  1. I'm hoping it's just because KR and JBS are slow with their emails. And, maybe, just maybe, that the blizzard warning and closing of campus (and MSP airport!) caused them to stop writing emails today. I'm telling myself every story I can.
  2. If I screwed up, then I screwed up, but at this point, I have zero hope. It's a feeling that should pass, but it's one that hits hard and fast.
  3. The Vikings lost last night, there's a literal blizzard going on right now and I'm stuck at work, and my boyfriend found out he won't make it home from Germany for at least another month. It's just one of those days that makes you think that everything is going to crash this week. Everything will be okay, though. I'm still alive and that's always something to be thankful for.
  4. I have had coffee with her a few times, been to consortium meetings with her, and she was my undergrad advisor's advisor. I wouldn't have done it if I didn't talk with her quite a bit these past few months.
  5. I'm hoping last night's game isn't the start of a bad week. Vikings lost, there's a blizzard going on and I'm at work, and I only applied to Minnesota. This could very well be a horrible week for me.
  6. Called my PoI and they are still reviewing applications other than the ones that were told to apply for or were nominated for university wide scholarships. I will hopefully know this week.
  7. Mine still says awaiting program decision. Congrats!
  8. I honestly think my stress will go DOWN if I get in. In undergrad, I was used to working 16 hour days on campus between taking 18 credit hours and being President of the Student Government Association my senior year (VP junior year). I thrive on research, writing, classes, reading, and long hours. This gap year has been brutal so far. I'm antsy.
  9. For the next 3 hours or so, I don't need to hit F5. Football is on and my heart can only take so much.
  10. Thankfully football is on today or I would be going crazy. Okay, I'm going crazy, but not because of grad applications. My Vikes are in the NFC Championship.
  11. Sounds more like they want the question or instructions for the writing sample. They want to know what you were responding to.
  12. I always go back to one from a few years ago when I need a laugh. I need to find it again, but it says "It's cold and they're mean" about the University of Minnesota.
  13. Not in your field, but I just looked at my writing sample after reading through this. I have one footnote with question marks instead of the date because I should have looked for a date later. I couldn't remember at the time of writing the paper if it was 1588 or 1589. In another part, I have a whole phrase left untranslated in the body of the paper. The rest of it looks like this: ..."writing in English." 1 I really hope they see that the rest is correct, the topic is good, and that my translations are done well. I had reworked part of my paper before I submitted it and it just looks like I oopsed on that part. 1 Footnote or Ibid., The original reads:" ...writing in Early Modern Dutch"
  14. Had 'the talk' today with boyfriend about what happens if I don't get accepted to the history program. Law school apps for the U aren't due until July, so that's plan B. I would be perfectly happy doing sports contract law and sports player management. I took the LSATs last year and scored very high, enough that I meet all the requirements to get into law school with no problems. I'm much less stressed with having a logical backup plan.
  15. I don't mean to offend and you may actually think what I am about to say is funny depending on your humor, but I had an image pop in my head of someone waking up from surgery and immediately hitting the F5 key to refresh results just in case something happened while you were under. Good luck with your surgery and I hope you find out before you go in!
  16. There is one sub-section of colonial history in which I really think there is a need for growth- New Netherland. Many people get filtered out of that one because they need early modern Dutch training and that's a language that is lacking in many programs. Their history, though, influenced Jefferson and the other founders, though, so it's something that someone needs to look at more.
  17. I'm outside your field, but I think a lot of people in humanities have this same issue. We are taught early on to not get too far into one topic so we don't limit ourselves before we are required to limit our interests. I do early modern Dutch history. I have always done early modern Dutch history and will always do early modern Dutch history. 90% of my work has been in contracts and constitutions, not because I am necessarily the most interested in them, but because they were good practice to learn translation (contracts and constitutions have repetitive language). I want to do travel journals, but I think I may be stuck with contracts and constitutions. My DREAM topic would be baseball history, but that is so far out of my realm that it will only ever be relegated to a fun hobby.
  18. Funny story. There was a guy in one of my smaller classes (for the major- we all knew each other) that thought he would be funny and request to be called "Grand Master J" when this question came around. I still don't know his real name. He will forever be "Grand Master J."
  19. Anecdotally, I was able to afford ONE application. $300 with the GRE is a lot when you are supporting yourself and a family. That's a car payment and insurance, 1/3 of my rent, or groceries and gas for the month. I went without sending anyone Christmas presents this past year because Christmas money became GRE/App money. Thankfully, my family understood.
  20. They told a few applicants this week because they were nominated for an extra university fellowship. I didn't get that, but we shall see next week if I get accepted.
  21. Knowing when dates are is just as hard. I know the only program I applied to will be releasing acceptances next week and rejections the week after.
  22. I've been thinking about the order of phone calls I will make: boyfriend, undergrad advisor, parents in that order. Then I would order mugs/tshirts for all of them. And then drink all the wine.
  23. For some reason, the first thing I thought of was the scene in The Red Violin with the girl in Maoist China during the Cultural Revolution. I think your area of interest is very intriguing!
  24. I haven't heard anything from Minnesota, but others have heard that results will be out next week. I'm crossing everything crossable, though it's just hit me that my whole life path could change next week. I need a drink.
  25. Best food I have ever had was street food in Rome. I may have gained 10 One of the first things I do when I go to a new European city is go to the grocery store, and you are right, there is no comparison between Italian and Dutch markets. There are something I love in the Dutch markets- Chocomel, Sinas Lite, the AH Branded Energy Drinks, Zout en Ei botterham. But, honestly, the best thing I have ever tasted was chestnuts I bought off a homeless guy in Rome roasted in a trashcan. The worst food I have ever had was in London, but that was coming off two weeks in Berlin, so everything tasted bland.
