  1. Where all is everyone applying? In previous years threads, people posted the schools they're applying to but it doesn't seem like people have done that this year in this thread!
  2. That actually may be the only reason I’d mention it! You went to the interview weekend last time and had a great experience and felt the fit was strong, etc. I think this is a good point!
  3. I wouldn’t address it! I reapplied to multiple programs last cycle (though I had not interviewed the first time) and I think I actually ended up with interviews at all of them the second time around and offers from two. If you’re applying to the same POI, they probably remember you, but I would just highlight new experiences/ skills you’ve gained since the last app cycle rather than mentioning anything about the interview process.
  4. It really just kind of depends on your strength as an applicant. They can vouch for you, but if your POI isn’t interested or there’s some other barrier (GPA/ GRE) there’s probably not much they can do. Though, I’m sure it depends on a lot of other factors specific to the department! I’m happy to share my experience with this particular situation if you want to DM me
  5. I was lackluster in undergrad (3.30 GPA) and took two years off doing a non-psychology related job before attending an MA program then this PhD app cycle I got interviews at 5/7 Clinical programs I applied to and got 2 offers. DM me if you wanna chat!
  6. Just wanted to add to the positivity about less than competitive undergrad GPAs! I had a 3.30 in undergrad overall and only like a 3.5 for my last two years. I just had a terrible freshman year (like 2.5 GPA) and was relatively average beyond that year (like... my best semester ever in undergrad was a 3.75). But I got serious after I graduated and did a master’s to compensate for my not great undergrad. I’m finishing my master’s with a 4.0 and I got two clinical PhD offers (had 5 interviews and only applied to a total of 7 schools). That being said, I got a ton of posters and picked up a couple of publications in my master’s so that certainly helped me too. Since you’re early enough in your undergrad to make a difference, like others above me said, just work hard in your final two years and honors is even better! And research, research, research.
  7. I did two Skype interviews and two in person interviews. I think the "feel" of them was pretty similar as far as the actual interviews, but there are certainly drawbacks. You don't get the "feel" of the department, how faculty/grad student relations are, etc. Essentially, you miss out on the interpersonal aspect of interview weekend which is arguably a pretty big part. That being said, one of the programs I did a Skype interview for gave me an offer so it's not impossible to get one. I would say you just really have to use your Skype interview time to demonstrate your interpersonal skills as well as the goodness of your fit with their program.

  17. I actually have a friend that applied to work with someone, but they ended up deciding to retire after initially thinking they were taking a student. A new faculty member saw my friend’s app, interviewed him, and offered him a spot. So it isn’t impossible!
  18. None of my letter writers have submitted their letters for me and the deadline is tomorrow... I have to laugh.
  19. So there's a private university in my state that has a Masters of Mental Health Counseling program. I have two friends who are in the program. They've told me some things that they're being taught that seems really questionable and not based in science. For example: one professor told the students that he treated a patient with Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple personalities) and when the patient changed personalities their eye color changed.... Like this is clearly untrue. This is not the only questionable occurrence. My friends are afraid to contradict their professors. Is there a way to report this? Or for someone to address this with the department?
  20. I got into Northern Arizona who (it seems from their website) has reworked their MA program to be more like a pre-doctoral masters. It looks like they've tried to restructure to better prepare students for PhD programs, which is why I applied there (also because Flagstaff is a really cool town). They also offer at least partial funding which is a definite plus.
  21. My fiancè finished his bachelors in statistics at 29 and began a PhD program at 30. He ended up leaving the program after two or three years because he landed his dream job in industry (sports related). Anyway, at 37 (about to be 38) he is considering going back to get his Ph.D. in the next year or two. In the psychology program where I currently work, there is a guy in his 40s who just started the program like two years ago. So in short, you're definitely not too old to pursue a doctoral degree!
