doctormelody reacted to miler95 in Fall 2019 Applications
Most of the schools I applied to said they won't be releasing any admissions info until March - that might be why the board seems a little slower at this time of the year. I wish more places did rolling admissions, but I'm sure there are pros and cons of both. It just sucks waiting so long to know how you are going to move on with your life!

Thank you! That’s what I’m leaning toward. I really appreciate everyone’s replies!

I think you should go for it. However, I agree on it being a decision you just have to make yourself. Talk to your partner about it and think of you. Congratulations on your admission!

I second this. I'll add that perhaps you and your partner can sit down and weigh the pros and cons of both options and come to a decision with the greatest benefit.

Hi all! I figured I'd join in on this thread- I've applied to U of M (Dec 1st deadline) and Wayne State University for the advanced standing programs. I'm very anxiously waiting to hear back from UofM and just waiting for my school to send my official transcripts to Wayne State. Good luck to everyone!

doctormelody reacted to bloome in How do you deal with the fear about debt?
I am very much in the same boat! I am so stressed about the amount of loans I'm going to have to potentially take out. My boyfriend is currently in medical school and will end up with about $200,000 in debt and so I want to add as little to that as I can. I want to go to Case Western so badly but its so incredibly expensive it's really worrying.

doctormelody reacted to harpert1 in How do you deal with the fear about debt?
@doctormelody Lots of different reasons. For example, some people were unaware that they had to make monthly payments for 10 years in addition to working a public service job for 10 years. Some people did not stay on top of their creditors for reporting their payments made each month (and if you miss one payment, then you immediately cannot qualify). Some people thought they were in public service jobs but really their jobs did not meet the criteria. All in all, this was a new program that was rolled out in a terrible way; transparency and clarity will more than likely be more upfront in the future.
@bloome My partner is in law school and she has taken on a considerable amount of debt that I'm not happy about (lol) around $150,000 so I totally understand this predicament well. I am usually a realist, but I am incredibly optimistic for everyone on this forum, for some reason, to get into great schools with great scholarships!

Me: *jots down ideas for hobbies to start in the new year/during grad school because I currently have none besides watching TV and wasting copious amounts of time on the Internet*

Woohoo!! Congrats on turning them in!! I submitted the last of my applications yesterday and it feels like a huge weight has been lifted! If it’s not too much extra work (and too much extra cost) to work on Simmons, might as well push yourself to do one last one. But totally up to you if it’s worth your time or energy!

Hi all! I started another thread about UMich in particular, but wanted to share the other schools I’m applying to as well so we can cheer each other on! I’m waiting to hear back from Hunter, Pittsburgh, SUNY Albany, and Boston University. Looking forward to hearing from others who applied to these schools too!

CMU has a pretty all-encompassing list that includes JL Land and Sterling as two top companies! My friends in Pittsburgh use Walnut Creek and love them, as well.
Shadyside and Squirrel Hill are quiet with minimal undergrads, and have plenty of dog-friendly housing! That's where I'm looking at right now, due to my dog probably coming with me as well! From when I lived in Pittsburgh for undergrad, Shadyside was always the place that my friends in graduate programs lived.

Hey, people from elsewhere, how long did it take you to adjust to the city/PA in general? I moved here in August from VA and I am so homesick, lol. I miss the pretty scenery, milder weather, and my family. I just applied to Pitt for Social Work (which was the whole reason that we moved) and I'm kind of terrified of the idea of 2 and 1/2 more years here. Pittsburgh's not so bad really aside from the cold but I absolutely hate PA and I'm finding it really hard to adjust, culturally. Any advice, or just words of wisdom? I'm really sad right now.

Yeah its so tough cuz it sounds like I did get a decent amount, tuition is just so high! sure! I graduated from Kent State with a double major in Biology and Medical Sociology. Gpa of 3.3, Soc major gpa of 4.0. I have three years of research in end of life/palliative care. I got a paid fellowship over the summer of 2018 to work with a professor on her prognosis awareness project. I presented my work at both NEOUSS at Oberlin and KSU's symposium. I also completed an internship within pediatric palliative care at the local children's hospital and continue to volunteer with their program to teach coping skills to children who have lost a parent/sibling/loved one. I know both my research professor and mentor from my internship most likely wrote me stellar recommendation letters. While my gpa is nothing amazing I know I've had lots of unique research/internship opportunities. I've also been working as a pharmacy technician for 3 years and I'm registered with the state board so that has also given me great experience in the medical field. I applied for the Health track at Case since I really wanna be hospital social worker.

Thank you! It's actually pretty annoying not knowing actual admission statistics for grad school programs

I was offered $29,000 and $4,000 field scholarship. I'm still so torn since this is my dream school but I would still have to cover a ton out of pocket. I also saw someone post below that 1/15 was a mistake so I am definitely going to contact them and ask because that will make my life much much easier!!!!

I think your chances are very good! Write a decent personal statement and you should be set. I don't know the admissions statistics for all of those schools but you are a strong candidate imho and I'd be gobsmacked if you didn't receive admission offers from at least a few of the schools you mentioned above.

doctormelody got a reaction from JonoDuncan in Columbia University MSW Fall 2019
I think @JonoDuncan may be referring to the ones listed here under competitive scholarships:
https://socialwork.columbia.edu/the-student-experience/costs-financial-aid/
They also emailed us in mid-January about something called the Honjo Scholarship, more info about which can be found here:
https://sipa.columbia.edu/faculty-research/libraries-resources/japanese-american-association-new-york-honjo-scholarship
Peterson's appears to have changed their website and now I can't find the acceptance rate for Columbia on there, but last year, I think it was listed as being around 52%, and I'd believe that. It's definitely infinitely less selective than their undergraduate schools, but 70% does seem high.
Anecdotally, on the thread from last year Advanced Standing applicants seemed to have a harder time than traditional two-year applicants, and many people with high GPA's were rejected. Also, a lot of people were treated like garbage by the school. I'd highly recommend reading through that thread if you have time - it's extremely long, but will probably provide valuable info.
I really hope this was helpful.
