  1. Unless your two remaining schools are ones you'd pass up the one you received the acceptance to for, I'd personally save the money and forego them. If the acceptance that you got is for your dream school, then why bother! They could have been safety net schools in case you didn't get your top choice, but you did, so congrats!
  2. One year a long time ago, there were penguins who didn't wear hats when swimming. This made their mothers livid. "Unacceptable!" Frightened, they screamed, "Bears!" Nobody seemed convinced so instead of going swimming they tried juggling. Their mothers tried everything they thought would teach her a skill. However, she couldn't even make oatmeal without disastrous results. So, the penguins gathered money (obviously) trying to purchase a bear. Towering over them, a grizzly beast danced, devouring all bears with such ferocity that even God enjoyed it. Afterwards, God congratulated the penguins and applauded them. "You did it!" Suddenly, the grizzly beast started dancing vigorously. There was an acromantula nearby. It challenged the preconception that magical mushrooms were magical. Sparkling, the magical mushrooms were spreading throughout town. Nobody with pyromania thought grilled cheese would spontaneously erupt into nine identical squirrels! Nevertheless, the penguins elucidated the benefits of sparkling water from Iceland. Suddenly, Iceland exclaimed, "Enough!!! No more penguins. Kill all of the arcades on Monday because King Arthur suffered from sphenisciphobia." Tragically, everyone forgot lasers cure bug madness, meaning none of them stripped the violet beast of his powerful jaw bones. So while some arms spouted Kool-aid, others chopped nuts. This phenomenon halted commerce. Together twenty-five yellow dragons danced sporadically inebriating all anger gods, while academics drank champagne profusely. Who were they? Snotty undergrads eating free Tetrahydrocannabinol Chlorate. Homicidal kittens emerged from congressional hearings purring rhythmic improvised melodies, infuriating the associate professors who stripped them intermittently of all credentials. The incredulous kittens meowed like dragons farts. Except Bruno, who mewed like

I'm returning to Canada from Japan for a masters, and I've been accepted at McGill, which was my top choice. Unfortunately, while I am billingual, neither of those languages is French. I was in French immersion up until grade 5, then was homeschooled for about 3 years, then took Japanese as my second language requirement in high school. My French is super rusty, though I can read and understand it pretty well. I've been crash coursing myself with DuoLingo and it's coming back slowly but surely, though I have serious doubts about it being at a working proficiency by September. How have Anglophone McGill/Concordia/Montreal/etc University students found living and working in Montreal? I feel like I'll manage enough French to get by in daily life, but I'm more worried about finding work. I'm very much willing to learn, but will employers be willing to take me on even if I'm not fluent? I'm fairly fluent in Japanese, and I'm not sure what the Japanese scene is like in Montreal. Are there any employment possibilities for billingual speakers of Asian languages in areas like tourism and such? I used to live in Vancouver where lots of Asian tourists come so speaking an Asian language was always an asset, but Montreal is a whole other world for me. Any advice or personal experiences would be super appreciated!
  5. Fingers crossed! If they gave it to me, it'd seal the deal with them. The cherry on the top of an already very attractive cake.
  6. Unfortunately, I'm just entering their MA program right now, so funding may or may not happen! I was told that they give out 10 entrance awards of $5000 to their top 10 applicants, but I'm not sure how big the program is or sure what my odds are. Fingers crossed for a tiny program! I'm sorry to hear that! I hope you get an even better acceptance soon!
  7. I was worried about the exact opposite of this, so this is actually kind of heartening to read. I've lost almost 70lbs in the last year, and I'm hoping to lose about another 10 more, and I've been worrying about putting back on weight as going back to school will be a massive lifestyle change from working full time like I have been. I've gotten myself to a point where I only eat when I'm hungry and am able to prevent myself from eating out of boredom, so I'm glad to know this won't be an issue in the fall. But if anyone is losing weight and not wanting to, please take time to eat and take care of yourselves!
  8. My one and only brush with fame is getting a picture with Willam Belli after a drag show in Honolulu. She is very tall in person and smells really good.
  9. I've heard that too, so I'm currently pros and consing the two. McGill is winning by a landslide, but money may ultimately trump if I get in and get funding (though the cost difference may disappear with the extra I'd have to pay to fly back and forth for holidays and such, and Alberta's a bit more expensive.) I understand the desire to get away, that's why I moved to Vancouver and then to Japan, but thanks to a major illness in my immediate family a few years ago, I feel like I'd like to be a bit closer for a while. I mean, I'd still be two hours away, but it's a lot closer than I've been for close to 10 years now and Montreal really is winning my heart, too.
  10. I'm pretty much decided on McGill, but I'll see if Alberta offers me some money. I'm from Ottawa, and I've been living abroad for the last 5 years, so I'd prefer Montreal since I'd be able to see my family more often, not have to fly back and forth, etc. Plus, Montreal just looks like a really fun city, and my POI at McGill sounds really great, so I'd like to work with her. Yeah, the Vancouver weather is hard to beat, you really won't find any better in Canada.
  11. That's why I'm sitting here kind of confused. All the acceptances to my program in past years were somewhere around January 25, while McGill's, which I've already heard from, weren't previously until March or April. I think I should probably just stop compulsively checking the results page.
  12. Man, that sucks. I think our acceptance rates can be about the same depending on which school and what program you're applying to, but I haven't heard from too many people who didn't get in anywhere. I'm seeing lots of really qualified people in the results pages who are getting turned down from every school, which just really shouldn't be happening. Obviously, people who aren't qualified for the programs they're applying to are going to get turned down, but if you meet or even exceed every school's requirements, to not get into a single one just blows my mind. I've got my fingers crossed for you! More than 7 for English, but second language education (my field) does have much fewer, yes. You guys down south have a lot more options available to you, and I suppose competition would be higher with a bigger population. Still crazy to see people applying to ten schools and not getting into a single one. I'm praying for all of you!
  13. It seems like Alberta acceptances for my program went out earlier in past years, like end of January, but nothing has been posted this year at all, so I assume nothing has gone out yet for whatever reason. That's weird about the technical glitch, good thing you got it sorted out! Which school are you leaning towards? Yeah, I loved UBC, it was an amazing school. Gorgeous surrounding nature (UBC-V is on a penninsula in the ocean, so you've got ocean views on three sides with the mountains behind Vancouver also clearly visible), great weather if you don't mind rainy winters, Vancouver's a fantastic city with lots of stuff to do and friendly people, the professors were excellent for the most part, the academic faculties were well equipped, lots of academic and non-academic clubs to join, etc., I could go on forever. Montreal or Ottawa are going to be rough cities to reacclimatize myself to Canada in.
  14. Thank you! It seems like McGill acceptances are going out pretty steadily, so I'm sure you'll hear back soon. Alberta is anyone's guess, apparently. Also, I see that you applied to UBC, which was where I did my undergrad. It's a gorgeous school, I highly recommend it. I'd go back if they had the field of study I wanted, but they don't, so.
  15. Americans seem to apply to a lot of schools. I'm Canadian and I don't know anyone who applied to more than five. I personally applied to three (McGill, Alberta, Carleton), though I was close to doing a fourth and fifth (Toronto and SFU). With applications being $100-200 each and me being a pauper preparing to haul their entire life back across the Pacific, costs were kind of a big factor in my decision making.
  16. Two for three on acceptances so far with offers from McGill and Carleton in Canada! Still waiting on the University of Alberta, but no one seems to have gotten anything yet according to the results search. Anyone get any word from them?
  17. Sushi. Which is kinda weird when you live in Japan, but whatevs.
  18. Thank you! It was my long shot dream school, didn't think I'd get in due to not having majored or minored in education, but 5 years of experience, a persuasive SOI and what I assume were strong LORs goes a long way, apparently!
  19. I can't speak for PhD studies, but I've been accepted by two MA programs in fields (Education) unrelated to my undergraduate studies (Asian Area Studies). After finishing my undergrad, I moved abroad to Asia to teach for 5 years and wound up developing an interest in education while here. When I asked the schools I was applying to what my odds were as someone applying to an education program with precisely zero undergraduate academic experience, I was told that a strong SOI and glowing LORs would certainly help, so maybe focus on those? Make friends with profs who can write you excellent LORs, try to pad your resume with work experience or extra curricular activity related to English lit. Also, some schools have a Master's you can do in three years instead of two where the first year is made up completely of prerequisites to get you up to speed for Master's studies, so perhaps look into those? I have faith in you! I didn't think I'd get accepted to my first choice of school because of the shift in study, but here I am. Also, don't worry too much about your sophmore grades. I did pretty awful in my first two years, but, while I can't speak for American schools, most Canadian ones at least only look at your GPA from your last two years of study. Good luck!

Reviving this thread for 2017! Anyone looking for a roommate to live somewhere near McGill? I'm leaning towards Le Plateau or Cote-des-Neiges.
  21. Any Canadians around? I got accepted to McGill's Second Language Education MA program and would be excited to meet anyone else going! Still waiting on Alberta, but I'll probably accept McGill's offer.
  22. I've been wondering about the same thing as I prepare for reentering school. When I finished my undergrad, I didn't have any, but I've acquired two small ones on my arms between then and now. I feel like normalizing tattoos in academia is important, but I also don't want to shoot myself in the foot. Probably best to cover them up for important stuff, or until you know it's okay to show them.
