Guest Gnome Chomsky Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Just curious if there's anyone out there. It's hard to tell now because we're all older and so caught up in our little words. Just wondering if there's anyone out there who none of the following applies to: In high school, you were NOT involved in: *the math team *Chess team *band geek *took all AP/IB classes *did research *tutored *spent summers interning *involved in academic extracurriculars *competed in a Spelling Bee *spent years studying for the SAT/ACT *dreamed about getting into college *dreamed about getting into grad school *took college classes *took classes for college credit *studied a few hours every day *studied on weekends *anything else I haven't though of
Imaginary Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I did none of these except take college classes; however, I was still a total nerd. Especially after all my friends either graduated or dropped out.
DeafAudi Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Lol...I don't think being a "nerd" is a bad thing but none of those applied to me. I was actually kind of a slack off in high school.
maelia8 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I was definitely involved in a whole lot of nerdy clubs and extracurriculars during high school - model UN, amnesty international, mock trial, academic scavenger hunt, spelling bee, math club, key club … the list goes on. Definitely took mostly AP classes too … not much else to do when you live in a small town.

But also did marching band, concert band, community band, MUN, We the People, Close Up, musical theatre, AP classes, NHS, etc so I didn't really fit in with the rest of my CDE team (FFA competition) who all had the boots and beltbuckles.
LittleDarlings Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 (edited) Didn't do any of those things, I was in pep club and journalism and DECA Edited April 20, 2014 by LittleDarlings
spellbanisher Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I was a slacker. My only extracurriculars were cross country and track. I didn't even take the SATs/ACT.
mockingjay634 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 i took a good amount of AP courses but besides that, i SUCKED as a student... it wasn't that i didn't have the capability but i was just extremely bored and the student didn't invest in minority students (true story). i actually was desperate to go to an early college program around my sophomore year but my parents didn't agree with me moving away. i still kept some of those habits into college until i realized that i really needed to work on my academic skills if i wanted to go somewhere in life. nonetheless, i ALWAYS knew i wanted a PhD in the field that i am going into. surprised i was consistent with that despite all my BS

personalityresearcher Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 None of it. Except dreamed of going to grad school - with my 2.8 HS GPA .
Macavity Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 I was the kid drawing cartoons and scribbling poetry instead of taking notes. Not really nerdy but definitely weird/socially awkward.
fuzzylogician Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 I didn't do any of those things and most of them were not even possible where I grew up. I'd still consider myself a geek, though. It's more in the spirit than the actions, if you ask me. VioletAyame 1
clairenicole Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 I was even worse than a nerd, I was a scene kid. gk210 and DeafAudi 2
spunky Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 I was a scene kid. well... i was a hard-core emo and i milked that way after it stopped being cool as an undergrad (and was still a nerd tho. so an emo nerd!)
QASP Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Not at all. I was a punk and a slacker in high school. Graduated with a 1.99 HS GPA. I wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah, I didn't mean nerd as in someone who, for example, reads comics, plays WOW, watches Battlestar Gallactica, etc (I would consider that a geek). I meant nerd in the sense of a super do-gooder, like most of us probably are now and have been throughout our college careers. I'd consider myself a nerd as of the past 5 or so years. Never been a geek though. Never was much of anything you could fit in a category, I don't think. Edited April 21, 2014 by Gnome Chomsky
Maleficent999 Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 I was the smart, nerdy type until high school when I turned into the drama club, nerdy type and my grades were just kind of average because I spent so much time doing theatre. I definitely wasn't considered "popular" though. I was probably kind of invisible.

You're the type of person I secretly wanted to date in high school. If you look at my current SO, it allllllll makes sense. Thankfully, he's not a slacker anymore but that punk thing is still there. Sometimes I wonder if this relationship will serve to "get it out of my system."
Eigen Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Only one of those I did was take college classes. I trained horses, worked as a farm hand, ran a small blacksmith shop, and volunteered working with the Wildlife and Fisheries during high school.

In that case I definitely wasn't a nerd, I had to do summer school and night school to make up for all the classes I failed. I think I ended up graduating with a 1.7 and I had to go to community college to get my GPA to an acceptable level so I could enroll in a four year university.

Dropped out of high school with close to a 0.0 GPA, got my GED, joined the military, then went to community college, took the placement test and got placed into Honors, then transferred to a 4-year on a full scholarship. Took me about 22 years to give a damn.
safetybelts Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Fun fact: being a nerd is cool now. Kids these days won't have to endure the bullying previous generations faced. gk210 1
maelia8 Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Believe it or not, I was a nerd AND a geek. AP classes and extracurriculars up the wazoo, 3.9 GPA, but all of my hobbies involved anime, manga, cosplay, and indie comics, so my friends were all into that stuff too. All of the other honors students did NOT get it … they thought I was pretty weird for hanging out with a bunch of people who for the most part didn't give a damn about their grades. @Gnome Chomsky: yup, the alternative to being a nerd or a geek in my small town was definitely meth or serious weed (I'm talking about growing acres of it in the forest and running a whole operation of trimmers and dealers - can you guess where I'm from?).
