications in the printmaking department and she should have their decisions by the end of the week..... She said they have some things they're trying to figure out-- whatever that means!! argh! *head explodes*
BKCHICAGO Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 YES! Northwestern interview for March 1st. Just got an email. There is an open house thing the next day so I guess Ill be meeting some of you who are also interviewing! BKCHICAGO and Erpnope 2
aethiryn Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 No problem. Also, you are thinking SAIC performance, right? I looked at your portfolio, you should work with Nick Cave for sure! YUP! Got the phone call about a week ago, was admitted into SAIC performance program. Not sure when I am going to hear about funding though, my decision to go there is contingent upon lots of funding. I got into a lot of debt in my undergrad, don't want to it to be that way for my grad as well.
bots Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Thanks! I can never tell how these things went, hopefully I did alright... Did you go to MICA for undergrad?
bengston Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I was told that the interviews are *usually* the 1st week of March. Since they are mostly skype/phone I would assume that there will not be advanced notice bc they dont expect you to fly down? there are several active people on this thing who have applied to SC, when they know you will know. haha. Did anyone go to the Open House? I think I have asked this already but I know they get really blunt. I couldn't make it out and I would love to know. I see you are applying to Irvine! Kevin Appel is absolutely amazing. If i was a painter's painter I would have applied just for him! Hey, I did get to go to LA for a week and visit all the programs because a close friend of mine had just moved out there to go to AFI. The USC info session and tour was really blunt, in a good way. Unfortunately I can't seem to remember anything they said about interviews. What they did say was that depending on who they let in the previous year it can be really hard to get in as a photographer, sculptor, or whatever because they don't want everyone to be doing the same thing. Also, they really bluntly said that there was a bias against painters because none of the faculty are really painters and although they would like to have some in the program they can never agree on one to let in. So that was a little funny. But honestly, the way the presented everything was really nice and funny. They are just trying to let you know exactly how things work so you can send them the best application possible. It made me really like the program.
michaelwebster Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 (edited) Hey folks, Speaking of funding, have any of you people started focusing on finding any outside scholarships or grants ect? when I visited RISD, they made it abundantly clear that we should be searching for some sort of outside aid. Does this mean RISD doesn't provide as much aide as other schools or is it because it costs more to go there? All art schools are expensive and don't have much funding. There was an article published a few years ago of the most expensive colleges based on what students actually paid, after financial aid was disbursed, and art schools filled most of the top of the list. The reason for this is poor graduates = poor endowments. Edited February 12, 2013 by michaelwebster
jacquelinelate Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Has anyone heard from Berkeley's MFA Art Practice program?
hwrios Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 i don't think so. I think it's more like supply and demand. Do you realize how many applications these schools are getting? They could probably jack up the prices and they would find people would would be willing to go into debt for it. And there are LOTS of schools with funding, just do a little research.

jacquelinelate Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Thank you, clem09. The post you referred to was not legit. I was feeling antsy and called the admissions office this afternoon - found out they have not made any decisions yet and was told I would know by the end of the month.

Lightswitch Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Hey all those with SAIC interview experience, I am wondering whether you'd have any advice on compensating for not being able to attend the on-campus interview. I live overseas and there is no way I can make it to Chicago, so will be opting for a phone interview instead. Based on what I've been reading about the interview day, not going in person sounds a much bigger disadvantage than at other schools who don't mind Skype and interview on a smaller scale. Anything to keep in mind over the phone? (I'm interviewing through the Painting&Drawing Dept, by the way.)
