Has anyone heard from SMU or UT Austin yet, or know when notifications will go out? I've heard from all my other schools, but I'm waiting on those two before I make any decisions.

I was accepted by SMU a couple weeks ago but have not heard from UT Austin yet either.

Re GWU: someone posted on the results page they were waitlisted and then admitted. Are you able to share if you were told what your position on the waitlist was, and if so what it was? I would appreciate it if you could message me or just share some more info here. Thanks!

Hang on!  Did  you receive confirmation that your materials had been received?  If not, then you can politely ask if the program has received the materials and then say that  you look forward to hearing the decision.

Thanks! I have a couple of options - an MA offer at UDel, a PhD offer at UFL, and waitlisted at GMU, but I really liked the professors at SMU. If you don't mind sharing, what does your funding package look like?

Well, I didn’t get into IU. A bit bummed because it was my daddy’s alma marter and it would have been a nice tribute to him in the wake of his passing. 

Ah well, Kansas State seems like a better fit for me anyway. It’s a smaller department which I like, they have the WWII Studies association, enviornmental history professors, a vet school whose library I can utilize and my adviser matches up very well for my project.

Just wondering how you found out regarding IU? Did you contact them or was it an application update?

I received an email from the department informing them that I didn’t get in. They were very nice about it and said that they unfortunately only had 10 spots for admission. They did say that they liked my application so that was nice.

Hard won advice: if you even get a hint that your personality or style of work might be incompatible with that of your advisor, consider going elsewhere. A difficult advisor-advisee relationship will, at best, slow your progress and make you want to scream. But I swear I’m not just venting.

UT Austin decisions are up on the website, though don't expect an email, as it states "This is your official notification. A letter will not be mailed to you." Super bland 3 line rejection, particularly enjoyed the phrasing of "on the basis of their recommendation, your application has been denied."

How common is it for graduate programs to pay for your campus visit after you have been accepted? Only one of the programs offered to help with travel costs and I'm wondering if it's worth asking other programs if they would be willing to help me out with that as well.

I don't see why not. As far as I know, it's not uncommon. How much the school is willing to pay really depends on how much money the department has. USC never gave me an upper limit as to how much they were willing to pay, UCLA was willing to pay anything under $500, and my friend told me Northwestern could only cover $350. It doesn't hurt to send an e-mail and ask.

Very usual for PHD. It would be a very big warning flag otherwise.

Sorry to respond so late, but I know exactly how you feel. I'm an international student who didn't get into a PhD program the first time around and ended up at one of the schools that rejected you after reapplying. (I didn't, and still don't, have any publications or conference papers, by the way.) Lots of people go through several application cycles before landing somewhere, so I urge you not to give up. Be realistic about your chances, but don't be too down on yourself. The application game is kind of a crapshoot and it's very possible you'll fare better next year. Give yourself a break for the time being, figure out what you're going to do next year in terms of work/life, and then start brainstorming ways to improve your application. You may have to tweak the focus, pick different schools to apply to, or consider a master's program.

Seconding what everyone else said. University of Florida offered me $300 to come up for admit weekend. It certainly won't hurt to ask, and if they act weird about you asking, take it as a GIANT red flag.

Ah, MA programs are different. There I would say the presence of visit funding is a good sign.
