Congrats to the person who got into Yale! I haven't heard anything about when the decision should be going out officially, but I think it'll likely be sometime next week.

I'm looking forward to hearing the news good/bad from Yale too. Was expecting to hear about decisions next week as well.

Hey everyone, just wanted to provide an update that a friend of mine received an email notification this morning that he was accepted into the University of South Carolina's PhD program; so if you applied, maybe you will also be hearing some good news soon, fingers crossed!

Same! Had an informal interview a few weeks ago, and I'm now feverishly checking my inbox...good luck everyone :)

Hi! Thanks for all the information you have provided. It has been unbelievable useful (this is my 1st cycle applying to US graduate programs).

I just wanted to ask a simple question: is it common for POI's to contact you before any official communication of admission? Is it a department/university thing? Or depends entirely on the POI?

Thanks!

I guess it depends on what one considers common, but it's unheard of, at least. And I imagine this is largely dependent on the department, university, and POI.

If you did or did not hear back from a POI, I wouldn't necessarily believe it distinctly applies anything in particular.

Hi everyone! This is my first application season (just got my BA from a liberal arts college in the Midwest in December) and I applied to a mix of History and Ancient History (Classics) PhD programs. I got an email from my POI last week that I was accepted into Ohio State with full funding (!!!), but haven't heard anything from the other 8 schools I applied to.

I would love some advice-- on Thursday, I was nervous after checking the Results page and seeing so many UPenn interview requests, so I went on my application page and saw (to my horror) that its status was "materials needed" because they didn't have my GRE scores. I emailed immediately and was told that they found my scores and linked them to my application, and that it should not affect the application process. But, so many interviews and acceptances have gone out already. Should I be worried? Obviously I had a slim shot of getting in anyway, but I'm concerned my application didn't even make it to the AC yet.

I actually had this too, which was odd because they had said previously they would match it. I had just assumed that they failed to update it. I can see where it would become a problem if they did not consider "complete" applications, but if they said that it should not affect the process... I may also call them tomorrow.

I actually just went through my  old email with the grad coordinator at Penn. She had me put my scores directly into the application and said that they would check the system if need be. So it's likely not a problem. While this may not be helpful for you, I figured I would leave it here for others.

Twiddling my thumbs waiting in the same boat as most people. No news from Minnesota and Michigan.  Ohio State should be sending out soon, or they have already sent.  Seems people hear from POI often, but I did not have a sustained conversation with mine. Georgetown looks like its mid to late February based on the results page.  I threw three 3 MA's out there 2 econ (my other undergrad major, Tufts and U Oregon mostly because they offer funding and I would probably be somewhat happy in public policy) 1 in history (Rutgers, its in-state so tuition is not killer, I think I could manage it with my savings and part time work, but really would rather not spend all of my net-worth on a degree without much ROI).   I half think I did the MA apps for something to do, but I like having plans B and C.

Already mentally constructing and reconstructing a flowchart of outcomes and my course of action from there, looking at calendars to plot timelines, analyzing my process this time, trying to cull wasted time.  This sort of over-planing is probably not useful, but I think it gives me a false sense of control I need to reduce stress.  It is weird having such a binary set of outcomes; either I know exactly what I am doing for the next 5 years, or I have no idea what I am doing for the next five years.

Is the person who posted the Grad Institute Geneva acceptance in the survey results hanging out in this forum, by any chance?  GIG will be on my list next year if I don't get accepted to Cornell this year and I'd love to talk with you about the school.

If the POI says that you're been admitted, s/he should mention that an official letter from the Graduate School or the DGS should be forthcoming. Don't believe it until the letter is actually in your hands (particularly if funding details are included).

As for OSU, good grief, learn to say "Ohio State" or "OSU" as to keep us separate from another university called "Ohio University" which has no PhD program in History... :) Anyway, I'm here to answer any questions!  (Except for admissions process as I'm out of the country and thereby not there to badger the grad coordinator on your behalf ;) )

As someone who spent a few years growing up in Columbus, who's a huge Ohio State football fan, and whose parents both got their doctorates from OSU, I can't endorse this enough!  Also, it's THE Ohio State University, @rex-sidereus;)

@noctua congrats on Ohio !! It was on my application list until pretty much the last minute. Whom did you apply to work with?

Thanks, rex-sidereus-- Kristina Sessa and David Brakke! Anthony Kaldellis is also there, and he's sort of a Byzantine studies rockstar, which is a tertiary interest of mine. It's a great fit and they have a superb placement rate, so I'm really thrilled.\

EDIT: I see your program is Byzantine studies-- sorry for explaining to you who Kaldellis is :)

Hi! I was wondering what it might mean if your POI contacted you for a skype chat and tried to convince you basically to choose their program over others you had applied to? It wasn't a formal interview from what I gathered -- should I just take this with a grain of salt and not get my hopes up? I was really confident and happy after the "interview" but now I'm just even more anxious because people initially told me that meant I was probably in but I don't want to be crushed if I get rejected...

You never know. I've had coffee with my POI a few times and have been to consortium lectures and still haven't gotten a yes or no.

What program and was the skype chat called an "interview" at any point?

It was UCSD for History/Science Studies and no it was never called an interview. The POI just thanked me for a strong application and complimented my materials and then said "It would be helpful for me just to check in with you again about your plans and projects and to see if you had any questions for me now that things have reached this stage." It's so ambiguous it's driving me insane haha

Hi @grubyczarnykot - I had a similar experience. This is how I'm thinking about it: It's obviously a *very* positive sign, but I am not taking *anything* as a certainty until I get an official acceptance. The professor I talked to spoke to me about attending visiting day, but then also acknowledged he wasn't on the admissions committee. I think the truth is anything could still happen at this point (good or bad), so it's best for us to keep our hopes a bit guarded until the official admissions statements are sent out.. That's my take, anyway.

Best of luck to you in the waiting process - it's tough!!

Thank you! I almost wish it hadn't happened and given me a too much hope, haha. Good luck to you as well! I think your take makes sense.

Yeah that's a painful situation--definitely a positive rather than a negative sign, and it might be (as is often the case with state schools) that they are trying to make sure that they offer spots to people who are relatively likely to accept them. Unfortunately there's basically no way to know for sure what's happening in a specific department's adcom this year, but you now definitely know that you're being considered as a strong candidate, so there's that! The waiting game is horrible but it'll all be over soon!

Ha, I know what you mean! Now if I don't get in, I'll probably go back and overanalyze the Skype conversation about what I did wrong

From what I’ve observed if a POI seeks you out for a recruitment type interview they will be advocating for you to the adcom. This doesn’t necessarily mean you will get in but it of course helps your chances to have someone fighting for you. I’ve also seen top candidates for a program get interviews like you described from multiple faculty members so the program can let them know how into them they are. In a case like that there is a strong chance of acceptance. On the other hand, if you’re the one who sets up the meeting with a POI it doesn’t seem to mean much as far as admissions chances. Your situation sounds very positive to me. Good luck!
