  1. Hello all I'm writing you as a second year of the UPENN MFA program. As you know, universities have begun moving classes into the online format. We're due to graduate in May and our thesis, the shows we have planned, and all of our work have come to a halt. We were asked to vacate our studios and not to return to campus for the rest of the semester. I'm reaching out to ask what other MFA programs around the country are doing. -how does your program plan to move your education forward -how does your program plan to compensate you for time and education lost -what demands are you making of your program -what plans have you made to continue your work Best wishes jz
  2. they're also practically crumbling, the current students are suing the school.
  3. tbh post bacc is for people who need help getting into a mfa program or because people don't want mfa programs. i did the ssp at vcu to help prepare for an mfa but it was expensive to move to a whole new city for a short period of time (as well as the residency was expensive). canbrook is a great school, and if you're not happy with their program either do the post bacc to prepare for a more competitive program, do the post bacc and wait on the mfa, or accept neither and reply to programs next year.
  4. just my two cents, i don't think the price tag as well as the institutional and physical crumbling of the school is worth 120k in debt even if you peer group are super accomplished. even if you come out of school very 'successful'... you can get a good deal from VERY good schools with a smaller price tag
  5. thanks so much!!! sent an email about applying and getting some information but i haven't gotten any reply so! idk. i also spelled fulbright wrong so RIP for me
  6. tbh i think these programs are similar, if there's no one professor, student, facility, or location that's pulling you I would let the price tag decide.
  7. columbia is a great program but hunter is also great and less expensive. my goal with my mfa was to graduate debt free. it's great to go to an ivy league school but is 130,000$ of debt worth it? i'm not sure.

    Chicago vs NY

i live in ny currently and it's not for me (i'm moving to philly for my mfa) i would seriously consider chicago, i think it's a better environment for emerging artists and ny is better for mid to late career artists who can afford a good studio practice and all. chicago is cheaper, has tons of accessible residencies.... best of luck
  9. hey thanks so much for this! is there any way I could get the application fee waived? would be a tremendous help.
  10. oh yes i would never ever say "i'm applying just to go!" that would be rude lol. where can i access the webinar? youve been so helpful thank you so much!!
  11. what is the funding situation from each like? both great schools, though cornell is ivy. However, living in Ithaca can be rough especially during the winter and rutgers has a great proximity to new york. both great! I'd let the funding decide.
  12. i wouldn't say EE is where my hear it but i've never traveled and I admittedly wanted the easiest acceptance. oy!
  13. i'm also considering EE! (Moldova)
  14. i'm really considering applying but might go for a place that isn't very competitive. is it true that once you get one fullbright you'll never get another, it's just a one time thing? i'm getting my MFA and was thinking about going to an eastern European country (probably Moldova since someone posted on another forum that there are 0 applicants as of now) to study jewish resistance during the Holocaust and Bundism. is this stupid (am i stupid)?
  15. hey! I'm really interested in studying in Moldova! Is it okay to message you and talk about it?
  16. rejected and unsurprising but disappointed.
  17. did VCU's SSP program. they offer in sculpture and extended media and painting. I did sculpture and was able to secure a solo show at a gallery in richmond but not because of the program just of my own volition. it really helped my portfolio and i got into a good school with almost full funding.
  18. hey i have some stuff to say about this!! so i'm a white and white passing jewish trans person and i really accepted an offer at UPenn. I visited UPenn three times before doing my interview. I was interested in the school because a mentor of mine had gone there. I met two of the professors at an MFA portfolio day at Parsons (i would highly recommend invested in MFA portfolio days if you are considering applying to programs.) I felt like the professors were highly invested in curating the program and choosing students deliberately. Most of the students are POC with three or four black people in a class of 20ish (I don't think I met everyone). The staff there are pretty diverse in my opinion but I don't think I saw any black professors or adjunct professors (again, I didn't meet everyone). I was very upfront from the first time I met two professors at the MFA portfolio day that I'm trans and I talked about it in my personal statement (they don't ask for an artists statement just a personal statement). I feel like the funding I got was very generous but also reflected my economic need. They really do want to curate a diverse program and it is multidisciplinary with room to experiment and grow. The thing about those "top" schools is that they are invested in protecting their brand. they choose students who perpetuate a certain style that fit within this brand. they harp on diversity but in the end think they are exempt from any criticism. just my two cents
  19. glad to see this resolved and you feel this way. grad school isn't for everybody, and it's possible to have an exciting career without it! enjoy yourself and work hard and it will pay off.
  20. lol i'm in the same boat!!! currently m i s e r a b l e
  21. Hello!! I am a recent college grad and have been living in the city on and off for almost 5 years. I have never been a student in the city but currently work here full-time and live in Maspeth, Queens. I think 2,400 is a good amount for living. I have a room in a not so nice apartment I pay 700 a month for. If you get a cheap room like this you will be most likely to live a somewhat restricted life (for New York City) but it's possible. I would give it a go, congratulations on your acceptance!!
  22. I was accepted to UPenn and it was the only program i applied to. I really like it, the professors seem really cool and involved and they see to want to curate a great group of ppl to make work together. The facilities are small (i'm a sculptor) but i'm willing to work with it.
  23. does anyone have any advice on how to try to negotiate more funding, or how to apply to funding grants, or how to get a TAship or any other way I can pay to get this degree? I am having anxiety thinking about rent and paying for my supplies.
