Acceptance for Fall 2019 and Regarding Funding
Ternwild replied to Anita Dhara's topic in Waiting it Out
Most PhD programs are funded. But, the person you should be asking is the department. Send them an email with a question regarding funding. -
Appeal. Get on the phone with people (never underestimate the power of verbal, non-digital conversation) and appeal the decision and see if they will at least consider you for conditional admission. Most graduate schools have conditional admission programs. It may slow you down a year or semester, but at least you'll get into your 1st-pick program.

That's fair. Have you followed the guidelines for writing an SOP that are written on the forums? -

I think you're confused about what "Decisions, Decisions" means and this comment is best put in "waiting it out", but I suggest contacting the department for an update. You guys have clearly been over using the results page to have conversations that are not what the results page was designed for. The first page alone shows an apparent confusion that that is what the forums are for. And though I admit you finally came to using it, you've ruined the results page for future applicants who want to see time frames of acceptances and the stats of those excepted and not long conversations about your worries over the program. That is, again, what the forum is for. We all get worried and nervous and I'll accept that most people aren't aware of the forum, but now that you know, please stop and encourage them to, as well. ? To answer your question, email or call the department and see if they have a better understanding of when you can expect to hear back. For every person who has heard back, probably a hundred more haven't. According to the history of acceptances/rejections from the results page--which I literally had to go through nine pages of conversation to get to last year's results--you can likely expect to hear by the end of the week, if they keep with the same time frame as last year.

You are 100% wrong with this assumption. I'd argue that over 70% of applicants are still undergraduates. In fact, it is common place for people to apply to graduate schools within their first semester of their final year in UG. Additionally, the further away from UG you get, the more focused on your career your application becomes, instead of your UG work. There's no way for us to know what could of been the deciding factor, but it definitely isn't the fact that you're still an undergrad. Try emailing or calling the program to get more information from them, in hopes of better understanding what you need to do to improve on your application, next cycle.

I guess we don't have a lot of people who feel comfortable talking about their shortcomings for the sake of helping themselves or others from making the same mistake, I see. xD

You need to speak to all of them right away. Most of them have clauses for pregnancy and childbirth. This is not a conversation you should really be having with randos on the internet. Childbirth is a serious and career changing event and you need to communicate with these programs and see who accommodates you the best. You need to consider how much time will need to recover, whether they have child care facilities, whether you have childcare alternatives, whether you need to work from home on some of your PhD work in order to care for the new born, etc.. Please get on the phone with these programs, immediately, and inform them of your situation. How well they can accommodate your health and well-being needs to be a deciding factor in your decision making, well above the academic prowess of a program.

At this point in the application cycle, you absolutely need to assume you're rejected from all programs and start applying to different jobs. Don't hang around waiting for miracle, last-minute acceptances. I fell into that trap, once, and was unemployed for 7 months. It's difficult to accept defeat, but we should always assume defeat and plan for it. If I'm good at anything, it's having a realistic understanding of rejection. xD

Don't give up! I'm all to familiar with that feeling and perseverance is key. Plenty of us here that have been through that. You're not alone =)

Keep your head up. If I can serve as anything, allow me to serve as an example (even if not a great one) of perseverance. -

Yes, I can imagine you do. And we don't have a lot of time to consider them. Good luck. -
What is the average salary of a phd student

The answer is simple: D.C. will require you to breath the same air as the likes of Donald "Why Don't People Worship Me?" Trump and Philadelphia is a literal garbage fire of a city. ? Maybe it is a difficult answer after all. Live in a garbage fire or near one. ? Real head scratcher.

Importance of prestige for a masters with intent for a PhD
Ternwild replied to Johnvcm's topic in Decisions, Decisions
The short and skinny: at our age, we need to focus on what is less of a burden on our lives and our family. Choose the university that fits you best that is less of a financial burden overall, with emphasis on financial burden being the deciding factor. It is extremely ambitious to want to be a professor considering how overwhelmingly competitive the field is. Your best bet is to try to get in as a adjunct professor at the university you did your PhD in. -

Email communication from the department: good or bad?
Ternwild replied to literalturtle's topic in Waiting it Out
Their response is a generic one designed to shoo away all the emails asking for more information. Clearly, they cannot answer the specific questions of every person who emails them. So, they do blanket emails. You can email the POI and see if they can help, but it seems the department is not interested in digging further for you. What the content of the email means is that whether you're accepted or rejected, everyone will know by mid March. My experience with rejection means I'm aware that you're likely rejected and it is safe to be presumed, but some universities don't like to commit to rejecting people until they know they've made all their numbers (of acceptances). Just contact the POI. If they can't help you, I would take it as an assumption of rejection (like my signature shows I've done, in this exact situation).
