2014 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results

For the type of job that will net you the research experience/LORs you're looking for, I've found that employers are wary of people who are planning on a short stay. Interviewing at the University where I work now, I had to commit to a two year term to be taken seriously as a Research Assistant candidate. It kind of makes sense; for a postdoc/research scientist to train you for up to six months, they don't want to have you turn around and leave within the year - not a great return on their investment. For me, though, the two year stay has definitely been worth it in terms of preparation for grad school.

This was exactly my experience. I made it clear that I intended to go back to school and my PI told me he wanted a two year committment. Two years is a good amount of time. I've been here three years now and feel really good about the experience I've gained here.

Has anyone heard from Stanford Genetics?

I'm waiting for that too.  I hope they made the right decision and just give us an interview.

Anyone else extensively research backup plans? Haha. I have a short list of programs with late deadlines going.

I'm going to start applying for grad. schools with late deadline too this weekend.  I really want to start my PhD program ASAP.

I've been doing some digging on that myself, mostly research tech positions at my university.  What were you looking into?

Just graduate programs, but if I get desperate enough probably start looking for interesting science jobs since I can't comeback to my home university empty handed.

And so goes the flurry of Berkeley rejects....at least we are officially resting in peace now.

Not sure what field you guys are in exactly but if it's biomedical, you should also consider hospitals in your respective areas.

Joining the soul train of MCB rejections. Woo Woo!

Welcome to the exclusive club.  I can't rest in peace until I know I have one interview though.

Hi all,

I have got interview invitation from NYU 2 weeks ago (for the end of January) --> today I got rejection email..

Why did they invite me for interview just to send me rejection email 2 weeks later... :(

Huh? That sounds weird to me. The interview hasn't even happened. I would call and find out if there was some sort of mix up...

Somebody asked about UCLA ACCESS/BSP interview flight arrangements.  I received an invite to different ACCESS program to which I had a few days to respond, then they sent follow-up information on flight arrangements.  It does sound like the program will cover flights, as they give you the email of a woman in finances to contact with a travel authorization number and details about your location, etc.  They will also be hosting in university-owned guest housing.

Has anyone heard back from Northwestern (NUIN), Columbia Neurobiology & Behavior, or NYU Sackler?

Looking at the results page, I've noticed users saying they received phone calls from POIs inviting them to interview at a university I am interviewing at. However, my phone call came from someone who I did not list as a POI on my application. Is this professor interested in me as a potential student, and did they support my invite? I even emailed the admissions with an updated list of POIs (due to some of my original choices not accepting grad students) and didn't think to include the professor who called me. It's not that I don't find their research interesting - I'm just not sure if the basic lab research this professor does is close enough to clinical trials to support my interest in translational research.

I called - no one answer (they sent the email after 5PM EDT) I emailed them and I hope to hear anything...but I guess I will have to wait till Monday to understand whats going on...

I was wondering if there are any other person here that got invitation to interview at NYU and before the interview they decided to reject him...-

Don't know but just wanted to say I listed the same two home programs as you, but in reverse order. I think I put Ecol and Evol first and genetics second. I really don't expect a Stanford invite, but I also don't think the invitations for our programs have gone out yet.

I see Michigan PIBS started handing out rejections. Got nothing. Could this mean anything? Or am I mostly likely probably rejected? I am about to have a meltdown from this! haha

I received my interview offer 2 weeks after other people posted getting interviews in this thread so you may still have a chance. I know they were still going through applications when I got my interview offer. The first week was filled up though when I signed up for the interview. They had close to 1000 applications for PIBS this year.

I wish I had as much faith in me as everyone in my life does... my dad reminding me how all the schools I've been rejected from are top-tier and the ones I have left are great too, I just have to be patient... easier said than done!

I hear you! It's so much easier for family and friends to believe in us and know that it's all going to work out. When you're in the middle of waiting, it can feel like you'll be waiting forever.  :)

Did you not reply to the interview invite maybe? It seems so bizarre that they would do that.

Maybe Stanford is delayed?

Seems to be mostly Cancer Bio and some Immuno

It definitely sounded like the people who called were told that a lot of the Biosciences responses would happen on Monday.

I think you're still good. NYU did a joint admissions process for neuroscience this year. All applications were reviewed for 2 programs:

  1. Doctoral Program in Neural Science (Faculty of Arts and Science)
  2. Doctoral Program in Neuroscience & Physiology (Sackler Institute, School of Medicine)

My guess is that you got an interview for one, and a rejection for the other.

Look here for more info about the joint admissions process: http://www.neuroscience.nyu.edu/graduate-programs

Oh really? That is good to hear. I tried calling them all day no one was picking up

I got the info from earlier in this thread. I also think you might be right that they're running a little behind their expected schedule.

Also, just so you guys know: I applied last year as a college senior (currently finishing up my undergrad research as a post-bac) and was basically obliterated in grad school applications. Swallowed my pride, applied again, re-wrote my essays, and now things seem to be looking up!

tl;dr waiting a year and re-grouping isn't the end of the world.

I second this.  Last year I applied to 10 schools, interviewed at 4, was accepted at 1 (that I didn't end up liking) and rejected by the rest.  I've spent my gap year as a technician in my undergrad lab and it has been absolutely awesome.

Waiting a year if you have to is most definitely not the end of the world and you'll actually have some time to do fun things!
