  1. Applied to MIT NE, also anxiously waiting here. Should be soon.
  2. Okay, I received an email today from UCB's NE department asking me to consider transferring my application to the M.Eng program, which means I probably won't get into the Ph.D. program. I don't know anything about the M.Eng program and I'm pretty sure this will lead to a rejection for me, since I'm only interested in getting a phd. Quite confusing though. The email didn't mention any interview, but instead said I will very likely get admitted in the M.Eng program if I agree to transfer.
  3. Nah, I definitely have no interest in their M.Eng program so I think I'll just wait for the formal rejection. I don't know whether this is better than no news at all or just rejection, it's quite confusing actually.
  4. Hi guys, I got an email from Berkeley asking me to consider transferring my application to M.Eng, since I've already got a M.S.. So does this mean I probably won't be considered for Ph.D. program and will be rejected if I turn down this offer of M.Eng? It's not such a big deal though, and pretty much what I expected from Berkeley, MIT and UT Austin. Good luck to you all.
  5. It's Chinese new year and we're on vacation. He'd been away from research for some time and didn't answer the questions very well. At least that was how he felt. Anxiously waiting for results since then.
  6. =。=Never had an interview. Don't even know for sure what kind of questions the professors are gonna ask. And last weekend my friend blew an interview with a professor from UMich, so I'm kinda terrified now that you mention it. Then again, it's not that impending for me, since I haven't heard back from the schools.
  7. I'm also an international applicant, and from what I've read on the programs' websites, I think there are some two points on this issue. First, in most cases only domestic students are invited to recruitment days or tours. I'm not sure what these activities mean but maybe the departments give the domestic students more chances to contact the POIs. Secondly, some programs only consider domestic students for fellowship opportunities, and since fundings are rather important, chances for international students are smaller. Besides these two points I haven't seen any indication that some schools only consider international applicants after filling the spots for domestic ones, and even if they do, they won't tell you since this would lead to a steep drop in the number of international applicants in the following years. However, some programs do send out the fellowships early to the first round of applicants, and leave the others to compete for the assistantships.
  8. As long as your materials are complete and meet the requirements of graduate office, you will be admitted. The official admission letter from the graduate office might come in a day or two, so congrats!
  9. Yeah, I once read something from the admission offices' websites that said, only ask questions after reading thoroughly the info on the websites since no one wants to be bothered with questions they've already answered.
  10. Just be cool. I thought I was bothering them until my friend told me that the graduate coordinators are hired to answer our questions. Just let them do their job, and they'll forget you in a day or two, unless your application has got some serious problems.
  11. If it's posted on the application portal and the system sends you a notification by email, you'll probably get that email during working hours or a little bit longer after that, since the system might take some time to process that order. This also applies to situations where the email is sent by a staff member of the graduate office or departmental coordinator since they usually don't work overtime. As for POI, things could be totally different, but they usually give you a day or two to respond to their emails. So taking some time off during the weekends should be good, and that's what I'm gonna do. Now I only check my emails after waking up in the morning.
  12. Chinese here, so I can't help you on this one. Just some opinions of mine on this: I don't think they gonna put too much pressure on a Canadian citizen, but maybe your visa could take more time to be approved since the recent terrorist attack in Quebec. Recent orders from Trump administration seem to reform the system so as to provide more visas to educated and skilled intellectuals, so visas for students shouldn't be affected that much.
  13. Applied for Nuclear Engineering program, never heard anything from them. UCB ranks 5th in nuclear engineering but they have really high standards for graduate students, so I'm expecting much the same as I don't expect much from MIT.
  14. Ah I was looking through the app portals and found that one of the schools had made the decision on my application. A day later I found out that it was an admission. The official notification came one more day later. As for the second one, I had just woken up and got the email, since I was on the other side of the planet and the emails always came during nighttime. Now the first thing I do everyday after waking up is check the emails on my phone. Pretty exciting.
  15. As long as the official copy and the unofficial copy you uploaded for admission review are identical, you should be okay. Only one out of nine schools that I applied to asked for official transcripts to be mailed to their office before the deadline, but this issue should be program specific. So if the admission coordinator says it's okay, you should be fine. Don't select yourself out of the competition, there's still a lot of time.
  16. Thx. I had the same feeling about the number of schools I applied earlier. One of my friends applied to 18 schools so that he could be close to his wife since they are both applying. And then I realized that most programs in my field had just started reviewing the materials so 9 is sufficient. Don't give up, I won't give up, Don't give up, no no no
  17. So I got an acception with funds on Monday, the first week I anticipated most programs start to send out admissions, which was absolutely a good start. The following weeks are going to be crucial.
  18. Back in December, when I had just submitted all the applications and had nothing to do but wait, I checked the apartments around all the universities I applied to. And this was repeated time to time when I was really frustrated by the long wait. I'd say it's normal, and I found out that the students apartments around some schools were really nice at a reasonable price. This makes me expect life in the US even more.
  19. Interviews should be program specific, and I'm sure the programs I apply to have different processes. Now I'm more like 'oh no please give me an interview'. And my family are starting to ask me whether there's any news in the morning when I'm still in bed.
  20. Gee I didn't hear from the programs for a month before I received my first admission without an interview. Yeah just like that, no word on funding. And since then I have waited another month while seeing more results from other applicants show up in the results search section. I haven't got any interview invitations or emails from the programs, and the application portals are just quiet as outer space. I keep telling me that more results will come in the following two weeks and here I am checking the emails and portals as usual. Even my parents know what offers are and they don't even speak English.
  21. The application websites are usually maintained by the offices of graduate and are not updated unless they receive confirmations from the programs. However, while many programs inform the applicants through email of the decisions, some would simply update the status in the application websites. The formal way to determine how you'll hear from the schools is to check the specifications on their websites, both the ones of the graduate office and the departments. If you can't find any information on this, you can also check the results from previous years in the result search section of this forum. You should be able to find how and when the programs inform the applications.
  22. I received my first admission without interview about two weeks ago, but I'm not applying to CS programs. This issue should be program specific, and you should consult previous students for accurate information. Other than that, there's little we can do about interview invitations unless your POI already showed interest in recruiting you. Also waiting anxiously here. Most programs I apply to should make their decisions in the following days. Checking results from previous years in the results search section of this site is a good way to determine when you'll hear from the schools. Good luck!
  23. Ha I'm enjoying home for almost a week now. A close relative to my family went away a few days ago and we've been busy with the funeral, keeping me off these stuffs for some time. Now I'm wondering again whether I'm gonna hear back from the programs since it's been so long after the first response. Still, more wait ahead.
  24. I received my first admission ten days ago without an interview, and I didn't get a reply from my POI. But it might be different for different programs. Besides, I don't think it's wise to contact professors directly for interviews unless he/she has replied to you with a positive answer.
  25. It doesn't seem possible to just leave it all behind. I even check my mailbox on the train home. But it's still exciting to be on vacation.
