Columbia Social Work Program Fall 2018
doctormelody replied to lanabeni's topic in Social Workers Forum
I just got an email from Columbia about an event (I guess I'm on their mailing list) and almost had a heart attack, lol. Anyone else I'm leaving this text here so you can see that I was about to post the exact same thing, lmao. WHY ARE THEY TORTURING US? -
That makes sense, and I know the feeling - I've been out of school for almost three years at this point, and I'm nervous about waiting another year. But it might end up being my only viable option.
-
Ugh, yeah, that would still be like 40k in loans, right? Honestly, I don't know how anyone does this. I really want to pursue this career path but the cost of getting an MSW is almost prohibitive for me.
-
No, I will be declining their offer unless, Idk, something changes? I got a very strange email from the Director of Admissions at 10:30 pm last night saying that "up to date, a Simmons merit scholarship has not been awarded to you." I don't know what that means exactly and I asked for clarification but he hasn't responded yet. Maybe they're waiting to see if a lot of people decline their offers and then they will award a second round of merit scholarships with the leftover money? I don't know, but I'm not holding out hope regardless. I also heard back from Tulane, but they only gave me 12,500 for the first year so I might have to reapply to MSW programs next year. It is what it is. Also, just called BC and they told me I would hear within two weeks as well so I think that's just the standard response they're giving everyone regardless of when you applied.
-
I mean, it would have been fine if they had just let me know when I called. I don't see what the point was in making me wait another week besides keeping my hopes up for no reason. That's interesting... Simmons gave me until April 6th when I asked, which was exactly a month from the date I sent the email. So I bet they would give you a month from today if you asked.
-
Ah, good for you. I should just chill but I am far too impatient for that... I really really doubt it will, but I also feel exceedingly bitter towards them after they made me wait a month to find out I didn't get a merit scholarship, lol. I want to believe they're just disorganized and not actively malicious, but the letter in my "financial aid package" (if it can be called that, it's all loans) was dated March 6th, which is the same day I called them essentially begging for them to just let me know one way or the other, so. I'm pretty mad, all told.
-
Gotcha, thank you! I take it you still haven't heard back?

Does anyone know if BC is open today? I just tried to call the admissions office for the school of social work but it went straight to voicemail. Edit: It's also possible they are just on lunch at the moment.

I know the feeling. I felt the same way about Simmons until I realized they didn’t offer me any merit aid. ? -

I hope so too! I technically have to respond to Tulane by April 1st so if I don't hear anything by the end of next week I might call them again. -

I feel you, I think the only reason I’m still here is because Columbia was my dream school when I was like 17, haha. I still love the campus, it’s beautiful. Idk. Maybe talking to my friend who goes to Columbia tomorrow will give me a more favorable impression. ? -

Makes sense! The Center for Multicultural Education and Programs at NYU is awesome, I went to a lot of their events while I was there as an undergrad and they were fantastic without exception. -

Oh crap, yeah, I think you did post that here, my bad. It's so hard to keep track of everything. That does make it sound really unappealing though. -

Oh that's interesting, what did they say? @Sunset95, I think this thread is definitely going to deter future applicants, lol. -

@TooExcited&Nervous would you still consider Columbia if you get in, or have you settled on another school? -

That's a good idea! I probably wouldn't attend even if by some miracle I got in, my partner really doesn't want to live in NYC and Columbia is terrifyingly expensive, but they gave me a fee waiver for the application because I attended a grad fair they hosted, so I figured why not try. -

Yeah, although I got less than optimal financial aid from Tulane and possibly nothing from Simmons so I might have to reapply to MSW programs again next year. I wish I had applied to more this year, but there's not much I can do about it now since financial aid (or lack thereof) is such a big issue for me. Thanks for the words of encouragement, though. -

Tulane, Simmons, BU, BC, and Columbia. I got into Tulane and Simmons, but I got rejected from BU earlier this month so that's why (in addition to my lack of experience) I'm not super hopeful about BC or Columbia. -

Aw, I think that’s a lost cause, but thank you. I’m still rooting for you as well! -

Yeah, that’s awesome! Really happy for you either way. ? -
Honestly, I wish I could be more help, but I think you won’t know until you try? I know there are MSW programs that will accept students with a GPA lower than 3.0 if you take the GRE, which you have done, but I don’t know if NYU is one of them. I wish I could be of more assistance, but my situation is kind of the opposite (decent GPA, not much experience).
