GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from Asperfemme in Fasting in Grad School
I would personally advise against doing that during the semester. If you're able to clear time during spring break or the summer you could possibly do it then, but as someone who had major issues in undergrad for not eating enough one semester, I definitely caution against doing anything that could cause issues. Instead, if you drive to campus, park further away. If you eat out a lot, be more mindful of portions and what you order.
I also have problems with over-eating (though mine is a lifelong issue, not just from grad school) and I've been working on being better lately. I got a fitbit a while back and my parking pass has me park further away from campus than I used to so I'm walking more. I try to eat out with friends if I need to eat out because the friends I eat with are mindful of healthy eating so I know we'll go to a better place than fast food. If my school let me, I'd enroll in a PE for the semester so I'd be forced to exercise. Since they won't let me, I'm looking for non-academic fitness classes held at the school that work with my schedule.
Basically, there are other ways than doing a juice cleanse to get healthy and I would definitely try those before doing something that could potentially harm you and your academic progress.

My way of coping does sometimes involve hugging my kitties. Often though, I cope with the anxiety over school and not getting into any programs by playing piano. I found a copy of Fur Elise and I've never tried anything classical so I've been giving memorizing it a go. I also play DnD online every other Saturday and am improving my streaming setup so I can relaunch my Twitch channel better than ever.
Basically, I do things that are not that stressful and fun so I can be productive on the stressful work and try to relieve the stress of not knowing.

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from PonderingSoc in What are "Admin" positions at universities?
Admin positions could mean many things, but they probably meant working in the department's (or another department's) office. This would mean answering questions for students who come in, scheduling different things, sorting mail, etc. High-paying is ambiguous though, as that depends on comparing the income with other jobs in the area/of a similar level/for grad students and the area's cost of living.

Still haven't heared anything from the other schools, but I got some great feedback from the ones I got rejected from. I'm gonne keep it a bit broad, but one school told me there were others who had an actual MA degree in anthro (mine is in archaeology) and who had several years of experience in the field. The other school told me that my proposal wan't theoretically strong enough. Also understandable, since I'm new to the subject and didn't think I had to get thát specific.
I'm still a bit sad, but also kinda proud that it wasn't anything personal and that these are things I can work on! After all this is only my first try and I didn't get any help from people in academia.

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from JSnow in Living on a grad student stipend in San Francisco
I live in San Jose and have done so most of my life (undergrad and M.A. both in San Jose). There's no getting around the fact that this area is expensive, but there are ways to make it work. Cheapest for living is Gilroy, but it's a big commute to SF. However, riding the train every day would allow time for studying/working on things so that could work. Like everyone said, roommates and expecting to still pay $1000 or more a month is pretty much a universal truth here. Getting a commuter card is a better deal than a car, but you should consider how closely you live to your nearest train/bus station. Kitchen space in most apartments is small, but people also rent houses and some of them have decent kitchens, so it is possible to eat in depending on your living situation.
A breakdown of costs is hard to do because of all the factors in play. I have friends living in Oakland who are able to manage on that (or less), but I don't know their exact finances. It's probably going to be difficult and you'll need to really manage your budget, but it is doable.

Thanks @AnthropologyNRT. That helps a lot. If I don't get in this year, I know that I can come to this site and get help with applications for the next year.
Disappointment sucks, but I know I (and you) can get through it if/when it happens. We got this.

Ok, I saved them because I think they're interesting. I have officially gotten those emails from:

Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis (M.A. in Psychoanalysis or Mental Health Counseling)
USC (I want to go there for Communication, but this is for an MSW)
Harvard Extension School (no program listed)
UCF (PhD in Texts and Technology or Graduate video-game development program)
Columbia University (MA in Climate and Society)
Brandeis University (PhD's in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, and Politics)
    Yeshiva University (MSW)
UC Merced (no program listed, mentions Interdisciplinary Humanities in another email)
Notre Dame (MGA or PhDs for Peace Studies or Political Science)
University of Michigan School of Information ( MS in Information, MHI, or PhD programs)

I think that's all of them...

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from Charlsa in Online Communities
It's really hard to gauge the community's size, but if you go on Facebook group members it's currently a group of almost 3k people. They were originally pretty active on one forum, but that site got a major overhaul which caused forum activity to die. They just launched their own forums on a separate site, but most communication is happening in the facebook group. Feel free to join! It's a private group so just request access and then a moderator should approve you.
I did my research mainly with Team Hooman to understand how philanthropy can become a central group ideal (donating to charity isn't necessary for membership, but it is something hoomans praise and collectively tend to do) and how business practices help or hurt their associated community. I partnered with Team Hooman and two companies with Twitch channels and should be presenting my findings to everyone this spring.

@GreenEyedTrombonist if I get an email from Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, I will for sure open it.

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from Andrea P in GRE scores for PhD Program?
I did a terminal MA before applying for PhD programs, but in Anthropology. From what I've seen, the GRE is still important. However, I retook my GRE after a year in my M.A. program and my scores increased across the board without studying (most notably from 4.5 to 5.5 in Analytical). So give yourself a year in the Master's and then take the GRE again. Maybe study if you know what areas in each subject need the most improvement.

@fadedfigures I'm definitely one of the kids who cried on their 11th birthday because my letter never came. I know I'm a witch worthy of Hogwarts in my heart.
I'm on the last part of 1984 so I'll be moving on to Brave New World or The Prince after that's done. Still slowly making my way through Valiant, but digital books are much less engaging for me than physical versions. :/
@CharlsaIf you like YA Horror check out Broken Dolls by Tyrolin Puxty as well as its sequel Shattered Girls. I personally haven't gotten the chance to read either yet (school and work comes first, blegh), but Tyrolin's a friend and those I've spoken to about the books really enjoy them.

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from Quelq'un in Can you be admitted without an interview?
I don't know what your intended focus of study is, so this will just be generalities. In general, it's better not to assume one way or another until you get official notice from the school. If you look through the list of results from years passed, you'll notice people receive notice of admittance at any point, though you're more likely to hear from a US program before or around April 15th. This could mean you receive notice as early as January or as late as May for a PhD program at a US school. As for interviews, not all programs do interviews and not all programs that do interviews interview everyone they're considering.
In short, sit tight and work on your Plan B/C/D/etc, but don't rule out an acceptance yet.

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from therisingpage in How indicative of impending rejection are the stats in the response database?
It's my first cycle as well, but from what I understand, the answer to your question is basically "it depends."
Some programs interview all applicants they are considering for the program, in which case no interview means your chance of getting in is low. Other programs interview borderline candidates, in which case you are either a clear acceptance or a clear rejection if you don't get an interview. The situation that applies to interviews differs by program, so, though some areas of study tend to do more interviews than others, it's almost impossible to tell what type of interviews any one program is conducting.
I'm in the same boat having seen interview requests come to others who applied to the same program I did, but not receiving one myself. I've recently found out from those who received the requests that the invitation listed them as a finalist, which seems to indicate the program is interviewing all candidates they are considering for admission, but at the end of the day, I don't really know what's going to happen until I officially hear from the school. Right now I'm trying to focus on the work in front of me and making some progress on my Plan B.
    Hope this helps!

I agree. Given your scores, unless your tbd is rather low I wouldn't bother retaking. Get involved with research, plan out what conferences to attend, and start building contacts at the schools you want to attend.

Are you improving your score by a couple points or a huge bump? If you have the money, think you'll greatly improve your score, and it won't take you away from doing other things that could improve your application, go for it. I think most programs won't accept scores too close to the deadline, so check your programs to see what their guidelines and cut-offs are.
