Decision Deadline before April 15..HELP!
Aspire_to_Be replied to curlyq177's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Thank you so much! Is there any official wording on the April 15 resolution date? (A Link perhaps?) I appreciate it a ton!! -
Hey all, I hope I'm not duplicating a previous thread but I wanted to bring up tuition and how to pay off for it. Actually, I'd like us all to share what we can do to pay off tuition so any question regarding that is welcome. That said, I recently received an admission offer along with a generous scholarship for one of my grad school choices. Now I wanted to know if it would be possible to negotiate or discuss with other programs about funding opportunities. Not that I am ungrateful about being accepted to other programs but I would like to give myself a good chance to carefully select a school I feel would suit me while not having to go into large debt. In addition, is it the norm to wait until you have accepted an offer of admission to inquire about TA'ing or anything similar? Or is it something that should be asked about before making a decision?

UT Austin - Student Opinions
Aspire_to_Be replied to slptobe97's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Gonna tag along in this thread if that’s alright! Would any current student also be able to describe if the program is geared more toward educational SLP or are there possibilities for medical placements as well? -
For the most part, I would say it depended on school stats although a lot of them were schools I took a “chance” with. Before discussing my grad school choices, I’ll list some of my stats to let people know it’s a holistic process that is throughly looked into. 3.6 undergraduate GPA, 3.9 post-Bach GPA, 490V/510Q/5.0AW on GRE I’d say my weakness here were my GRE scores. A lot of the more prestigious schools such as BU, MGH, UT Austin, etc. accept students with higher average GRE scores (think 156V/154Q/4.5AW) However one of my professors advised me to take a shot at these “reach schools” and put my best foot forward with my resume and statement of purpose. Lo and behold, I’ve been receiving good news from schools, some have waitlisted me and thus far, only 1 rejection. At any rate, I applied to a total of 14 schools, which I now believe was a little too much but I was a little scared of not getting in anywhere. I would say having strong writing and organization abilities (statement) significantly affects how graduate committees view oh as an applicant. In addition, my professors got to know me very well so I believe my letters were strong as well. All in all, these seriously helped balance the GRE scores I got!

Decision Deadline before April 15..HELP!
Aspire_to_Be replied to curlyq177's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hey there! Can you share where you saw that list of schools? I have a school only giving me 14 days to decide -
Would anyone happen to have a source or link for the April 15 resolution deadline? I want to be sure or universal before sending an email out. unless not all programs participate in it which period be unfortunate.
-
Should I email them regardless about it? And yes mine said that. Would it mean something?
-
Got an acceptance here myself! Although it seems the schools allows only 14 days for a student to decide to enroll or not. Isn’t it universal that all SLP programs give time until April 15? (According to the CAA)

I'm out of state, NYC to be exact. I am enthralled by their dedication to providing bilingual-based experiences and also love the area.

Hey there. Let me first say that whatever you do, don’t underestimate yourself. Your GPA isn’t bad at all. If you’re able to bring it up somehow, I recommend you do it though. If not, then try your best for everything else. That means the GRE and extra curricular activities. While you have some nice things under your belt, try adding on whatever you can for extra curriculars while you’re taking your gap year. Now for the GRE, I highly suggest you prepare for it. That will give you great leverage where your GPA may be an issue. At the same time, don’t think GPA and GRE grades determine everything. As others have said, your statement will speak volumes. My GRE scores weren’t the greatest but my GPA helped a lot and my statement is, according to multiple people, unique and “stands out”. I’ll personally admit that I was scared at first of not getting in and so applied to various schools. You have to be able to expand your horizons. I’m from NYC and have applied across the US. So far I’ve gotten 2 acceptances, 1 rejection and 2 waitlists. It’s an anxious time right now but super exciting at the same time. Good luck and do your very best!

Did anyone happen to interview over the weeekend? (or are these routine interviews dates maybe?) Also, who did you guys happen to interview with?
-
Hi all! Hope everyone has been doing well during these anxious but exciting times. I recently got waitlisted for NYMC’s program and was asked if I wanted to be put on the waitlist or not. I definitely want to but was wondering if I should include an additional thank you note or essay explaining why I’m a good fit for the program to help make my case. NYMC is one of my top choices, so I’m hoping to increase my chances of being admitted off the waitlist. For anyone who has been on a waitlist or knows someone who has, any advice is much appreciated!

GWU'S SLP Prerequisites

@samiamslp Hey there! Pardon the late reply, not sure why I never received any notifications for your post but thank you so much! I'll apply there then regardless. I had emailed the department but the answers were a little too vague! I have finished a draft of my statement and I totally agree with you. There is so much to say but so little room to say it all. I highly suggest asking professors and excellent writers to look over your statement to help you cut it down. I personally tend to write a lot of fluff or unnecessary things so it helped me immensely! @bibliophile222 I had contacted the department but their answer was super vague. Here is the email actually... "I am ---, a member of the SLP admissions committee at GW. It appears to me that you have all of the courses required for admission. Our own post-bacc program includes a course in basic clinical procedures (SPHR 4119) which prepares students to begin clinical practicum. If you could find such a course, even on line, it would help you when you begin the program. I hope this information is helpful." I don't wish to appear obnoxious (I emailed them a couple times prior) so I sorta stopped asking questions but even then it's super confusing as I can't find anything similar in scope anywhere else. I'm thinking of applying regardless and see where it leads me! -
Hey all, hope everyone's Fall has been going very well! Has anyone attended GWU's (or is applying) MA in SLP? I'm having some difficulty determining what type of course is eligible to fulfill their SPHR 4119 prerequisite requirement. I'm attending a college in NYC but from what it appears I don't think my college offers that course or anything similar in scope. I'd appreciate any help or suggestions regarding this matter. Thank you!!

Hey all, tomorrow I planned to speak to my adviser about grad schools and my GRE scores however before I even do that, I wanted to read some thoughts on my scores and current academic standing to see if it is even worth retaking it. My undergrad GPA is 3.6 and as a second BA student right now I am at a 4.0 (prerequisites). My GRE score was as follows; VERBAL: 149, QUANT: 153, WRITING: 5.0 I was so distraught by my verbal score and am wondering if I should retake it now... I can't imagine pulling off a 5 again on the writing and am sort of applying to some rather high ranked/mixed schools. They are the following... Queens College, Hunter College, Brooklyn College, NY Medical College, Northwestern University, Indiana University, University of Texas - Austin and Boston University. I have looked into their average GRE scores as well as GPA scores. I would say I lean toward below average for all sections save for writing. Please do let me know what y'all think about my situation. I'm torn between retaking the GRE or not!

What in the world. Those aren’t good stats? So what would be considered “good stats”?

Job options pre-grad school
Aspire_to_Be replied to Aspire_to_Be's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Greatly appreciate the information! I will look extensively into this immediately following taking the GREs. This could be just what I need to boost my grad school application, and definitely an excellent way to get experience working with the ASD population. Much thanks for the information! @birdy-bear ---------------------------------------------- Thank you for the solid advice, I'm going to seek out the school principal where I shadow at (she's hard to find!) and inquire about possibilities of TA'ing. I think this would be the current best route for me, provided they allow me to do part time (unfortunately I take classes Tues/Thurs which may interfere with scheduling). @Daniel998 ------------------------------------------------ As we grow closer to the summer I'm going to definitely check those out for my city. I'll also look through the school I shadow at and my university. Thank you for your advice! @snoves ------------------------------------------------- Do you happen to be doing part-time by any chance? I am going to try to find the school principal tomorrow (today; she's always running around busy!) and inquire as to whether there may be TA possibilities for me. I'm unable to do Tues/Thurs due to school but am hoping it is still possible. @slpgirl898 ------------------------------------------------- The consensus here has definitely been to apply for paraprofessional work. I'm going to check in tomorrow (today) with the principal of the school I shadow at to see if there may be any possible TA opportunities. Fingers crossed haha. Thank you! @hopefulslp1- 10 replies

Minimum grade for ASHA requirements
Aspire_to_Be replied to speech12345's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I believe the requirement for most universities is a B-, I would check into each program individually through their website however. They definitely state their requirements; next best thing would be to email the directors or someone who can provide the information. -

For the literacy tutor and day camp positions, did you happen to run into those on a website or it's something you inquired at a local school? I am having major difficulties looking for an after school program via Indeed/Google. I would imagine I can't simply go up to any public school and ask if there are tutoring or after school programs available... although I am actually going to try that when I go into the school I shadow at next time. Do let me know, thank you for your response! @snoves ---------------------------- I searched extensively on Indeed and Google for "lab assistant", "research assistant", "lab/research aide" positions but cannot find anything at all. Is there a website I may use to help me with that or should I send a personal email to universities and organizations inquiring about that? I recently took A&P for Speech/Language and something related to TBI would actually be fascinating! (Much thanks for your reply) @hmbanana93- 10 replies
