PHILOSOPHY M.A. ACCEPTANCE/REJECTION 2018
incredulous_stare replied to buffystrong's topic in Philosophy
Very true. Really is a case-by-case basis, though the offer that is funded will almost always be the more "safe" bet. However, I tend to consider factors involving back-up plans as well. We all know how hard the job market for philosophy is. So part of my thinking was "If I were go to Oxford and eventually pursue a non-academic career, then I would be much better off than if I had gone to a publicly unknown (though good reputation within phil) school for a terminal MA". Additionally, I thought Oxford would leave me better off (though maybe by not that much) with respect to getting a job in philosophy, which I want to maximize my chances for in any way I can (besides doing anything immoral). This is a really interesting discussion though! I know that there may be some who disagree with my decision, even if they had all the information I have.- 222 replies

incredulous_stare replied to SlumberingTrout's topic in Philosophy
I've accepted Oxford's offer for their MSt in Philosophical Theology! -
Undergraduate grades, the writing sample, and AOS
incredulous_stare replied to jc177's topic in Philosophy
I agree as well! I was accepted for a masters program in philosophical theology at Oxford despite getting an A- in the phil theology course I took at my institution (though it was during my sophomore year before I took a significant amount of philosophy courses) -
PHILOSOPHY M.A. ACCEPTANCE/REJECTION 2018
incredulous_stare replied to buffystrong's topic in Philosophy
I myself faced a decision between an MSt in phil theology at Oxford and the MA at Northern Illinois. While I think "don't go unless funded" rule is generally a good rule, I believe there are exceptions. For a number of factors I've decided to go for the MSt. DM if you wanna talk more!- 222 replies

Officially declined NIU's offer.

Declined Georgia State and will probably decline NIU within the next week

I see that someone reported a rejection from UVA. Did anyone else hear back from them recently?

Master's Admissions 2018 (MA, MTS, ThM or Mdiv)
incredulous_stare replied to newbietheologian's topic in Religion
Thanks!! -
I was just accepted earlier today for Oxford's MSt in Philosophical Theology! Definitely a niche area so I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't anyone else here who applied for this program, but the program regularly places its graduates in top 20 PGR PhD programs so I'm pretty stoked that I was accepted. Probably will accept the offer, given the lack of success in PhD applications this cycle

Master's Admissions 2018 (MA, MTS, ThM or Mdiv)

Though rejected for their MPhil, I was accepted for Oxford's MSt in Philosophical Theology. I was torn between which of the two I'd prefer, so it's kind of nice that they ended up making the decision for me. Super stoked. Will probably end up going there! -
Master's Admissions 2018 (MA, MTS, ThM or Mdiv)

I applied mid-January. The deadline for both applications was Jan 19th! How about you? I think it says that they typically make decisions 6-8 weeks after the deadline. -

Anybody here apply to Oxford's MPhil or MSt program in Philosophical Theology? I applied to both but have yet to hear from either. -
No worries man haha. This is why written communication is not the best

Just this morning

Solicited responses I received: CUNY: Rejected UVA: "unlikely though far from impossible" that theyd offer me a spot. They don't do a waitlist Amherst: "with any luck you'll know my status by end of the week". Da freak does 'with any luck' mean. Should I expect a rejection? UT Austin: "neither accepted nor waitlisted at this time". Omg just tell me I'm rejected lol UCSB: made some preliminary decisions, still making decisions till early April Arizona: made first offers already, "if waitlisted, you will receive an email within two weeks" Rutgers: Rejected, of course Havent heard back from UNC or Cornell

Thanks for the encouragement! Think I lean towards NIU, though i waiting to hear from the masters programs in philosophical theology at oxford, as well as some more PhD programs

Is there anybody else coming from a small liberal arts, undergrad institution and having a rough app cycle? Seems like it's very hard to get into top 20 PGR ranked PhD programs with this background unless your writing sample is just phenomenal. It's a little frustrating going through this, even though I knew beforehand most people from my institution weren't able to get into those programs right after undergrad. I'm sure this doesn't have much to do with their ability or preparedness (they were able to get into places like Rutgers, Notre Dame, CUNY and UVA after doing a masters). I am grateful for my offers from MA programs like NIU and Georgia State , but I can't help but think that where I go for undergrad plays a significant role in my applications to PhD programs, perhaps more than it ought.

Deciding between Tufts and other MA programs
incredulous_stare replied to downwardabsolute's topic in Philosophy
If there is anything that it is for masters programs, surely it'd be the BPhil at Oxford. You'd get the chance to interact with some of the top scholars in many subfields within philosophy, and though I'm not one to grant credibility to prestige on its own, I would not underestimate at all how much prestige can open doors for you. It's not just Oxford, but the Bphil degree in particular has that prestige. You may be able to get into at top 10-15 after attending NIU, though if you take a look at their placement record, I think it's likely that the BPhil more frequently places their students in those types of programs. Not to take away anything from NIU though, it's clearly one of the best terminal programs in the US. I think that the BPhil is just that much better the US masters programs -
Anybody else who hasn't heard back from Columbia?
-
Bummer... I guess I'll be receiving a similar email soon
-
I haven't received it either
-
Fwiw, it's likely that I will decline their offer.

Deciding between Tufts and other MA programs
incredulous_stare replied to downwardabsolute's topic in Philosophy
If I could afford it, I would totally go for the BPhil at Oxford over NIU. As good as NIU's placement record is, I think the BPhil is the better choice in the long run. It'll make better your prospects of getting into a good doctoral program later on, which will help job prospects, and so on... Plus, if you end up pursuing an non-academic career instead, it's obvious that the Bphil at Oxford would benefit you a lot more. It could even just warrant a more careful look on your resume. At any rate, I definitely think you should consider doing the Bphil over NIU more than considering to choose Tufts over either. -
@prtrbd Do you know when is ND's weekend for prospective students?

I hope it works out well for both of us! What are your AOIs?
