  1. I always loved three day weekends but this is a particular weekend that I'm not enjoying as much as I should, especially knowing that no one will send out any decisions until Tuesday at least...

scary thing is that leaves only 6 business days in Feb

That's true - February is so short...

  2. Probably a little early - if the deadline was February 1st, they probably won't be reviewing it until at least two weeks later (in case if they are still waiting for applicants' supplemental materials like GRE scores & official hard copy transcripts to arrive, which sometimes arrive after electronic application deadline dates). I applied to some programs that were due on February 1st, but I don't expect to hear back for a while at least (but I am also hoping that these programs' admission committee will go through their review process quickly too... ).
  3. Let's just say I bid my farewell to a large portion of my hard-earned savings after I completed all my applications... I think I would have saved SO MUCH money if all those schools I applied to didn't request hard-copies of official transcripts from the respective schools (and most of them required transcripts from EVERY school attended, including those I didn't receive a degree, so I had to send transcripts from community colleges where I took coursework, etc - so annoying...).
  4. Yum bacon Though I almost never eat it nowadays since I'm trying to watch my health haha. I might get some backlash for saying this, but I'm not a fan of Jimmy Johns... I don't care how super fast their delivery, etc. might be, I just don't like their sandwiches. None of their sandwiches I've tried don't taste good at all (to me, at least). EDIT: And speaking of Jimmy Johns, there happens to be a Jimmy Johns ad on the forum homepage. I guess they won't give up until I change my mind about their sandwiches lol.
  5. I always try to wear bright clothes or have a flashing light clipped on my shirt while I go for a night run/walk, etc (I even got a flashing light for my dog to wear while walking her in the night haha). Crud, that's super scary!! was everything okay afterwards (i.e. did he decide to leave you alone after you got to work)?
  6. The month of February is creeping by painfully slowly...

Depending on where in the world you're at, Feb is half way through!

True haha. Oh man, it's so nerve wracking to think that it could be any day now that I'll hear back from my programs...

Yep - around December, right after I sent in all my applications, I was like "I can't wait to see my status updated" "I can't wait to hear back" then around Jan - it dawned on me that I could be hearing back, and that it may not be good news.. after that.. my daily rounds of checking my email/  online application status was like a thriller movie.. :(

  7. No kidding, this stuff makes me super mad too! Also, some drivers exiting their driveways just keep lurching forward while only looking at one direction to see if it's safe for them to turn right, and not even realizing that there's a pedestrian trying to cross from the driver's right side! LOOK BOTH WAYS! I always want to yell at these aggressive drivers (drivers who don't like stopping for pedestrians) "don't you know how to yield to pedestrians?!?!?" or "What is your problem?!?!", but according to various news reports some of these road rage animals won't even hesitate to shoot you if they get angry enough - it's so sad that innocent people have been killed because of these road rage animals who should never have gotten their licenses in the first place While I'm walking on the campus I definitely had a few students run into me because they were so captivated by their phones. I yelled at a few of them "watch where you are going!" but of course it's unlikely they'll change their habits. And @rheya19 great job showing that stupid girl the rule of the road. Doesn't she even know that speeding through a school zone (especially a crosswalk) is a very serious violation? I'd love to see a cop pulling over someone like that and handing her a very fat ticket.
  8. Sorry about the accidental downvotes socapp2017 - I upvoted your posts again. I didn't realize you were talking about johnallen in your post, not the OP. And I agree with your recommendations if multiple admissions are offered. And draco malfoy, congrats on your admission offer! From socapp's recommendations, I'd say talking to current PhD students will be extremely valuable - they can provide some great feedback from students' perspective (life as a student with the current stipends they receive, etc.).
  9. Neither have I received any admission results yet, apart from just a couple rejections out of many programs I applied to so far. I feel you! I often pray that if they don't like my application as much I wish they'd reject me sooner than later so that I can get rid of my "false hopes" faster. Good luck to you all!
  10. I'm continuing to apply for jobs and hoping to have something lined up soon... though I will admit that doing a PhD will make me a lot happier than as an employee for these jobs I'm applying to... (not that these jobs will be terrible, but I really do wanna do a PhD... ) EDIT: Not sure why I was downvoted for this, but okay...
  11. Drinking hot tea every day helps me a lot. I've been able to combat colds within a week or a week and a half by doing this. And as others have suggested, drink plenty of water too.
  12. This happened to me several times already this week. The light is green for pedestrian crossing, and as we are crossing, some idiotic drivers who are turning right try to swerve around us, or almost hit us, because they are spacing out/distracted/just aggressive/in hurry or for whatever reason. A few days ago, a driver was turning right as I was crossing, but I tend to have a fast walking pace, so he lurched to a stop reluctantly with a sour face (almost hit me), and I raised my arms in air and gave him a "what's your problem, dude?!?" look, and he commences to yell all sorts of cursewords at me through his window. I wanted to confront him but instead I just gave him an angry look and moved on because you never know how dangerous road-rage morons are if you confront them. I mean, seriously? Are you really that stupid? Yield to the pedestrians: HELLO! It's the LAW! Please don't tell me I'm the only one on the Grad Cafe angry about this happening all too often... I just feel extremely fortunate that I haven't yet been hit by moronic drivers who could care less about pedestrians crossing lawfully. Though I hope I'm not jinxing it by posting this... Also, whenever this happens, where are the cops?? I NEVER see cops around when stuff like this happens ... it would be incredibly satisfying to me if a cop saw what was happening and immediately confront these drivers.
  13. Agree - I initially found a few episodes funny but it got old...
  14. Energy drinks (i.e. monster drink, etc). I never understood why so many of my college friends drank them copiously (I personally have never tried any Monster drinks, and I don't really plan to).
  15. Whenever I get an interview offer, my excitement reaches for the farthest galaxies, but it plummets back to earth 30 seconds later, because I also know that an interview is still not a 100% admission guarantee... this is really killing me... :(

Haha thanks DBear. Yeah the possibility of "false hopes" with interviews can be truly agonizing... but at the same time I guess admission possibilities do go up!

    3. DBear

      DBear

Definitely higher admission possibilities with interview than without! Congrats on getting interviews, and good luck!

Thank you! :D Hope you are getting some great interviews/possible admits too!!

  16. I never called professors by their first name until I've been working with them for a little while (sometimes they'll insist just to call them by their first name during interviews, etc). But just to be safe, I'd kept addressing them as "Dr." or "Professor" until you are officially accepted and some time passes after your program starts.
  17. Wow, congrats!! That's awesome. But man, 40 deg. Celsius is super hot...
