That does sound awful. I feel for you though - it's hard to say no to something you've wanted for such a long time. You just gotta look out for future you! But it sounds like you know that. I'm sorry UChicago didn't give you enough aid to make it a viable option. It occurs to me now that you might be able to get them to increase your scholarship if you ask - I think I've read elsewhere that people have had success with that.

Hey guys! Just thought I'd let you know that I received a very nice email from the Office of Admissions just now saying that my application is currently in the review process and that they hope to have decisions released around the beginning of April!

Truthfully, I don’t think any MSW program, even a particularly well-regarded one, is worth going 100k into debt for (I know they call it something different but I’m trusting what I’ve read which is that it’s equivalent to an MSW). You have to think about the debt versus what you’d be making, especially starting out. I know there are loan forgiveness programs and whatnot, but I also feel like that doesn’t give you much flexibility in terms of your career. As someone who went into a lot of debt to go to a fancy private school for undergrad, I have to be especially frugal. But honestly it blows my mind when people say that they’re seriously considering taking out that much in loans. That’s like a mortgage. It’s wild.

Oh, gotcha. Yeah, I have no idea when they plan to notify us non-priority folks. It’s crazy. They can’t seriously expect people to wait until late April for a decision...

Literally no idea. I tried to make a document one day with a list of all the acceptances by program, but people aren't always specific and I just ended up thoroughly confusing myself, lol. If there's a method to their madness, I can't decipher it.

I want to figure it out too! I gotta be honest though, it really threw me for a loop when someone said they were going through this year's applicants in "batches," lol.

Ah, too late. It's really okay though. I don't think I stand a chance this year based on the stats of people who have been accepted/waitlisted, etc. But thank you for trying to warn me!

Idk how you priority folks can stand it. It's only been five weeks and I already feel like I can't take another day of this. I'm seriously considering emailing them and letting them know I have to get back to another school by April 1st and seeing what they say, but I'm scared to after what's happened to other people who've inquired about the status of their applications. Ahhh. I feel like I'm debating about whether or not to poke a sleeping bear.

When did you apply? When I called they told me it takes them 8-10 weeks to render a decision. I applied on the 15th of February, so they said I could expect to hear back by the third week of April. I know some priority applicants still have yet to hear back. I'm honestly guessing they haven't even read my application yet; if they had, I don't know why they wouldn't just get back to me soon after. Unless maybe they are waiting to send out rejections? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don't know. I should probably stop trying to make sense of their process, but I can't help myself, lol.

What didn't she like about the first year? Just wondering if it's similar to what other people have said.

Just out of curiosity, did it have your merit scholarship listed as well? Mine had a sample letter with a merit scholarship listed in addition to my actual letter, which was what tipped me off that I hadn’t received one. Still don’t know why they had to beat around the bush about it.
