  1. I was accepted to UNLV for fiction last Friday via email. Don't know about poetry, but I saw on Draft that a couple of people got acceptance calls for CNF from UNLV.
  2. Rejected from UCSD...it looks like I might get rejected from literally every school that I applied to (but again, at this point, I don't really care)
  3. Count me into the 0 acceptances club too, but like I said in an earlier post, I'm basically at peace with the whole thing because now I have the opportunity to pursue other things I'm passionate about that I wouldn't have been able to do in a PhD program due to time constraints
  4. Rejected from Northwestern. To be perfectly honest, I'm gonna assume that I've been rejected from everywhere I've applied, but over the past month or so, I've become oddly at peace with not enrolling in a PhD program next fall, as it gives me a lot more time to pursue other things that I'm passionate about
  5. Weird, because I haven't heard anything from them until this financial aid thing today and I had assumed a rejection but now I don't know what to think.
  6. So, I'm very confused right now. I just got an email from the UC Irvine financial aid department saying that they received my FAFSA (I don't know why but I sent FAFSAs to all the schools I applied to even though I know PhDs are funded), but when I went to check on my grad application status it still says "under review."
  7. Berkeley reject for me as well, so that leaves 5/7 schools that I still haven't heard from.
  8. Yeah, I'm not hopeful about Berkeley at this point either Just waiting for my rejection from them. Has anyone heard from UCLA yet?
  9. I still haven't heard anything from anywhere, save for the one UT rejection...I know it's still early but I feel like if I still had a chance I would've heard from somewhere by now, so I've sort of resigned myself that perhaps a PhD is not in the cards for me (I don't plan on applying next year)
  10. Yeah, and my fit at the "higher ranked" schools I feel was better than my fit at UT anyway, but still...I guess I'm nervous because my application isn't perfect (GRE scores are average and my quant score is on the low side, my UG GPA is mediocre and I have a graduate coursework GPA that's the equivalent of 3.9-4.0 but it's from coursework I did abroad in a non-English speaking country in the native language (I'm an American) so I have no clue how adcomms will see that), I'm switching disciplines (from sociocultural anthropology to sociology) and I want to focus on ethnography/qualitative methods (which isn't that popular in sociology as far as I can tell)...but like you said, anything could happen, and I hope that I get some good news and that I don't get shut out of all 7 programs that I applied to
  11. Just got an official rejection from UT via an email telling me to check the portal, just as I expected.
  12. Sorry to be so negative, but I''ve basically given up at this point (I've heard nothing from Irvine, assumed rejection from UT and apparently CUNY is only fully funding 8 people this year) and 3/4 of the schools that are left are higher ranked than all of those that I've named, which means I don't stand a chance. The only school that's left is UCSD, but I feel like they're selective despite being lower ranked than the rest, so I doubt I'll get in there either.
  13. Whoa, that's intense. But welp, gonna cross CUNY off my list, since I can't attend any program if I'm not fully funded (and I've yet to be contacted by them or anyone else for that matter).
  14. Also I believe that Berkeley states that they only calculate the GPA from the last 2 years of undergraduate coursework + any graduate coursework an applicant might have.
  15. I feel you, re: the implied rejection from UT Austin (I applied there as well). And yeah, same, I was pretty much planning my near future based on being admitted to a PhD program and moving to a new city in the fall. @SociologyFanatic I applied to 7 schools and I haven't heard from any of them officially, but like I said above, there's an implied rejection from UT Austin since apparently acceptances went out today (congrats to those who were admitted btw), and something just tells me that my stats aren't good enough or that the adcoms don't have enough confidence in my math ability.
  16. I really feel like I won't get in anywhere now (since I have a less than stellar profile), and I have no desire to try again next year (for a lot of reasons, plus I don't feel like there's any way I can "improve" my application in any significant way, since I suspect that if I take the GRE again, I'll score just as badly on math as I did this time; I got 150). I feel at a loss about what I should do now. I know it's early but I've basically given up at this point.
  17. Thanks for posting this! I applied to a few of the same programs as you (Berkeley, Irvine and San Diego) and this gives me hope about Irvine (that they're not done interviewing/accepting people), because all I've heard on my end from them is radio silence, despite the many interviews and acceptances posted here.
  18. For GRE prep, I recommend Magoosh (though be forewarned, the math problems on Magoosh are much more involved than the ones on the actual test, though I guess it's good practice in that sense)--a 6 month subscription costed like $140 for me and I didn't even end up using it for the entire 6 months (as I started intensively studying around 3 months before the test). The ETS PowerPrep practice tests are also great, as they are very similar to the real test (though I scored a few points higher in each section on the practice test that I took the day before the real test, but I guess I can chalk that up to test anxiety). When I started studying, my quant score was in the lower 140s, and with a combo of Magoosh and PowerPrep, I managed to pull it up to exactly 150 on test day (I probably could've pulled it up more if I had the time to study even more than I already was, i.e. wasn't working full time).
  19. Also Penn State is a state school and according to what I've read on other boards here, state schools often have university-wide fellowship competitions (usually based on GRE scores) that have earlier deadlines than the usual admissions process, so they admit the fellowship nominees first (before the other people that they accept) in order to meet these deadlines.
  20. UT acceptances should be out this coming week or the next, and their rejections go out in early Feb (this is all based on all the previous UT sociology survey entries)
  21. I read a post on the history board that said that the people hearing back from state schools now are people who are being considered for university-wide fellowships (as opposed to just acceptance to the program with departamental funding), which makes me feel a whole lot better as I've applied to a few UC schools that have results appearing on the survey. TL;DR don't lose hope just yet @people who applied to state schools
  22. Was the invite from people you indicated that you wanted to work with in your SOP or POI? Or was it from the department itself (I applied to Irvine and I haven't heard anything, yet I think it's a good fit for my work)?
