Less Competitive Schools
Aspire_to_Be replied to MassSLPwannabe's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
First thing, did you graduate under a communication sciences and disorders or related major? You need to have the prerequisites completed before starting graduate school. Second, Boston schools are indeed competitive. Your GPA isn’t actually that bad! You have to consider other areas of the application however such as GRE scores, letters of rec., statement, etc. These speak significantly about you as an individual so don’t undervalue yourself. Third, I encourage you to put your best foot forward and apply to “reach schools”. You just never know where you’ll get in. That said, schools in rural areas, or non metropolitan, are considered to be less competitive. Try using the edfind search engine via the official ASHA website. A quick google search will yield it. Finally, remember, don't undervalue yourself. Speak to professors, make sure your application materials are top notch and really investigate schools and their criterias! -
Hey all, I will be visiting the UT - Austin campus this Wednesday and will be speaking to someone and discuss the program and possibly get a tour as well. I do have some questions in mind but if anyone wanted to ask anything at all (if not asked already), please let me know and I’ll ask them and post back here what they say ?
-
I’m largely unfamiliar with NC, I’m only going by photos haha, sorry about that. Raleigh/Durham; NC central university! Which school are you currently attending if it’s alright to ask?
-
Ah I see. That’s a little tougher to answer. As far as I’ve been told, you’re able to go wherever you want especially if it’s a reputable location (CA, NY, TX, CT). I’m actually visiting CA, TX and NC this upcoming week so I’m going to be asking what the transition is like going from a grad program in a rural area to working in a more city like region. I’ll be sure to put up a post or comment here regarding that matter once I finish my visits.
-
Mm, well you should first know that metropolitan locations (CA, NY) will be more competitive. That said, I don’t believe there are necessarily any safety schools in either of these regions. I live in NY so I’m very familiar with the procedures here. Safety schools are largely located in more rural areas such as NC (to my knowledge). Your overall stats are quite attractive, just be sure to do well in your post-Bach program and you’ll be fine there. Aside from that, you have to put your best foot forward with the GRE exam, it’s a major factor for considering students. Recommendation letters help significantly as well so be sure your professors really know you well and continue that professional relationship with them. Finally, I strongly feel that your statement of purpose defines your application, it’s the part of your app where you demonstrate your personality, ability to write on a graduate level and let the admissions committee know why YOU are a grand fit. At any rate, google ASHA EdFind. You will be able to search up ASHA-accredited schools (make sure they’re accredited) and find some best statistics on them (admitted students’ average GRE scores, average GPAs, number of admitted students per year, what schools offer in terms of research, programs, etc., and other things). Compare your stats with these, it’s a good indicator of how you’d fare when applying. Ah and one last thing; don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. There are schools I’ve been accepted to I had 0 hope of getting into and somehow I made it in so don’t underestimate your abilities and always apply for reach schools as well.

Undergrad Progression
Aspire_to_Be replied to Penelopepie's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Well, I’d have to say that it is pretty critical to maintain a high GPA for this major. To the best of my knowledge, a majority of schools really want to see GPAs of 3 or above, especially competitive ones. I don’t think that’s to say you can’t get in with something lower than a 3 (2.8 at worst) as you have other pieces of your application to speak for you. Even so, it is quite difficult to be competitive with a low GPA, some professors may seem harsh but they do know what they’re talking about. I remember taking anatomy class and my professor basically said to drop out of the class if you failed the first exam (retake the class). I have seen plenty of individuals get in with GPAs of 3.0-3.4 but as I said you also have to consider GRE scores, letters of recommendation, etc. Finally, programs can set criterias of passing and progression grades. For my program, if you don’t get at least a B for some classes, you’re unable to take higher level classes, which honestly makes sense. Things only get more challenging as you progress, if you’re struggling with lower level classes, it’s an indicator that you need to step back for a second and gather some thoughts and decisions of what to work on or do next. -
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for your posts! Do you happen to know anything about the NYC DoE funding program? I’d like to apply for it in order to avoid a mountain of debt with Columbia but am cautious over their commitment requirements (work for them 2 years per year if funding). As much as I’ve loved seeing children being helped within schools, I’d really like to expand my knowledge in working within medical settings/mix of adults and children so I’m hoping there are still changes of doing medical based SLP regardless of possibly working with the DoE for 4 years

I second this question! One of my bigger concerns in attending the program ? -
Should I Consider No News, Good News?

3 schools? That’s quite brave; at any rate, I suggest reaching them some next week to inquire about your application statuses. That would be the most you can do for the moment.- 5 replies

Edit: Just got off a waitlist today and was accepted; it is possible - hang in there, everyone!

I probably lean toward physics more. Well, I’m actually taking physics (of musical sound) right now and it isn’t too bad. It isn’t meant to be a full-on physics course so there aren’t any calculations to make. It’s straight up concepts and logic. For exams, it’s based on homework (practice) questions and explaining the concept/idea. As it was said before also, physics (of sound particularly) is super related to our field. If you’ve taken a speech/hearing science course or will be taking one soon, it’ll be quite simplified when you’re dealing with sound waves and related material.

A quick question for those who have been accepted without funding; what steps will you be taking to pay off tuition? I was accepted into the bilingual-based Masters but it is super pricy. The only option for me from what it seems is to apply to the DoE's funding program. However I had wanted to extend my experiences and work wirh adult populations/within medical settings. That said, the DoE funding program requires applications to commit to 2 years of service per year of funding which is largely deterrent given my circumstance.

Very reassuring, especially the last part. I greatly appreciate* your reply!

Hello, thank you for your post here. In regard to tuition, from what I’ve read, funding and financial aid are usually paired with an acceptance email and can be found on be admissions portal. Aside from that, is there any particular way of getting funding for the program? My biggest deterrent from CU is the fact that it comes out to more than 100k. Additionally, I’m aware that the NYC DoE is able to find you by applying to their program but their contract requires you to work for them 2 years per every year of funding. i haven’t yet decided whether I wish I do medical or school based SLP but have leaned more toward ganinong medical experience as the transition from medical to school based SLP is significantly easier than the other way around. So the DoE contract is concerning in terms of funding.

An Agreement to Help Out Later On
Aspire_to_Be replied to Aspire_to_Be's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I’ll also be on the subreddit later on; I’ve seen and am currently experiencing great struggle with deciding what program to choose, which is most beneficial, what they have best prowess in, and what is more sensible in terms of outcome and expenses. -
Hey all, it’s been a crazy couple of months now waiting for grad schools to get back to us but I definitely want to bring a little something up. I’ve noticed that it’s mostly rare for current grad students to come and comment on our threads regarding what their programs are like and whatnot and although I’m sure hey are white busy, it would have been very nice to have been given info and answers to our questions over programs and admissions processes. That said, I think it would be nice for some of us (any of us haha) to commit to coming back here when the time of application responses and interview invitations arrived next cycle (2020). It would help many undergrad students I’m sure. I’m still in the process of receiving responses myself but I’d like to say that I will be coming back here next cycle to help however I can with the program I choose. Hope we can all help someone out in this difficult journey!

Second this; I have a few acceptances and would like to see what I may be able to do in regard to funding. Tuition is super expensive within our field and is sort of deterrent when determing which program to attend.
