  1. I'm not sure the mexican food will be the same (I tried some while I was there), but a girl can dream! I'm currently having a hard time finding an affordable place to rent that has all of the amenities I'm looking for, so I can imagine that it will be a bit pricey. It is kind of crazy how expensive the rents are for such a small place!
  2. I am from a city that is bigger than State College, but it is still nothing like NYC or what I consider "real" big cities. I think it will be interesting to figure out where I will grocery shop now, what restaurants I like (I'm a vegetarian), etc. I am in a huge city in terms of land and everything is really spread out and there are a lot of different neighborhoods. Although I don't think we are a top culinary destination, we do have a TON of restaurants all over the place, which I will miss. I will also miss "mexican" food or the Florida equivalent anyway! Penn State had a ton of excellent researchers in my field of interest (more specific than just biobehavioral health). And when I talked to the students and my future adviser and met them in person it just seemed like a great place to be! Everyone was so nice and helpful.
  3. Hi, Mark! What department are you joining? I'll be joining the BBH department. I considered joining a program in Minnesota, so I guess compared to that it's not so cold! We moved to Florida when I was a kid, so it will definitely take some getting used to. I've quickly discovered that a lot of houses don't have central AC, which was a surprise. I am guessing I'm probably just in for a lot of little surprises due to the change in environment! Where will you be moving from?
  4. Hello, I would like to kick off the PSU thread for 2018! Threads from previous years seem to be good sources of info for housing and other information about State College. My fiance and I will be moving to State College from Florida this coming fall, and, personally, I would love to hear some thoughts on moving to a cold climate, living in State College, and just generally meet some other (future) grad students! Looking forward to meeting some of you!
  5. Typically, I address them the same way they signed the email. If they always put "Dr." or just their initials, I will keep up with the formality. (I'm not sure about whether just initials is the least formal, but it seems confusing to me.)
  6. I think that schools usually follow up with an email if they can't get you on the phone. It is unlikely that they would leave no voicemail and also not try to contact you some other way... Personally, I would try to be patient.
  7. OMG... I clicked the link it is was so painful to read through all of that! I think that it is important to get creative with the essays just to stand out a bit, but fortunately/unfortunately creative writing isn't really part of STEM training. But, in a highly competitive application process, any extra skills really seem to help! *shrugs*
  8. Same, feel free to message me! I think I'll be having skype interviews next week or the week after.
  9. I also was invited to interview at UNCC, but couldn't make the date. I've ended up setting up skype interviews instead. I would be interested to know how you end up liking it once you visit!
  10. Did they happen to tell you when they will be done? Their website said people should be notified by late Dec./early Jan.... unless they're sending them in waves to see who responds and then filling the spots with backups?
  11. I just received an interview invite from Pittsburgh's Biological and Health Psychology program, in case anyone applied to them!
  12. Not sure if it is any help, but I received an interview invite for Bio/Health Psych track at Pittsburgh. My POIs are PG and AM.
  13. I think this will depend on a few things, including the field. Some fields don't really appear to interview and instead accept students and then have recruitment events. Most of my applications were due in December for both neuroscience, psychology, and interdepartmental programs, but I had one application due yesterday (and also one in early November that I just heard from a week or two ago). I think that to be competitive and not miss out on good applicants, the late due date programs will have to begin reviewing applications right away and make decisions. Last year, I had applications due in December and didn't hear until almost the end of January about my interviews in February. It just depends on the school and when they actually start reviewing the applications and some places seem to wait until about two weeks out from interview dates to start sending notifications. But all of it is highly variable, unfortunately. I hope this helps. Not sure what field you're in.
  14. Hi All, Does anyone know if the NSIDP neuro program at UCLA has sent out all invites? I saw a few go out last week, but not sure if that is it. I know they have two weekends, so you would think there would be more than a few invited students. Of course, I don't know how many of the prospective students use this site... Thanks!
  15. I am also still trying to figure this out. I am waiting to book a flight for another interview based on whether I am invited to this one!
  16. I had a skype interview with KE at UGA (BBS track) and she wanted me to come for in-person interview, but I had a scheduling conflict. I am waiting to hear from Pittsburgh's biological and health psych track (been in contact with a professor off an on in the last few weeks); POIs are AM and PG (going on sabbatical). I don't know if it is of interest in this thread, but I was invited to CUNY's Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience interview. However, they rotate, so I wouldn't enter directly into a lab. UNCC's Health Psych program invited me to interview and my POIs are JB and TL. Edit: For PSU's BBH program, my POI is JGE.
  17. I emailed admissions for NSIDP/UCLA neuro and it sounds like they have two interview weekends: the first weekend and last weekend in February. I don't want to push my luck with asking them too many questions, but does anyone know if the post on the results survey saying that interviews are the 3-4 of February is true? That would be the first weekend, I'm assuming. The reason I ask is that I already have an interview and would fly home on the 3rd, but, if I was lucky and got the UCLA interview, I could fly straight there... I also have one school that does not abide by the April 15th deadline and I interview there in two weeks, so the second UCLA interview date may be too late for me Also, does anyone know when we should expect to hear about interviews? I saw a couple of posts in the results survey from December, but also saw that most of us shouldn't expect results until after the winter break.
  18. I applied to the psychology Ph.D program last year and was rejected from that but accepted for MAPSS with, I think, a 1/2 scholarship, so it would have still been outrageously expensive. After talking to some of the students I met during interviews, they did admit that MAPSS students just aren't viewed the same and are somewhat like second-class students. I think I made the right decision in not attending and I have a few interviews lined up for this year so *fingers crossed* I also decided not to reapply to the Ph.D program. I got the feeling from students and faculty that they were a bit snobbish and very aware that the University of Chicago is relatively prestigious right now.
  19. Hi everyone... I am part neuro/part health psychology. So far, I have not heard from any of my purely neuro choices... but do have an interview for the Biobehavioral Health program at PSU (heard officially this morning) and Clinical and Translational Science program at Mayo Clinic (heard on Monday). I also have a skype interview (heard last night) with a PI from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences track at UGA. Good luck everyone! Applied (8/9): Penn State (BioBehavioral Health), Mayo Clinic (Biomedical Sciences, Clinical and Translational Science), University of Michigan (Neuroscience -- direct), UCLA (NSIDP), University of Pittsburgh (Psychology, Biological & Health Psychology), University of Georgia (Psychology, Behavioral and Brain Sciences), CUNY (Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience), UNCC (Health Psychology), UC Merced (Psychology, Health Psychology) Interviews (2.5/9): Penn State (BioBehavioral Health), Mayo Clinic (Biomedical Sciences, Clinical and Translational Science), University of Georgia (Psychology, Behavioral and Brain Sciences) -- skype interview Accepted (0/9): TBD Rejected (0/9): TBD
  20. Hi Everyone, It looks like I will be reapplying to graduate schools next year. Some of the feedback I have gotten from my letter writers is that I may want to try to apply to less top tier programs next time, but I was wondering what is the best way to determine what schools are middle tier or safety schools? Smaller, less well-known schools looked like they typically (not always) had less promised funding for Ph.D. students, which is why I didn't apply to some of the smaller programs for F17. Does anyone has any tips for figuring out safer bets when it comes to reapplying? Do you normally just look at the school's ranking for the type of program (i.e. biology, psychology etc.)? At the end of the day, I know it is supposed to be about research fit, but perhaps less prestigious programs will be less competitive?
  21. This makes sense, but if I need to miss a Friday and Monday of lectures or lab time, won't someone notice my absence?
