Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
indigopierogy replied to kpietromica's topic in Geography Forum
I am dying for a Penn State SOMETHING. My family is from Pennsylvania and they all want me to move back into the area. Anytime I'm on the phone with them they keep bugging me about it and I want to scream.- 93 replies

Oh my gosh, I figured out what I did. I made 2 accounts. So yes, I did get a confirmation of receipt, but it was in an email I wasn't looking at. Crisis averted, everyone!
-
I received an acceptance letter through snail mail, the letter was basically just a single sheet of paper saying, "congrats!". When I got the envelope, because of the small size of it I was positive it was a rejection, after all, don't they usually come with letters to sign and send back for accepting the offer?? Any other paper acceptance I've gotten in the past has been after an informal email acceptance and has been basically a welcome packet.

Okay, so this might be a website glitch or completely normal, I don't know, but I'm really panicked. My GRFP application that I am really really sure was successfully submitted on the application day and all of my references got in on time has disappeared from the portal. Now, it says that my application is incomplete and when I click to "view my application", it says that I never uploaded any documents and no reference letters were submitted either. I even have a screenshot of one of my professors "confirmed" submissions for the reference letter. Is this normal because they're reviewing them or is it a glitch? Does anyone have any experience with this because I feel like I could throw up!!!

Berkeley would definitely, imo be the better choice of the two, even though the programs aren't the same. I don't want it to seem like I'm trash talking the program itself, but the University is having some serious issues when it comes to funding that makes it very stressful for Humanities students.- 41 replies

I did register to go and I am supposed to be presenting at a session. I wish I could drive because I love driving, especially if its just highway, but it wouldn't be worth it in this situation. I'm thinking I'm going to pretend to go until I hear back and accept a school and then just be like, "lol, sorry....". I'll just have to talk it over with my advisor and see what she says. If she's really disappointed with me, I'll probably be guilted into running up my credit card (which I don't want to do before a move!).

I didn't apply for funding through AAG, I didn't realize that that was an option. There's a Graduate Student Organization that offers reimbursement but its again, reimbursement, you have to pay out of pocket and it is only up to $500. The plane ticket is about $300 in itself, driving is not an option (it's a 20-hour drive). The school that I'm at genuinely doesn't offer much, not even for professors.

I know. I am struggling to make ends meet as a self-funded MA student on the island because the rent is so high. I only am able to survive because of my SO's income. I just can't wait to move to someplace where we can afford a two bedroom for half the price of what we pay now. Its sticker shock but because of how cheap the rest of the country is! Even 'cities' like Bloomington. Downtown, half the price.
-
Yes, 100% there with you! I got accepted at Indiana U at Bloomington; a program I kinda forgot I applied to and now I am so excited for it. My top choice was Penn State and the longer they take to get back to me, the less and less I seem to even care if I get in there or not. I've also been apartment shopping online and oh my g*d. I pay $1670/mo split in half with my significant other for my apartment right now for a ONE bedroom. That's like a mansion in Indiana.

Is anyone going to the AAG conference in April? I had a paper accepted, but I'm really really low on funds and I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to afford to go now. However, I don't know if that looks really bad to get accepted and not go; especially when I've been applying to schools with that on my CV. My current school doesn't pay for conferences at all, they only do reimbursements, so I have to pay for my flight and hotel/Airbnb out of pocket and wait however long for them to pay me back. What are your thoughts on going?

Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
indigopierogy replied to kpietromica's topic in Geography Forum
I'm waiting on LSU, Penn State, the University of Kentucky (2 programs; Geography I am supposed to email them on Friday to see if I got in; probs didn't!), West Virginia and UDel. They're all Geography programs except for the other program at U Kentucky, which is WGSS. I'm going out of my mind thinking about this! Mostly because I'd like to get into more than one school, or I'd like to know if it's just the one school so I can accept and look for apartments and be done with it. I want the whole thing to be over!- 93 replies

Cool! I'm at Stony Brook's MA WGSS program now. I take all the same classes as PhD students, as I am literally the only MA student in the program. Let me know if you have any questions about the program or Long Island, I'm more than happy to answer them!- 41 replies

@toear5 and @fvcr have you heard from any other programs? It doesn't seem like we applied to any of the same places, but I'm still interested in knowing what your journeys are like! I am probably not getting into either of the U Kentucky programs I applied for, one of my recommenders never submitted his letter! lol I don't want to mark them off in red yet just because I'm still holding out a tiny bit of hope.- 41 replies

Sorry, to clarify, my field training is Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies (my undergrad and MA) but I am looking to get a Ph.D. in Geography. LSU offers a Geography Ph.D. through their Anthro/Geography dept. However, the Geography forum is kind of dead on this site, so I thought I would check out what anthro people are saying, and in terms of LSU, it wasn't much! So I got a little worried! In terms of WGSS programs or Geography programs, there are certain programs that everyone applies to (for example, lots of people apply to Penn State in Geography, it is v. renowned for climatology/physical geography and in WGSS lots of people apply to University of Washington). This could have something to do with the number of programs though rather than the status of them. Or maybe when there are only 14 WGSS Ph.D. granting institutions, they HAVE to have some level of name recognition within the community. What is your subfield in anthropology?

There wasn't anyone in *particular* I wanted to work with, but I also am looking for programs that study race in the United States, my focus is on white supremacist organizations using ethnographic methods. I'd prefer to work above the Mason-Dixon Line, but I didn't find a ton of programs that appealed, considering many focus on archeology or other kinds of sociocultural phenomena. However, for a Ph.D. program I want to make sure that if I do get accepted, I'm choosing a program that not only will give me the kind of research experience that I want and need but also the kind of prestige of "Oh yeah, they went to get their Ph.D. at a school that is actually good at x, y or z" rather than "Huh, this school isn't actually the greatest for these reasons". I don't know if that's reasonable or not.

Yup, I did, the Ph.D. program. It's basically my dream program! I saw that you did as well! You'll have to let me know when you get a response. If you want to direct message about POIs or State College (my significant other's hometown so we visit a lot!) you can totally hmu- 93 replies

Hi everybody, So I'm not an anthropologist, I'm a wannabe geographer, but I applied to Louisiana State University's Geography and Anthropology Dept's Ph.D. program. Has anyone heard of this program or applied to it? I'm not seeing anybody saying they applied and its made me worried I wasted that application money!

So we have an idea of when some schools acceptances/rejections come out... Did anyone apply to West Virginia University or know when their acceptances/rejections roll out? Similarly, University of Kentucky? I applied to both programs early/mid January. More interested in WVU, as that was the earliest application of the two. Also: sorry if anyone did say they applied to these schools and I missed it!

@bumbleblu So my top choice right now is Penn State's Geography Program, they have a combined Ph.D. with WGSS, so it's essentially like getting two Ph.D.s. I'm desperate to get in there, especially because my research is in the state of Pennsylvania, and I absolutely love the state (weird saying that since I grew up there and hated it growing up). Plus, Penn State really opens doors for you in the job market (so does having 2 degrees). State College is actually also a really nice place to live, my significant other is from there, and I really like the rural/college town feel of it. But Bloomington also seems like a State College kind of town and its suuupper cheap. So honestly, if I only get into Bloomington, I won't be mad. After living on Long Island, you really come to appreciate the finer things in life, like WiFi that works (WiFi here is garbage) and one-bedroom apartments under 1500! Also, some of the Geography programs deadlines aren't until Feb 1. Its like, when am I going to hear back from those guys?? I was hoping to hear back from everyone by mid-February at the latest.- 41 replies
