Personally NO. lol! I would just apply for clinical psychology or counseling psychology programs if this is important to u!

Licensing gets dicey.... unless there's an internship/practicum in your PhD program you would not receive a license from APA to practice. However, you would still be a Psychologist just not have the license to practice and further bill as a psychologist. The most important aspect about being licensed is billing

Do you happen to have a masters in clinical counseling? I have a masters in counseling (and licensure) and will be attending a PhD program in a non-clinical area. So if push comes to shove or I find myself wanting to balance academic/clinical I can always do private practice/still be in the clinical realm. However, without a masters and subsequent license, its something to think about. Do you want spend your career diagnosing, doing therapy, writing treatment plans... or not? Without a license/accrediting body to answer to you cant to any of that work, period. I would do some self reflection and figure out what it is that you want to do, what would bring you joy, and a route/path should illuminate itself to you

Thank you for replying! And thanks for your perspective, it's great to hear, and comforting. I'll be my POI's first doc student

Is it better for your POI to be at the beginning or at the end?

A career as a developmental psychologist...
cashewmilk replied to cashewmilk's topic in Psychology Forum
Hey! So I recently left an interview and I made sure to ask career trajectories and what current grad students hope to do with their PhD. Many of them said academia/tenure track professor route. While others are involved in consultation, research firm, corporate, program development... it seems rather limitless! My background is clinical counseling so if push comes to shove for me, being involved in practice or applied is always an option .. the field appears open!- 3 replies

Developmental folks, What is your plan career wise with a Ph.D in Developmental Psychology? The field is wide/vast and I know there's no formal licensure like clinical/counseling folks (depending on program) I've always leaned towards academia and applied settings, but im curious to know what others plan to do!

Its common to an extent. The POI is probably trying to assess/clarify fit before extending a formal offer to you.

This must be extremely difficult/frustrating, and I hate that you are encountering these emotions simultaneously. Sometimes we enter seasons in life that we just don't understand, when all is said and done, I hope you receive some clarity in all of this. I wish you the best, and please don't call it quits forever. You have a lot to offer the field. Take some time, take care of you, get clarity, and if it feels right, get back in the game. Thanks for all you have attributed to the grad cafe community!

Happy Friday! has anyone heard anything back from DePaul Clinical programs?
