foucaultmania Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 (edited) I have been admitted to the PhD in Political Science (IR) at McMaster. I will most probably decline the offer, but I am not sure. If there is someone on the waiting list here, please contact me. Note: I am an international applicant. Edited March 14, 2013 by foucaultmania
ksm006 Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Has anyone heard from Mcgill for Poli sci? They seem to have sent out some rejections earlier this week but I haven't seen any acceptances so far.. I'm hoping the fact that I haven't been rejected yet is a good sign but who knows..
respectyourheart Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Has anyone heard from UBC's English MA program?
Vr4douche Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Whether you are excepted or rejected there is nothing you can do about it now. Try to stay calm, if you are rejected its not the end of the world. You can always apply again and improve your credentials in the mean time. This is especially true for those of you who are still in classes. Don't let the waiting distract you from your present studies! If you are rejected and do another year it might be a good idea to add another minor. My problem is that I did a specialist degree which was very focused on medieval history. Because of this I was very limited as to which grad programmes I could apply. My focus is on early medieval philosophy. Had I done a minor in philosophy I could have also applied for philosophy grad programmes. crimsoc and IvanBezdomnii 1 1

Audie Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Does anyone know if there is any funding provided by universities for professional masters? I was too late for OGS
Lin111 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Does anyone know if there is any funding provided by universities for professional masters? I was too late for OGS From my experience Audie, funding is not often provided for professional masters programs, particularly programs which are accelerated (ie. take 1 year instead of 2). I also do not think you can apply to OGS unless you're doing a research/thesis-based masters or PhD, so I don't think it matters you missed the deadline! Sometimes you can be offered/guaranteed a paid practicum to offset expenses, but that's the closest thing I've heard to 'funding.' I'm sure some universities have specific internal awards for their professional programs though (I'm mostly talking from my experience with MPH; masters of public health, professional degrees).
thunderchunky Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Does anyone have a good resource for Canadian GPA conversion? My undergrad school is on a 4.3 scale and I'd like to know how the schools I'm applying to do the conversion.
kdav Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Carleton's grading scale on their newspaper's website: http://www.charlatan.ca/2010/09/carletons-grading-system-charts/ If you want a more "official" source (consistent with newspaper), here's one from their School of PPA: http://www5.carleton.ca/sppa/ccms/wp-content/ccms-files/2008106105pal.pdf I'm assuming the percentages are allocated appropriately. thunderchunky 1
thunderchunky Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 (edited) Further complicating matters is that my school doesn't even have a standard percentage grade to letter grade conversion scheme (it's specific to each academic department). Edited March 15, 2013 by thunderchunky

My undergrad school is on a 4.3 scale and I'd like to know how the schools I'm applying to do the conversion. often 4.3 = 4.0 = 90-100%, 4.0=3.7 = 85-100%, 3.7 = 3.4 = 80-85% and so on The percentages are specific to departments however
ldhandren Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 those who have been accepted to the MPP program of UofT, do you mind me asking, what were your entrance grades like? I applied with a 4.0 GPA overall (89% average), and a 4.0 in my current final year of undergrad (90% average). Also, if it helps any to know, first round candidates have until April 1st to respond ! herbypollard Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Finally ended up hearing back from one of the programs I applied to. York University sent me a letter letting me know I'm wait listed. Both my boyfriend (Mathematics PhD) and I are waiting to hear about our applications from University of Toronto. It is so stressful! Every time we talk about it, all we can do is lament the wait.
Gingersnaps Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Hello, I've applied to Ryerson's MPPA program. Soft deadline was January 13 but programs will accept application until full. Quick check on website shows MPPA is still open. So I am not expecting any decisions until April/May. It would be nice if I could get an answer before but oh well... Guess I'll try not to check my inbox for the next two/three weeks. P.S. WinterisComing are you the same as WinterisComing on redflagdeals.com's graduate school acceptance thread? I almost posted there the link to grad cafe. I think the thread over there might pick up once more results trickled in... WinterIsComin' 1

annecity Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 I am definitely hoping that the program being underated and obscure works to our advantage. I only heard about it because there was an email circulated through the Canadian Communication Association about it, my friend and classmate from my current program is a member and saw it and forwarded it me because she thought I might be interested. One of my very good friends is currently at waterloo and yet I had still not heard of the program before that. It definitely seems like somethign that's still not very well known, but it seems like a good sort of program for waterloo to have to improve its humanities offerings. I agree that the rhetoric option seems decent too, although I'm not sure it seems as in line with Waterloo's general reputation. I think having a hands on degree from what is basically canada's best engineering/technology school might have more cache. I have been really itching to do something more hands on and constructive in the past few years, with critical theory it often feels like it's all inconsequential estoerica that only tears down, this might be a nice antidote. It really will be a hard choice between this and SFU for a phd (mcgill finally made their expected rejection official today) really hard. SFU is a great fit for me and what i do, but this program would give me an even wider base and new perspective on what I do. I'd just have so many more options both academically and career wise outside of academia I expect. I glanced over the critical media lab projects a while ago, I'll have to go refresh myself on what they've been doing while i wait to hear. I wonder how much longer it will be, the deadline was so late I wonder if it might be april...I really hope not. Hi! sorry i am replying late, I got a tad bit busy. I'm starting to think they won't accept people until april.. just because the deadline was so late. SFU VS waterloo.. that seems like a hard choice. But you can always go back to do your phd, there's no rush. Plus, you have to give up a lot of time .. into doing a phd. My feeling is that XDM will be harder to get into. They were even talking about asking people to submit a portfolio of their work........so, I think we applied at the right time. I am honestly dying to know though, I go on quest literally everyday to check :*( no news yet. I just wish they would tell me...
