well, I'm finally home after flights to 3 different cities, and helping move a 24 ft budget truck from Detroit to Tampa to move my aging grandparents to a swanky retirement community.
In with all their crap, I managed to find a priceless 50 cent off coupon for hash browns that expired in 1988.

Update on registration woes: An amazing lady in the department added me to the class with no seats left. She apparently tried to get the class moved to a bigger room and when she couldn't, she just added me in anyway. I love my school already. My class schedule is a dream. Tuesday and Thursday 9:30-1:45 all in the same classroom.

I bet your advisor can put you in contact with current students. This whole moving thing is freaking me out to, I keep reminding myself it'll be an adventure.
It sounds exhausting. Are visas a requirement when you'll be in any country for awhile? I've only heard of them for those coming to the US.

I'm officially grad as of last Thursday. It's been a rollercoaster of emotion. I'll be getting a funded M.S. in Geology at New Mexico Tech. Hooray!
I think I'm going to be moving in July, but it's not set in stone yet. The one bad thing about New Mexico Tech is finding housing is a bit difficult as a lot of stuff is not put up online. O_O
I'm going to need to figure out how to reach out to current graduates, but that time will come near May since apparently most houses don't go on the market until then. I'm pretty anxious though! I've never lived outside the state of Texas, this is all going to be a whole new thing to me. Also New Mexico has some of the best geology in the U.S., so I'm also just pumped about that!

MarineBluePsy reacted to buttercup8d in Rejection Thread!
1st cycle for clinical psych PhD programs- rejected to all.
I applied to all top-tier programs (I was probably a bit too confident) and I had very specific interests which maybe I articulated too much in my statement. But I received positive feedback and can always improve my application for next cycle.
I was anxious during the application cycle but now I'm thinking...eh as long as I'm alive, anything is possible. Michael Jordan missed over 300 important shots. I have a great and great paying job. More importantly, I know my priorities and what I want out of life, which is an achievement in itself.
Good coping tactic: Exercise, eat healthy and take care of yourself! I've just been very focused on myself, esp. Cooking and eating organic/non-GMO food since the application cycle which is doing wonders to my stamina and energy levels ? I'm thinking of running a half marathon for the first time soon

Oh yes! I forgot the micromanaging. I don't respond very well to it. Also I tend to work exceedingly fast and so I'll often be asked to do something I've already done. Just let me do it and be happy to sit and help me refine my work at certain times. I don't actually see an issue with asking for taking vacation, because that's going to have knock on effects for the rest of the lab potentially, but it should be a courtesy thing rather than "Please sir, may I have some more".

This is my relationship with the majority of my professors. I've noticed a large increase in their respect for me after I graduated - I still bump into them at conferences and I'll get the occasional "wow you're doing great things" email, but I wouldn't consider them buds.
What I'm hoping for is an advisor who cares enough to train me right, takes time to not bullshit with me - if it's crap tell me what I can do to improve so it is no longer crap - and one who is human. I want someone to admit they make mistakes, that we all make mistakes and that mistakes are part of learning. Also someone who's not going to demand I be in the lab 7am - 10pm daily. (My current Masters advisor is awesome but he tells me I shouldn't be having days off at the minute as there's lot of work to be done. I absolutely refuse to be working 7 days a week at the minute, I work 6 as it is I refuse to do more with everything else going on.) I think i've found this in my advisor but time will tell if we work well together. I got the impression we would, out of all the advisors I met and spoke with, I think my actual one was the best fit all along. But I'm happy not to have beers or BBQs with him!

MarineBluePsy got a reaction from Danger_Zone in Time off between undergrad and grad?
I knew a gal who taught English in China and she loved it. She saved a ton of money by staying with a host family and doing inexpensive things like hiking on the weekend. Of course she was stuck there longer than expected because of the SARS outbreak, but her host family was understanding and continued to let her stay with them.
Regarding taking time off between undergrad and grad school, I think everyone should do it. When out of academia you learn a lot about yourself and really get a chance to figure out what you do and do not want to do. Many parts of the world are un/undereducated and learning to interact within it can be challenging if you're only accustomed to dealing with people as one well educated person to another.

Not necessarily. There may be a student or two ahead of him on the waitlist. If they decline, the program will reach out to your friend. I know someone who got an offer in May last year.

It's official! I just submitted my thesis to be bound and printed today!! I can't believe all this work is coming to a close!!! Once my oral defense and capstone speech are finished, I'll be done with undergrad!!

Well, I use bibliographies and data analytics to do historical research, so I'm basically a library science person. My methods are library science, but my products are historical.
I need to beef up on my data analytics skills, though. I think I'm going to take a few MOOCs this summer.

Proclaiming it to the world? Nope, just my a few of my coworkers so they aren't shocked if their workload increases in a few months, my letter writers, and one friend. A part of me wonders if I say nothing will everyone else even notice? I'm surrounded by self absorbed people.

I need to celebrate so I am here. In the past two weeks I've written 15,000 words of work - a 3000 word article, a 2000 word article and a 5000 word research proposal. It's almost done just layout and formatting to go. I cannot verbalise how freaking happy I am! I found enough words

I ended up getting into the program! I thought I was lower down on the waitlist, but my POI called me telling me that he just got another spot and that it's mine
Thank you @WillComeTrue and everyone else on this thread. I am keeping my fingers crossed for everyone!

@caleugenides Don't beat yourself up too much. You've learned something from all of this and now its time to move forward. Did School 1 give you a contract/offer letter or anything to sign indicating your acceptance? If so then I would sign it and fax it to them, then immediately send an email to all interested parties saying that you have just signed and submitted your offer and look forward to joining the team in the fall. Also briefly apologize for any confusion on your end during the decision making as it has been a stressful process and you're happy to be part of a great team. End email. No rambling. No questions. Shhhh! Then just let them do departmental stuff and wait for them to reach out to you regarding signing up for classes, orientation, moving, etc.

Or you can contact the departments main office and ask if they have any student positions. I find it odd that the admissions people didn't just direct you to the sources of these positions.

I officially accepted Texas Tech offer! I'm so happy and excited. And it's super nice out today, too bad I have to study for hydro blah. @jlt646 my friends say it doesn't look like a mullet so that's good, enough though it feels like it! My exercise routine is yoga every now and then, plus walking. I'm super un-athletic haha

All this talk about hair lead me to my own research. I'm keeping my hair braided throughout grad school cause it's easier and letting it grow. Happy to say I found a salon nearby the town I'm moving to that does braids AND has great reviews!!!
I just found a great hair stylist and was nervous to move to a predominantly white area. Not anymore!
