WINE, WAIT, AND WHINE THREAD

My PI has only ever seen me with hair not my natural black! Bkeached it last year and have been blond, pink, gray, lavender, blue, purple, and now turquoise. 

 

I dont plan on giving up fun hair colors any time soon.

My wife is a cosmetologist, and I've never seen her natural hair color. I've known her for 13 years.

Every so often I see the roots of her natural color, but that's it.

I second that.  When it comes to my career and what's best for my future I prefer to make those decisions on my own.  Considering how my choices affect someone else is fine, but I'm not a fan of consulting someone else.

As for the irrational fear - not so irrational. I have been known to do some really weird stuff while asleep including, but not limited to, eating pringles, cooking pancakes, having a full blown text conversation with multiple people, drawing a picture of ducks as our new overlords and cleaning the whole house. So emailing a PI - not that whacky! Just make sure you leave email sending devices out of the bedroom and you should be golden!

Ummmm shouldn't you be talking to your doctor about some kind of medication for that?  If you're already eating and texting while sleep aren't you worried you might drive a car?

Thanks for the concern! It's not very regular and only in high periods of stress so I try to make sure I'm not alone at those times. But maybe I should see someone haha. 

I think I've now told all the important people in my life that I'm off to the US for PhD, visa pending. Most people have been thrilled - a few have called me a massive nerd (they'd be right) and a few have said "why would you want to go there? They have guns and stuff!". All in all a positive response! Best of luck to those of you still waiting - I have everything crossed for you all

I think we reinforce the stereotype that academics wear thick glasses, but who doesn't wear glasses anymore? Although, I mostly wear contacts now. The extreme refraction from my lenses was becoming so great that it was giving me migraines by mid day. I still love my glasses, but they don't love me.

Shame it's so difficult to get corrective surgery at our level.

Official admittance to Northwestern's MS BME program rolled in this morning. A good way to wake up after taking a red eye back home from Vegas, if I had to say. Plus turning $200 into $440 on blackjack doesn't hurt, either. Thank all of you for the really positive words of support and encouragement. It certainly feels much more like a victory than settling! I only hope that other applicants who are still waiting on responses or have had a rough go of it this cycle stay strong. Even if you don't make it in somewhere, odds are you probably have a lot going for you, and even if you have to put in some extra time to demonstrate your prowess, you'll definitely find a way. Look at me (everything in chronological order):

1. Original UG class of '11 (graduated in '13, last in my major's class of 15 people) (Materials Science, for those interested)
2. 2.40 GPA
3. 1.5 years working as 'the wine guy' in a fancy grocery store while I tried to get my shit together and finish the last few credits on my degree
4. ~2.5 years (ongoing) working my butt off in a small R&D pharmaceutical startup (started as a tech, now Associate III, this probably saved my life)
5. GRE: 161Q, 159V, 4.0W
6. Now: turning 28 in September, probably going to Northwestern, and in position to finally hit the goals I had set for myself when I was about 20

I took the long way, and not everyone has the same cookie-cutter route to get where they're going. I had to claw my way back from the lowest place I'd ever been, but to be honest, 'the bottom' was something I had never glimpsed before, but man did I need it if I was ever going to have a chance to really pursue this path. Heck, even what I've got in front of me isn't what I expected, but I can still see a pathway, and that's what's important. Always keep your eyes on the prize, and be ready to be flexible and persevere when unexpected things come up in the road. Your life is what you'll make of it. No guarantees except for what you create for yourself.

I got the official acceptance from Vandy's grad school, and I'm hesitant about putting in my acceptance. I'm weird...also still sick. But the weekend is soon, yaaaaaaaay.

I'm so happy for you! If for no other reason for the fact that you won't have to fill out another 20-odd applications next year!  

Also, it's good to see the bottom. It makes you more motivated to make something of yourself. It's for that very reason that a lot of very, very motivated students are from lower-income backgrounds. I'm sure you'll do well at Northwestern!

It's not that weird. I accepted my offer, and I was paranoid that I fudged up the acceptance, at least until I got a notification of my student ID number. 

I'm still a little bit paranoid that I screwed something up. Although enrollment starts on Monday. Guess I'll know then...

Edit: Just checked, and I actually have an enrollment window, which means I'm official. Whew! It also tells me how much credits I'm bringing in. I have no graduate-level degree, and I'm coming in with 215 credit hours. I'm going to set a record.

I'm jealous, my contacts were always too thick and they hurt soo badly. But I guess it depends more on each individual. And I hear ya.. my glasses are so thick, there is some chromatic aberration, meaning that red colors are "bent" differently than blue colors... so looking at a purple LED, I actually see a red and a blue LED. Which would be hilarious, if I weren't doing optical physics

CONGRATULATIONS So happy for you! I actually breathed a small sigh of relief when I read that. It can take time to find your path so congratulations for Northwestern.

@Effloresce yay congratulations for Vanderbilt! I've yet to get my official student number or anything yet which is a little nerve-wracking. Got to wait for my transcript to make its way over the atlantic for the grad school to start the process. Ugh.

I still haven't heard from five programs, all of which have rejected people this cycle. Let's hope if I'm on a waitlist at one of them, other people's GRFP results will help me out.

So as I wait to hear back from scholarship applications, how long do I have before I have to accept or decline the  Federal Un-Subsidized Student Loans? The award package was emailed to me yesterday but it didn't tell me any dates. I don't want to accept until I hear back from my scholarship programs I just applied to; which may not be until after April 15th. Any ideas?

So, are we still waiting? Because I'm not waiting anymore. I committed. O.o I'm going to Carnegie Mellon! Yay! However, most awkward thing ever happened. I was walking through my current school's philosophy department, and a random prof introduced himself and I was like "Hi! I'm Elizabeth!" And he was like "Neat! Are you a prospective?" And I was like "Oh. Uh. Nope." And walked away. Apparently the visit is occurring now. Which explains why my adviser was in his office when I dropped in to give him an update.

I think we have made this more of a congrats and what now thread. Congrats to you! I am trying to figure out funding now. Applying for scholarships in hopes of avoiding student loans.
